Take the Class, but be Warned...

It's kind of hard to review this class because I really liked it but at the same time, it annoyed me sometimes. Actually, the only annoying thing was that for each project, (there were 6) you had to make trips all over the place to buy supplies which was very time consuming and expensive. especially when you don't have a car like I don't. The thing I hated the most was how we had to take slides to document each of our projects. Luckily they sell slide film in the bookstore but you have to travel somewhere to get them developed. Slide film is around $8 and getting them developed is around $10. So you'll spend about $60 for the semester just on slides. Then you can also expect to spend between $10-$30 on each of the 6 projects. But if you do the work and present your work well you'll do fine.

Demanding and enjoyable

Andonian is an excellent teacher, she's demanding but also understanding. The homework prepares you to do better on your projects and enables you to get feedback to help with your design ideas. I happy that she was demanding on our projects because this will help us to create a better portfolio and prepare us for the world of work.

If you can find someone else to take this class with then do it..

Nothing personal about Lynn Andonian, but her DAI 300 class is pretty bad. She is irrationally harsh in her critiques, and doesn't have much experience in contemporary graphics.

Work hard and you'll love her.

Lynne is very inspiring. She does ask alot of her students but she is very fair in grading and the projects are fun. She teaches how she works, focusing on environmental and social awareness issues. She deligates the class fairly and diversifies the strenths and weaknesses of team member so that each team suceeds and learns from the projects. I cannot say more good things about her.

Are you busy?

You will be very overwhelmed taking her class. She gives six projects throughout the semester and about 2 weeks of time to complete each of them. During the first 2 weeks of the semester, I felt that she was asking for too much. I'll give you an example: our very first project was to research a designer, present the information to the class with powerpoint, design a sticker using the designer's philosophy and write a 2 page rationale...all these due in 2 weeks time! I've spend a lot of money in this class, because she wants perfection. Though she doesn't say it directly, she doesn't want your printed projects to be pixelated so you'll have to print it in Kinkos or Rapid Copy in the library. There's a lot of errands you'll have to make for this class. She wants you to document your projects by taking slides of your final projects, thus you'll be spending money developing slides and spending time taking them! And one very important thing: you will be required to give a PRESENTATION for every project that you do. So everyone in the class will be giving six presentations throughout the semester explaining your projects and its process, etc. It's just too much work within too little time - you will be stressed out wasting money, time and energy in this class. I also feel that she doesn't "teach" at all. Most of the time during the semester, she's giving out projects and grading them by the criteria but she doesn't teach you how to do the projects. (because it's up to you, right?) Whenever I asked for suggestions, she always says 'I don't know'. Oh by the way, she doesn't grade according to how much effort you put into your work, she looks at perfection. If you spend $50 on material, and it looks professional, she'll probably give you a higher grade because it looks perfect. I did a project that looks pretty crappy but I spend a lot of time on it (other than doing my other hw), but I got a C from her. Well, if you feel you've been NOT very busy at state, try taking her class then. But if you don't want to stress yourself out...avoid her at all cost! And she's not good at explaining herself...that really irritates me.
