I liked Ann Auleb because she was very good at teaching the material. She reviewed all of the difficult information with us until it was drilled into our heads. Class was very worthwhile to attend because she made the material in the reader much clearer and it aided memorization. Some of it was boring though and repetitive and I wished attendance did not factor into the grade. I never used the lecture guide because the information was available in the reader. But to each his own learning style.
Ann seems to really care about students and want them to learn to make smart decisions about AIDS for themselves. I was surprised to find her somewhat unapproachable when I met her at the AIDS conference. However. I am not much for one on one meetings with teachers anyway.
You do have to work to keep up in this class. Read the reader and really absorb the material - do not skim. Attend lecture and keep up with the quizzes and you can ace this class. There is one 10 page paper that is really not too daunting as it is the kind that you wrote in high school where you talk about yourself in the personal voice. It's a little weird to get used to the idea but the grading was not hard on that. Online quizzes are awesome. I always study better and feel more relaxed taking tests at home and at my own pace.

Ann is a very good professor. The book you get for her class has the lecture outline already in there. She gives out 4 quizzes that you complete on blackboard. The quizzes you take until you get all the answers right. Here mid term is very hard, but the final was a breese. You have to write a 10 page paper which is pretty easy. Just be patient is you take her class. The mid term can seem like a downer., but you will more than make up for it on the final!!

At first this class was really interesting. Then after a while, the lectures started to drag oonnn. Ann is funny, but its just on the surface. She was previously a nurse, and if you talk to her one on one, she has that bitchy school nurse attitude. There really is no HW except for one group latex project which is kinda fun, and the ten page essay which is on your own opinions so it is not that hard to write. Everything is turned in online so make sure not to plagiarize. There are 4 quizzes which you can take as many times as you want, one midterm which you do at home, so its not that hard, and then a really long final which is worth 50% of your grade, but its pretty straight forward. She curves the grades the end, so dont worry too much. Also you only need to buy her reader to get through the class, the other books are just a waste of money.

Professor Auleb, is the BEST. This woman knows her stuff. If you want someone who knows their information and is a delight to hear in lecture, take her class. You won't be disappointed and she handles a large class well. I would say that she's too soft on students that talk in lecture and her discipline is like a grandmother scolding a child - it's not vicious, but gentle threats of throwing the students out of the class (she never does). If you like to cheat on projects DON'T because she will find out and take it up with the dean and you can get expel. I worked hard and got a B that was next to impossible to get. However, if you want to learn some important information about sexuality with a great lecturer - take her, I recommend it! The work is hard but not impossible because it's multiple choice with more than one answer. Take her class you will not be disappointed!

I took this class at 9 am in McKenna (the large theater), so because the class was 200+ students and attendance wasn't taken, and so early in the morning, I barely went. The lectures were pretty interesting but the reading was VERY dull, even though it's about sex.
The class consists of 2 take home exams, 1 cumulative final, and 1 project. The take home exams are multiple choice, except in order to get the answer right you have to choose EVERY correct answer, not just one. We worked on these tests in groups of 4 or 5 and still got C's and D's - the take home tests are REALLY hard.
The final is just a normal multiple choice, and the latex project is pretty easy, and can be fun if you put a lot of effort into it.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone, because the tests are almost impossible to do well on. Plus, Ann can be kind of mean.

I went in thinking that this class would be a breeze. I got a nasty surprise with the take home midterms. The questions were very tricky, and to make matters worse, some of the answers weren't even in the book. I literally spent about three days for each midterm trying to find the answers. I even compared answers with people that went to class every day and we still couldn't get the answers. Trying to do the exams the night before is definitely not an option. I don't want to be mean because I'm sure that Ann knows her material well, but I felt that the book was redundant and poorly organized. A lot of the information in the book was slapped together in a confusing manner. If you take her and are searching for an answer, you'll understand what I mean. For the most part her lectures were OK, but at times were all jumbled together. They basically consisted of watching boring videos. This class will take up more time than you think, so don't think you can get away with not spending time on it.

Interesting films and some interesting lectures, but her textbooks are a total nightmare... They are sort of like the "Winchester Mystery Houses" of textbooks, and ramble on and on with the topics appearing in no particular order. Her textbooks are a compilation of pieces and parts, apparently written by an assortment of people, then appended together, obviously without the editing they need.
The tests in this class were very haphazardly written and graded. The answer keys to both the 1st and 2nd exams were incorrect and had to be manually corrected. For your own protection, when you do the takehome tests, write down on the test questions paper the page number where you found the answer. That way, when you check the answer key and find something screwy, you can easily locate the conflict between what the answer key says and what your textbooks say so that you can get Ms. Ann to correct your score. (Consider yourself warned!) Personally, I don't understand why this happened since the class is given every semester to hundreds of students. Seems to me that it would have been easier to proofread the tests and the answer keys rather than manually change the scores for 800+ people.
Although her synopsis says that you can get extra points from participating in research surveys/projects, don't count on Ms. Ann announcing any opportunities in her class, even though there might be ongoing research projects. In my PSYCH320 class which was immediately preceding Ms. Ann's class, there were at least 6 opportunities to participate in research projects, yet Ms. Ann did not announce even one.
Overall, I was disappointed with the way she conducted this class, although some of the films were certainly interesting and informative. I also did not like the haphazard way that grades and SSNs were displayed on the window to the Biology Bldg. (There was very little concern for safeguarding people's SSNs. The middle two digits of the SSN were blacked out, but you could still see them because of the way the light passed through the glass and the paper.) The best thing that I can say about her class is that it meets the upper division life science requirement, and that you will see films there that you would never see anywhere else.

Professor Auleb is a pretty good teacher. She explains the concepts of the material well. She is structured, and the way she teaches in the class is by going through the textbook and has plenty of examples that make it clear for students to follow. Tests weren't too bad, and she was there during office hours when students needed assistance.

Auleb is one of my favorite teachers at SFSU. I have also had her for BIO 330 and had a great time in that class, after a particular incident I found out how wonderful and open minded she is. The lecture guide is fantastic, especially if you have an attendance problem.
I am completely taken aback be some students claim that she presents questionable material. She cares so much about presenting accurate material, and is very very slow to accept new studies unless they have extrememly strong evidence. There are some things she has low tolerance for, and that is rude, or close minded students, though she tries to give space to both.
If you are taking her class try to get a chance to talk to her outside of class, she is an amazing women who really cares about her students, and is on the cutting edge in the feild of human sexuality.

IF I WERE TO SAY THAT SHE WAS GREAT LIKE MOST THE PEOPLE HEAR, I WOULD BE JUMPIN ON THIS LIL BAND WAGON THAT IS GOING ON HERE. OK OK, IF YOU DO THE WORK, YOU WILL BE REWARDED, THAT MUCH IS TRUE. BUT THERE IS A LOT OF WORK HERE, SO MUCH THAT MAYBE THIS SHOULD BE CALLED BIO 440. THE MATERIAL IN THE COURSE WAS REALLY... INSIGHTFUL. FOR THE MOST PART, I ENJOYED COMING TO CLASS BECAUSE I MADE THE MOST OUT OF IT AND WITH HER TEACHING IT, THAT'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO. I FELT SHE WAS RUDE TO A LOT OF STUDENTS THAT JOINED CLASS DISCUSSION WHEN SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WAY MORE OPEN AND NICE ABOUT THINGS, I MEAN THIS IS A SEX CLASS SO LIGHTEN UP A LITTLE. SHE IS WAY TO ANAL ABOUT THE WAY SHE GRADES AND MAKES TESTS. YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS BUT BRING SOME FRIENDS TO MAKE IT WORTH WHILE AND TO HELP YOU DO WELL. THIS CLASS ISN'T A JOKE LIKE PEOPLE SAY IT IS. P.S. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT TO ENSURE A GOOD GRADE, YOU WILL NEED THE POINTS BADLY

*Ann is a very fun and outgoing teacher with an awesome personality. *Her way of speaking helps us understand her lectures better. *She is very organized because she uses the mighty power point to guide her lectures. (thank GOD) *She has us view some very "educational" films that are helpful at some points. *She also has us view some helpful slides showing affects of certain diseases on someone and other things. *She bases everything on the Lecture Guide, which she wrote herself. *She allows us to use notes on the exams (very helpful so take advantage) *She assigns four exams: 2 in-class exams, 1 take home exam, and one make-up exam. *She also assigns a 10 page term paper(easy) and a latex project (easy) *Allows us to get extra credit by attending educational workshops that are only an hour long. (it's also good to attend one for yourself)
Ann is a great teacher, good personality, and funny! I've learned so much from her!

Ann, a funny, knowledgeable, and fair instructor, made this class fun. I feel that I learned valuable information in her class. Although the textbook that she wrote and uses is somewhat disorganized, it is full of interesting information. With the exception of a few films shown in class that you will need to take notes on to prepare for the tests, the book can make up for missed classes. She is one of my favorite teachers so far. The in-class tests are fair and consistent. The take-home, group test is much more difficult, but with the book as a reference and your classmates to collaborate with, it wasn't too difficult. The final is not comprehensive, but an optional, comprehensive, make-up exam, taken during finals, can replace the lowest test score if the score you receive is higher than the lowest test score. Although this optional test can help you, it cannot harm you. Finally, she offers extra credit for attending certain workshops. This can really help if you need a few more points.

Great teacher!!! What an entertaining lady! Great class to take. All the tests are take home, with multiple choice and essay questions. The essays are actually easier than the mulitplie choice questions because there may be more than one answer- so you must know the material- I suggest study groups. Auleb offers tons of extra credit- so it's very easy to get a good grade in the class. There is one project- the latex project- this is very easy and fun, very easy to get full credit on this. I recommend you take this class if you want a fun class to go thats not hard at all.

Her final is 200 points which is the same amount as all of her exams combined so that is not to good. Her exams are 50 mulitple choice, but all the answers are correct you have to choose the best one. She will discuss some issues that are nasty and that you don't need to know i.e. her sex life. But, overall the class topics were interesting. Don't sit in the front she will pick on you.

Basically, if you didn't agree with her viewpoints on the subjuct matter, you were wrong. If you have some sort of a pulse, and have a strong opinion, or any opinion for that matter, you'll stick out. Ann's class was simply based on her biased opinions. She talked about extreme case studies as if they were the norm. She did not let you have your own opinions on matters on the test questions either. Her test questions had no substance in my opinion, for they were not helpful in terms of learning- take home tests were more like "busy work." Although she does know the material quite well, she is lacking something called people skills. Very "monotone" as well. Her staff was not that friendly during office hours either.

Tests were pretty easy; they were all scantron tests (50 multiple choice questions) and everyone was allowed to bring an 8x10 sheet of handwritten notes. Of course, we had to do the infamous latex project (with a 10-page term paper to go along with it) but it wasn't that hard.

Class Consists of: 1)Lectures, Videos, and Guest speakers. 2)3exams, 1 final, 1 make-up exam, 1 exam w/ the lowest grade is dropped. (all multiple choice) 3)1 group project using latex 4)1 term paper writing about the project. 5)She will not take roll or have a sign in sheet.
Other: 1)Some question from the exam will be from videos shown in class and the guest speakers. 2)there may be a essay exam for the night classes. 3)People say that night class may be easier.
Tests are not easy, but if you do descent work in her class you will most likely pass the course.

Prof. Auleb was a fine teacher. The material was interesting -- how could it not be? -- and she is clearly knowledgeable about the subject matter and seems to enjoy teaching the class.
I did feel her agenda was a bit too strong some of the time. On one occasion I disagreed with her about the point she was trying to make about a movie she had shown the class, a movie which I knew fairly well, and she didn't seem at all interested in considering my point of view.
The exams were relatively easy, assuming one had read the material and paid attention in class. (And it's pretty hard not to pay attention in class.)
We were assigned a group project to work on in groups of four or so, and I didn't enjoy that very much. I didn't feel it was intellectually challenging, and anyway I prefer to work independently. Working in groups was logistically challenging and not appealing to me. I felt our time could have been better spent on a more sophisticated assignment, and with the option of working independently.

Ann Auleb's Biol 330 class is easy as long as you are a good reader and good at memorizing facts. Studying the reader's sample exam questions helps a lot especially quite a few of the makeup exam questions are from there and it will gives you an idea of how the exams are going to be like. Most of the time I just came to class and listen because she said we do not need to take any notes since everything is in the lecture guide (you have to always buy a new one, no used ones), but some exam questions are on the videos we watched in class. The class consists of 2 exams, 1 makeup, and a final that is like on the last day of instruction so be prepared to take it early! There is also a Latex Project and a 10 paper on the project like the progress et cetra. I learned a lot of stuff from this class, stuff that my parents should have teach me or school.

However, it is good to go to class on the days of the guest speakers and the video showings.

Dr. Auleb is a cool instructor. At a first glance, you would never expect this "funny, little old lady" to talk so comfortably about dildos and what you're supposed to do with them....
In any case, I took this class for a Segment III requirement. If you do your reading, it is an easy class. There are no midterms. There are weekly quizzes to keep you up to par. Like her lectures, the quizzes come straight out of the reader (purchased at the beginning of semester). Since the lectures come straight out of the reader, they can sometimes be boring. Students might opt to miss lectures because they can just study from the reader. Be careful though, if you miss class, you might miss out on major extra credit. Auleb practically HANDS OUT grades of 'A' from all the extra credit she offers. Show up, do your reading, and you'll do fine. Auleb is a very generous and flexible grader.

Human Sexuality is understandably one of the more popular classes @ State. Who wouldn't want to learn more about Human Sexuality and earn 3 units at the same time? I sure could use the sex education in this crazy day and age as well as 3 units toward my GE, so I took the class. I must say I was not disappointed. Sure I thought some of the information and material are dirty, but that's the idea. The class not only taught me about human sexuality, but also taught me how to think critically about the subject, i.e., sex may not be dirty, etc.
Ms. Auleb has a great handle on the subject, and a good sense of humor which adds entertainment to the class. Thus if you decide to take the class, which I highly recommend, you should try not to miss class as you will miss a fun lecture as well as crucial information about how to protect yourself from STDs that can save your life. Moreover, if you attend all the lectures, you should be able to do fairly well since all lectures come straight off the reading/lecture guide.
There are 2 midterms, a final, and a make-up to replace either the 1st or 2nd midterm. There is a term paper in which you write about you and your sexual preferences; and a fun, little "latex" project (you'll see if you decide to take the class). Oh yea, you can also earn extra credit points for attending a health workshop. Pretty neat, huh?!
Bottomline: if you can take a this class to fulfill a GE requirement, take "Human Sexuality" with Ann Auleb. Go to class, have fun, study and get yourself an easy A. You deserve it!

Unfortunately, I never had the chance to speak to Prof. Auleb one on one, because our class was so huge. The subject is very interesting (though very graphic), but for most people, this was the perfect class to sleep. It would not be deterimental if you miss a few classes, because everything is on the lecture guide. What's vital is that you keep up with the reading. Otherwise you'll be in big trouble. It is also important that you show up for class during the days she shows videos, because she includes specific questions in the exams related to video. This class is quite easy so long as you take the time to read the lecture guide and study the sample multiple choice questions (in the back of the reader). Going to class is not a must.

Professor Auleb is a nice woman, knowledgable, and fair but tremendously wasteful of time. The 3 hour class could have been tught in 45 mnutes of lecture and slides. Sometimes 20 minutes would be spent looking at adds that are supposed to be related to sexuality when 4 or 5 make a point. I am a conscienscious student but I read a novel in almost every class and still followed all lecture, key points, and aced the tests. Her arguements are very simplistic and well meant but lacking in evidence. You will see more random slides and old videos than you can imagine. She is a decent teacher who has fallen into a rut of repetition, randomness and irrelevance unfortunately. If you like to think dont take this class. Ann Auleb is an excellent teacher. This class provided a lot of useful and interesting information that I don't think I could have gotten from any other class. There is a lot of information to cover, but if you keep up with the assigned readings and attend class on a regular basis, you will succeed in this class. She encourages questions a is very open-minded and down to earth which creates a comfortable atmoshpere to learn in. The exams are very basic. There are four exams, one after each section. There are 3 multple choice exams and one essay exam. The material on the exams is straight out of the text book and lectures. so you don't get any surprises. I would recommend Auleb to anyone interested in learning about Human Sexuality.

Bio 330 was one of the easiest classes that I have ever taken. As long as you read the material, you should do really well on the exams. Most of the material is very basic; things that you should already know. You don't even have to go to the lectures because most of the materials are basically in the reader. But if you do go to class, you'll probably enjoy it because she's very fun. She loves talking about sex, and she tells a lot of jokes to keep the class interested. She's very enthusiastic, and she's very nice when you approach her about something. You will have to get a reader and a study guide. She gives three tests, one paper, and a team project. You will have to make something creative out of condoms for the team project. Like I mentioned earlier, as long as you read the course reader, and go over the study guide, you will do fine. Her exams are very easy multiply choice questions.

Taking Human Sexuality with Ann Auleb is like sitting at the kitchen table with your crusty, loveable, hyperintelligent great-aunt Belva, chatting about sex. It's just plain fun. And you will learn something-- I'm a 36 YO queer leather freak, and I've damn near seen it all. Ann goes through lots of anatomy, endocrinology and biology as well as the basics of Sex 101 and beyond. She's well organized and her reader outlines her lectures to the letter. Plus, she makes an attempt to make you feel comfortable with the lectures and discussions, whether you're extremely conservative or, well, a 36-year old queer leather freak.

Biology 330, human sexuality, is a course that should exist as one of the most interesting classes. The teaching style that Auleb uses does not make sexuality any more interesting than if it is learned from bars and back alleys. This instructor seems to think that many students know very little to nothing about human sexuality. Although some interesting facts are presented, the bulk of the course concentrates on basic sex ed topics. The set up of the lectures and course is extremely unorganized and the reading assignments are not sequenced very well. For anyone who has lived in san francisco for a while, this course will be no new information. For a class this undazzling, studying sounds as appealing as watching the grass grow.

Mrs. Auleb was totally fun in class. She made learning about sex even more interesting than it already is, if that is ever possible. Her lecture guide makes the class even more convenient for those of us who hate taking notes, especially in a theater like McKenna (no leg room!). Besides showing us very interesting movies, she brings in a variety of visual aids. I don't think I need to say more. Everyone already takes this class -- it's one of the most popular, if not the most popular, class at school.

This professor gave the class tons of useful information. She was always enthusiastic about the material and truly wanted everyone to learn and benefit from the material. She has a comfortable abd relaxed attitude and is very approachable. I enjoyed her methods to teaching. On the tests, there were no surprises. All the information was straight from the reader. One of the most fun classes I've had at State.
