Dr P Barnes is the way to go in Physiology!

I'm confused why the three people prior to me gave Dr Barnes a bad review. I personally found him to be a great professor. He is ALWAYS available for you to go and see. He is ALWAYS willing to help you, talk to you and he makes you think. His tests are easy and NOT tricky despite what someone before me said. Everything comes right out of his lectures and the book. I HIGHLY recommend doing the end of the chapter reviews and know those questions. If you tape his lectures, read the chapters in the book and re write your notes...than there will be NO PROBLEM with you getting an A or a B in the class. He is FAIR. His handwriting isn't the best, but if you ask him what something says, he will tell you. I personally think he is an awesome teacher and very personable. Which makes class fun as this is a very tough class alone.

Not recomended

This was one of the most confusing classes I had ever taken. It is a shame because it should have been one of the most interesting classes and Dr Barnes is very charismatic which can make a classroom atmosphere rather amusing. But when it comes to his teaching, the cracks are numerous. Unfortunately Dr Barnes is probably unaware of his weaknesses. Or maybe he just thinks too highly of himself (like often mentioning that he was a dean, from the old school, works at NASA etc...). There is a lot of misunderstanding around the projects and the lectures he gives. It is a shame in a way because he truly is a very charismatic and interesting men. In addition he is very picky and sometimes insensitive which is (I'm sure) unintentional, but it can feel quite sharp. He will grade your spelling mistakes as well as the table shapes and so on, but the worst thing is that his grading is extremely inconsistent.

Not a very good teacher

Dr. Barnes is a very smart man but he does not have seem to want to help the students. He encourages students to withdraw from the class. His handwriting is very bad and he goes pritty quickly through his lectures. It helps to record the lectures but it takes a long time to listen to a tape

He needs to be more organized when writing information on the board and talk a little slower and more clear. He should not be teaching anymore

Needs to retire

Dr. Barnes is a very knowledgeable, nice and charming man. He has made himself very available during his office hours for my questions and doesn't rush me through explaining a concept. My problem is his lecturing and his exams. During his lectures he is sporadic/ non linear with his teaching so understanding the basis of Physiology you'll have to get on your own. He skims through topics assuming we know the information already. His writing is horrible and often mispells or absentmindedly writes the wrong things on the chalk board so you must be adept at figuring out his intention. His exams are mainly on his lectures/lecture material. His exams are much more difficult than his lecture material and he also asks the questions inappropiately: tests what we don't know and makes the questions very confusing like offers the answers as A & B are true, B & C are true, 3 of the above are true, none of the above are true. I remain confused as to how to get some information that is not covered in the text that he covers on his exams. He is very knowledgeable on Physiology but needs to retire and give up this class to someone that is more energetic and passionate about really teaching students Physiology. I am a Kinesiology major and have never received a lower grade than a A in my science classes.
