One of the best professors I've had in terms of helping me understand what it really means to be a counselor. I've learned more about myself in her classes than in any other course at State. Her assignments are thoughtful and, for students who are willing to challenge themselves, very intense. I suggest you take this course with Dr. Bavis. You won't regret it.

This class is way hands on. You meet with a small group of 5-6 members weekly taking turns being the leader so that you can see what that is like. That in itself is so great, because you really get to know some of your classmates better. Her papers are super easy, but you learn a lot about yourself writing them. The class wasn't too structured, I think it was her first time doing Group, it will get better. You do this in class presentations on what different theories look like in a group setting in class, those are really helpful! You don't need to do the reading, but it's interesting I'm sure.

I really liked Bavis. She is very new agey but I was okay with that. I felt I learned a lot of skills that would help me as I embarked on the MS Counseling program. She is very feeling oriented, and as long as you can protray that in your papers, you earn an "A." She usually says that in the first class, you start with an "A" and you choose if you want to go down from there. So turn in all your work! It's easy and it's fun and you'll learn a lot from processing your feelings.

Nancy Bavis is an okay instructor. I really like her laid back style and her attitude towards counseling but I'm not particularly challenged by her. I find her class very easy and easygoing actually.
The whole group (class) needs to become better. There's no dialogue in our whole group class. The small group experience is great. I've enjoyed my group alot but there's very little that we do to use the techniques we hear about in class.
