Intelligent professor

Yes as a student I'll say that he is an intelligent professor, often times I find that in some classes i'll be able to bring more into the class than the teacher himself knows. (from experiences, past classes and material learned, and from reading books articles etc) But this guy really knows marketing. The projects are a bit random, you can get a good project or end up with a disaster which is not controllable as that is worked out between the group and the client with Bhat only standing as a middle man.

The Socratic style of lecturing is definitely a plus, it helps make those who dont normally speak in class decide on speaking, you may find yourself speaking as well. Since all the topics are relevant and interesting why wouldnt you? Cars, Soda, Cell phones. The goodies. Most of the time he'll spend a good portion of the class discussing the wallstreet journal, (something you must subscribe to, but at $20 you can get enough to cover the 15 week period.

Dont take offense though when he shoots down your opinion, as he's got a very direct nature of conversing. One fun MBA teacher.

mixed review

Prof Bhat is very current and determined to show the best in himself and push the students. But, one of his regular class methods is to talk down in a mocking fashion to some students almost like he is putting them down personally and belittling their efforts or comments. I did not find this a particularly constructive or educational approach in the classroom, save it for the boardroom :). If you can deflect, ignore or rise above personal attacks from the professor, take the class - he's great!

Spearhead of the SFSU marketing dept.

Prof. Bhat class was one of the best I've ever had. He has great knowledge of his subject and more importantly passion. It shows that he really likes marketing.

Sometimes he can be percieved as a bit full of himself. The thing with this is that he's a lot of published articles and it is these he is referring to. For my part I like that as he's sharing his knowledge with his students, knowledge not found in books.

Also worth mentioning were the unbelievable great guest speakers that Prof. Bhat provided for class.

Summation: If you're into marketing then this class is a complete must. Great teacher with good lectures and you won't be disapointed.

Excellent for Brand Management

I really like Prof. Bhat and his teaching style. I had him for both 860 and 865. This review is about MKTG 865 - Strategic Brand Management.

Basically, "Branding" is his area of expertise, and he is very energized on the subject. There are lots of excellent discussions and guest speakers from industry coming in to talk. There were 2 fun projects to work on - one that required conducting primary research. However, he was looking to have fun with it all, and that's just what we had. In addition, 30% of your grade was on class participation.

As an elective, I would highly recommend this if you have even a remote interest in branding.

Good man

You will learn a great deal of knowledge from this man. His opinions are direct and insightful. As a result, you must be ready to write, write, and write. Just in-class notes my friends.

Enjoy and learn.

Knowledgable professor!

Good teacher for MKTG 431. He seems to know his stuff and makes it quite pertinent to everyday life as well. His exams are fair...you DO need to study. You need to attend class regularly as well because much of the exams are regarding lectures. Take Prof. Bhat if you do want to learn marketing well...he gives you a good start in this intro. class.

I think that, even though the class is interesting, he is not the best instructor for the subject. A main part of the class consists in reading the Wall Street Journal but he only discusses the articles that he considers are important leaving the students with little or no choice. His lectures are boring and he makes no effort to make them interesting. I would not recommend Bhat for MKTG 860. I am sure his Brand Managament class is more interesting since he claims to be an expert on the issue. Overall I give this instructor a C because of his lack of interest and motivation to teach Strategic Marketing.

One thing that prompted me to write in this review - the moron who gave Prof. Bhat an F. Just disregard that. I dont know what this student has against Prof. Bhat but I dont think it has anything to do with the classroom! Bhat is a thorough professional. He is very knowledgeable, current, and illustrated his lectures with examples from the real world (the Wall Street Journal seems to be one of his favorites! And what makes it even better is that he is delightfully funny. He has one exam that is tough by most standards but he is certainly fair. I have only one suggestion though: although Markstrat was a great game and I learned from it, students should not have to spend so much time mastering the technicals of file transfers!

Professor Bhat is one of the most thoughtful professors I have encountered in the MBA program. He is very knowledgeable and current in the strategy area and communicates his knowledge to students through well-organized points and solid examples. His tests are very fair although somewhat long (3 hours of essay writing! but he takes pains to tell us exactly what he is looking for and even discusses ideal answers afterwards! Perhaps he should not emphasize the Markstrat simulation so much - I would prefer it to be a smaller part of the grade. But that is only a minor matter. He has much to offer students and I rate is one of the best classes I took at SFSU.

Prof. Bhat is overall an excellent professor. He is in touch with current marketing topics, communicates well and genuinely knows his subject--I learned a lot from him. However, he emphasizes participation too much. Although I enjoy participating myself, the fact that he forces EVERYONE to speak makes some classes laborious. People feel compelled to speak even when they don't have anything intelligent to say--in order to get a good grade. This wastes valuable class time, while not conveying any useful knowledge. He is definitely arrogant, but at least backs it up by being knowledgeable. Lastly, it annoys me that he often talks disparagingly about the lack of commitment of SFSU faculty and students. Complaining is childish--go out and do something about it, or stay silent! Plus this can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy...But still, one of the best Profs I've had here.

One of the evaluation is one exam. When he give you the grade, he does not explain you what he was looking for a good answer or where your answer was wrong. Second, the participation. The participation is the terrible part. Your participation must be brillant, because if it is normal, he give you a dity look and sustract point from your participation grade. If you are an international student, froget about. He is going to make your life miserable. You should know every single US company history. If you participate. And finally, the markstrat software. It is the best part. You learn a lot by yourself, with his help.

Awesome teacher. Just be prepared or he'll pick you apart. If you like challenge, and prefer a lecture that'll bring your attention instead of put you to sleep, Bhat is the one.

However, if you're very shy and don't like to participate, avoid him. But hey, this is marketing. How can you do any marketing if you're "too shy to speak".

This guy is the best. I am surprised they are able to keep him at SFSU! He gives students a very broad perspective of marketing and how it fits into business. He is very very current and in tune with the business world. He teaches marketing concepts as building blocks and then illustrates how these concepts are used through Wall Street Journal articles. He has essay exams that test the concepts and makes us do marketing plans from real-life clients. All in all, a great course and a great teacher.

Professor Bhat is a medicore professor. I have learned nothing in his class. The few areas he has attempted to teach us I have learned in other required courses.

In addition, he likes to hear himself talk. He is egotistical and thinks he is the best teacher in the business department. Therefore, he puts down other professors for not doing their job rather than see how he is failing at his own job.

He treats graduate students as if they were freshman and therefore teaches from that perspective which is one reason that I have learned nothing from him.
