not good

Mr. Calderon is not a good teacher. He is arrogant and does not recognize his mistakes, his class is not that of a university level, maybe high school. Avoid him if you can.

The 2nd Roberto Benigni

Professor Calderon is such a nice guy who never hesitates to brighten up everyone's day. He's almost always in a good mood...he reminds me a bit of Roberto Benigni, but not quite as off the wall. I do admit though, that his writing assignments are generally rather lame, but it's definately good practice. He also has you buy this booklet that he prepared himself, which is pretty useless and elementary. But overall, I'm glad I took a class with him. If possible, don't take this class at 8...it was a pain trying to get up on time. However, he's so enthusiastic and cheerful, that it's not impossible to pay attention, though if I had a choice I'd definately take a later class since I'm not exactly an early bird.

Raging Ego, Royal A-hole

Calderon is an arrogant a-hole who specializes in alienating students and making them feel inferior. He grades really hard and had a raging ego throughout the classes. You have to attend class if you don't want a public backlash. I dropped the class and am literally rehinking my Spanish double-major now, because there are only a few professors in the entire department, and it seems like Calderon is unavoidable.

Viva el latinismo!

8 o'clocks (am) are tough, but gustavo always seems happy to be in class.

summary: fun classroom enviroment, 3 or 4 short oral presentations, lame workbook, good student interaction, attendence is major component of your grade.

final thought: Gustavo's enthusiasm pulls the class along.

Prof. Calderon is one of the coolest teachers I have ever had the pleasure to learn from. He is animated in class, and enthusiastic about teaching. Although at times he can seem a bit disorganised, he makes the class interesting and something to look forward to. His homework load is light, but consistent, and productive in the number one goal in the class, to learn the language and culture. His tests really depend on your background and Spanish experience. The books that he uses vary, but most are good reads. Prof. Calderon is a great teacher, with a great style of teaching.

Unfortunatly there are few choices of professors to take in the spanish department. If you do have to take Prof. Calderon, beware! He requires that you buy only the poorly written readers that he wrote himself that are neither interesting or enlightning. He seems to never prepare for class, making it difficult for the students to follow the lessons or understand the assignments. The civilization of spanish america class is taught out of cronological order and the assignments are vauge and remedial. He makes up new rules as he goes along. Be patient because he is stubborn and will not listen to the students.
