An awesome Teacher

Dr. Carrillo knows her stuff. Her lectures are planned and organzied. So there are no surprises. She is easy to get along with and she has no problem with helping you get the best grade you can. Homework requirements are extremely reasonable. 2 commentaries (2-3 pages) and 1 research paper (9-10 pages)..The midterm is short answer which she gives you a study for in advance. If you use the study guide the midterm is a breeze..When you leave this class, any ideas you had about Raza women have in one way or another been modifed.......thus the result of excellent teaching........

Great Content - Delivery needs work

I agree with most of the other postings. She really knows her shit, but needs to work on how to get it across to students. How can such an interesting topic be made boring? We read the best Chicana and Raza women authors, but some of the readings are way too theory based and lack practical implementation and the lectures are boring. I did appriciate that she offers extra credit for community involvment, all Ethnic Studies classes should do that. Worth taking.

Over all good class...can be bit boring

My first impression of Dr. Carillo's class was that it was really boring. However, as the class continues it does get more interesting. You can tell that she is very highly educated and knows her stuff. That sometimes can be a downfall if you dont know your big words! The readings are ok. Some are pretty dry and over analytical. The discussions in class are the most interesting. You are requiered to submit two two page write-ups of the readings. Then you are also to lead the class in a discussion. Not too bad as long as you read. It is a lot of reading!! Over all a good class but can be boring at times. Speak up...she likes that and you get major kudos!

Worth taking

Very intelligent professor. She really knows her shit!! Her lectures can be really boring though. She tends to read word for word out loud straight from her notes(not too engaging). Needs to work on her clasroom presentation. Readings are hard core. 3-4 articles per class. Reader compiled by professor ($30) and Carla Trujillo's Living Chicana Theory, Sandra Cisineros's Woman Hollaring Creek. Mostly good authors, but some a little too theoreical and lacking real world praxis.

Take her class

Dr. Carrillo is a great teacher. Her class is fortunately not exactly setup in lecture form; it was rather in the form of seminars. It was very stimulating and interesting to actually hear the views of your classmates. She's extremely organized and has command of the class. I definitley learned a lot and was exposed to immense information. The knowledge inspires me to wanna learn more. Take a class with Dr. Carrillo, I know I will!

PROFESSOR CARRILLO IS AN INSPIRATIONAL PROFESSOR!!

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST COURSE I'VE TAKEN IN THE RAZA DEPARTMENT. SHE IS OVERLY KNOWLEDGEABLE FOR THIS COURSE. WE READ A VARIETY OF BOOKS SO IT KEPT THE CLASS INTERESTING AND SHE ALWAYS FACILITATED AN OPEN DISCUSSION, REGARDLESS OF STUDENTS' OPINIONS. FORTUNATELY, THIS COURSE WAS FOLLOWED BY A STUDY TOUR OF MEXICO CITY SO THE STUDENTS THAT WERE ABLE TO TRAVEL SAW WHAT WE READ ABOUT FOR THEMSELVES. IT WAS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE AND I WILL BE ALWAYS GRATEFUL TO HER FOR IT. THANK YOU, PROFESSOR!!!!! THE MATERIAL WAS INTERESTING, SO THE CLASS WASN'T DIFFICULT, IF YOU PAY ATTENTION AND READ.

I found her to be quite shy at first, yet exicted about her class. She is not only extremely intelligent but very inciteful about Mexican history as well as U.S. history. I have learned so much in her class. Her energy is delightful. There are two essays to write as well as a mid-term and a 15 page research paper. However, this is very helpful in truly capturing the dynamics of the U.S. and Mexican connection.
