a very good professor

In his class, you do have to pay attention because a lot of the exam questions are from the lecture. You will have to write two paper on the reading that he assigned, but the TA grade it easily. Prof Carrington has a very bright personality. You can learn a lot from him if you are willing to. Prof Carrington admit that he is a homosex, but this class is not about homo sexuality at all, I think that is just pure bais. Do what you should do then you can pass this class without any problem!

Fun Class

The first day of class, a friend of mine dropped this course because she thought that this class was going to be too hard and take too much time. I was also worried but i decided to stick with the class. Attendance was graded everyday which is great for non-slackers. There are also quiz questions every week which you can discuss with your classmates before answering.(Almost everyone gets these questions right) There will be a mc midterm and a final which you will have to answer with your cps remote pad but that's alright since you get the results for the midterm and the final in just a couple hours. BTW the midterm and final questions are very easy and are from the vocabulary and the quiz questions. In overall this was one of the easiest classes that i have taken at sfsu. Prof. Carrington was very knowledgeable about the subject and answered everyones questions at the end of each class, followed the syllabus, had great attitude during the lectures. Take his class!!!

Intense, Wise, Super Smart and Kind of Fun

He is a hard ass, but those are the best looking asses, no? But seriously, you are going to learn so much about sex, you will never be the same. You will be happier, less uptight, more aware, and a much better lover, as long as you learn something from this class. He requires two papers, attendance everyday, quizzes, and a midterm and final. He uses an electronic interactive classroom system where you bring your remote control pad. You use it to tell him you are here, and to answer quiz questions. He lets you discuss the quiz questions with those around you, so don't sit with dummies. He genuinely cares about his students and I found that if you send an email to him about the course content, he is right on it and spends a lot of time responding. He covers history, anthro, sociology, econ, religion, and some psych: he is very well rounded.

Instead of Human Sexuality it should have been Homo Sexuality

I was dissapointed after looking foward to this class because I thought it would cover variations in "sexuality". Somehow every topic he would cover would somehow have to tie with homosexuality. Half of the semester he covered history of sex and homosexuality. The other half the history of aids and homosexuality. Boring class. I thought by the end of the semester I would have explored various types of sexuality for example, those who explore with animals, kids, role playing and all the other fun and interesting stuff I expected. Instead she only spent way to much time focused on history aids and homosexuality which everyone is already sick of hearing about. Honestly, I learned nothing. I learned more about sexual variations in one day by surfing the web. He dislikes men who aren't gay.

Carrington is fair

Dr. Carrington is a great professor that really wants his students to learn the material and to pass his class. He is willing to help outside of class time and is easily availble to talk to through e-mail and office hours. Carrington allows you to correct your mistakes so that you learn from them instead of having to deal with not understanding.

High Standards, Great Teacher

I was shocked and disappointed to read a few of the reviews about Doctor Carrington. He states his sexual orientation once, and does not push issues of homosexuality at all---this class is about DEVIANCE so obviously that issue will come up over and over, as sexuality is the "lens" he uses to examine how deviance is socially constructed. His papers have seemingly insane standards, but they are very manageable if you get help, and your writing will improve ten-fold. I highly recommend Carrington for anybody who is willing to work hard and learn sociology subject matter with an open mind

Brilliant!

Dr. Carrington is the most intelligent professor I have ever had in college. He truly has a command and passion for his profession. I think the last two people who posted messages must be homophobic. Dr. Carrington simply states his sexual orientation the first day so it doesn't become an issue because there are close minded homophobes, like the last two messages, out there. The class is very demanding. His papers are ball busters but he is willing to help people out who seek it. His lectures are very informative as well. He used some really cool movies to change up the boredom of lecture. I can't say enough good things about Chris. Take him!

Strongly recommend

What you see is what you get when you take a class with Dr. Carrington. He outlines his expectations very clearly the first day of class. He is a tough grader, but he's also fair. There is a lot of writing, but the writing skills that Carrington teaches in his classes does indeed improve your writing in other courses. In an academic arena where professors often try to make themselves objectively dull or force you to follow their beliefs, Carrington stands out. It's rare to find a professor who's opinionated, yet who isn't overbearing. Carrington can articulate his ideas effectively while respecting disagreement at the same time. Carrington covers mountains of material in his classes. There is a good mix of lecture, film, and discussion. However, it sometimes feels like the class is rushed. It's not uncommon for the class to see a thought provoking video, and then never have a discussion about it due to time constraints. Nevertheless, you will learn a great deal in Carrington's classes because of the sheer wealth of information he throws at you.

An amazing professor!

Dr. Carrington truly cares for and respects his students. Albeit insane at first, the guidelines for our papers (only five or less passive verbs per page) enabled me to create "active" prose. My voice became stronger. The lectures always seemed to get off track somehow. The lecture outline written on the board often times remained just words, rather than information needed for upcoming tests.

One of the best professors and classes I have taken in 3 semesters! Yes, he is hard but lets you know up front what is expected. I looked forward to his lectures every class! He is well versed in many areas not just sociology and he does want students to actually walk away with valuable information. This is not an easy class but is very doable if you are willing to work hard. He was always available outside of class or by email. I can't say enough about Dr. Carrington, I think he is one of the best professors at SFSU.

SF State's best professor!

Dr. Carrington is the best professor i have ever had. He surpasses all others with his extensive knowledge. His lectures are clear and full of interesting information. However, you should not take his class if you are not prepared to work. He expects a lot; however, he is very fair. Good writing skills are necessary, but he will help you learn if you need it (this has helped me extensively in other classes). This was my second class with Carrington, and I am taking one over the summer and another one next semester. He's great!

A great challenge and well worth it

Yes, he is a challenging professor. Yes, revising your prose over and over again is a pain. But anyone taking this class will become a better writer without a doubt. He demands near perfection and is very helpful and willing to get you there. All course expectations are clearly stated, so as long as you take this as a no-nonsense class, show up, and give 110%, you will do well. Carrington himself is extremely knowledgable and very interesting to listen to. He shows some great videos that spark plenty of interesting class discussions. He's a great teacher, take him once and you'll want to take him again. A few other students and I would comment how we would love to just sit for a few hours and pick his brain about all types of different topics since he seems to know about everything. Oh ya, and the way he speaks... it's like every sentence has been revised in his mind before he spits it out. It's all perfect, eloquent, precise english. That is something I have come to appreciate in hind sight since I have some teachers now at a different school that ramble, go off on tangents, can't answer questions directly, or can't answer questions that deviate from the text. The teachers I have now have little passion, knowledge, or speaking skills that I've come to appreciate in Carrington.

Dr. Carrington gives a lot of work, but you'll learn from him

Dr. Carrington is an interesting lecturer. But the amount of work you spend on perfecting the book review and midterm and final is too much. There's a midterm where citation counts otherwise you will be marked down same with the final exam. And then you have the book review where you have to write using all active verbs. A big pain, and I think is needless work because you don't even get your paper back any ways. Besides the pain of perfecting your work, his class is interesting, and he's dedicated to teach.

If you are willing to work hard...

Dr. Carrington will make you work hard, like any good teacher will. He is very demanding of his students, however you will become a better writer and student because of this. Although at times he seems intimidating to speak with, he is ready and willing to help students if they are willing to give effort. You will take many, many, many notes in his class, but the lectures are very informative and presented in an organized manner. The midterm and final are easy if you pay attention and don't miss class (daily roll is taken). The hardest part of the class is an eight page book review. In order to pass the class, it is required that you limit your use of passive verbs and begin to write in a well-structured thought out way. This class is by far the hardest class I have taken, but if you work hard it is worth while.

A professor for the serious learner

Dr Carrington serves his students well by displaying a breadth and depth of knowledge pertaining to Sociology, the social sciences, and ethnography. He approaches the classroom focused on one primary mission: to educate students. He achieves his mission by checking our understanding and making sure the learner got his point. In addition, he remains successful in fostering an atmosphere of care and concern.

Being a student in his 394 class taught me to write a better paper as well as what it takes to complete an ethnography, an book/journal review, and an annotated bibliography.

The other students and I raved about Dr Carrington outside of class and this stands as a significant marker of a good professor.

I highly recommend taking Dr. Carrington for any class to any student serious about their education.

Interesting lectures but poor two-way communicator

I feel this teacher's lectures are interesting, easy to follow, and well organized. However, his idea of leading a discussion is to say, "any questions?" He seems to take little interest in his students' personalities or opinions and is often condescending. Asking a question in class can be an intimidating experience because he does not listen well and is more interested in giving out information than in communicating. His one-size-fits-all idea of what makes good writing (the # of prepositions per page)is insulting to those of us who are skilled writers. Carrington would be best in the auditorium sized classroom, not in the smaller classrooms of under 50 students.

He is one of the most interesting professors I have ever met. Class goes by quickly most of the time, and if you have any question, he answers them to the best of his knowledge. A Wonderful Professor-A Great Mind

Let me just first say that Dr. Carrington is a wonderful teacher!!! I must admit that most of the time when I'm chosing my classes, I take into consideration how difficult the professor might be, and then I try to take the easiest one. Before I took 464, I was advised to "avoid Carrington," but I took him anyway because I was interested in the class. Boy, was I glad that I took him!! There's so many wonderful things I could say about that class...Dr. Carrington is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, he speaks with such a level of proficiency and aplomb that I sit there, not only mesmerized by his words, but also his lessons, he definitely provokes thought through his lectures and always checks to see if it "makes sense" to us. He is VERY well-read!...He has got a book for EVERYTHING--every class, you'll hear him say, at least once or twice: "There's a great book on that..." and he'll proceed to recite the title, author, and year-he's great! He is wonderful in encouraging students to improve their writing skills to a necessary level, and he is very willing to work with you on that. Although I didn't follow the method of revision that he so clearly spells out for us (long story), I definitely learned this method that will help me through my Sociology career as a student and far beyond. I've got nothing but good stuff to say about Dr. Carrington (but I know this review is becoming quite lengthy). I'll write another one, I'm sure, because I'm taking 468 with him this summer. Kudos to you Chris; and I strongly recommend taking one of his classes, or shoot, take 'em all!

I read the reviews for Dr. Carrington before i signed up for this class and to tell you the truth, it sorta discouraged me to take his class because of the workoverload. However, I did, and I dont regret it. I enjoyed the material and lectures in class, it was defintely an eye-opener to the world, and how we perceive prejudice. Films were fine. However I did have conflict with the final paper because it was overwhelming, my english writing is not that well so i dont know how i did on that. and the Final Exam was too long. I dont think the class needed a final exam because Carrington already tested on the first two books, why repeat the material? I would have done much better on my paper if i didnt worry about both at the end of the year.

No teacher deserves an "A". There was always room for growth and improvement. What was learned in this class was that be to opened minded and look beyond. Good lecturer, and respondent for questions asked in the class. Also was taught never to use the past tense in writing. I think I was getting it towards the end of the semester. One last thought, what was learned and taught in this class was helpful in the real world. ( P.S. I did get the idea of past-present tense)

His only concern is Tenure

To think that this man replaced the great Angela Davis is in itself an overt form of social control. He was essentially hired to play mixed boy who looks white and does not break the rules. He plays the part well. He is not innovative nor exciting and to think that he has his classes reading Social Mindscapes and he goes on and on about sociological imaginations and lacks the very essence of what the great C. Wright Mills and Zerubavel demand all great sociologist maintain and obtain. I am not impressed by him and I am feel pain in the deepths of my being everytime I am to sit in his class as he skips over words that he do not know how to pronounce. Yet he has the gall to insist that his students would pick a book becuase it is short and reject another because it is long. Give us some credit, Carrington. Don't sterotype us. Christopher Carrington is a relief! There are so few personable and inelligent teachers that when I find one with personality and passion for the subject they are teaching I am shocked and pleasantly surprised. He is definitely honest, thorough, and very straight forward with his thoughts and teachings. People not used to hearing the truth will mistake those traits for condesencion and rudeness. The workload's not too bad, you actually have to think in this class, the lectures are very interesting and by the end of the course you will actually have learned something. DR. Carrington is a very interesting, funny, and helpful teacher. There are 2 book reviews(quizzes), 1 paper, and a final. Books that are being selected are very interesting. For the book reviews, don't get scared by him, they are not hard at all!! One of the reasons is because Carrington provides detail explanation and examples. He is very well prepared, and very helpful. He will help you not only question about the class, but other useful information, such as which sociology class you should take, etc. If he can't answer your questions,he would recommend you to other instructors. I enjoyed both classes I took with Christopher Carrington because he had a great knowledge of each subject. It was helpful in the field methods course because he is currently conducting field research so his knowledge is greater than that of a textbook. He provided current information and helped to prepare us for research work in the field of sociology. However, because of class size and time restraints it was hard to recieve personla attention without visiting him during office hours. Also, I would've liked to recieve more personal notes on my research paper explaining why it was a great paper. I do understand he had several other classes to tend to during this time. I think it is more the fault of the university and the limitations of the sociology department that I did not receive more personal attention.

The main reason that I am taking "Deviance and Conformity" this semester is because of my experience in "Social Psych" last semester. I can honestly say that out of all the classes I've ever taken I've learned the most from him. The only problem, though, is that much of what I have learned in his class has turned in to heated discussions with friends and family members!!!!! For example, issues such as circumcision and contoversy surrounding the bible. Please whoever reads this take at least one of his classes-you won't be sorry!!!!! The reason i gave him less than an "A" grade is because i think that way too much rides on his final exam and i felt that our class was not adequately prepared to do well on it. I had an A on every exam prior to the final and i ended up with a B- grade in the class, which upset me greatly. I think he is probably one of the best teachers in sfsu but he needs to prepare his students for his harsh and unfair final exam... i guess i am biased because i did so poorly on it, but i studied very hard for it and still must have done poorly for me to jump from an A grade to a B- from just one test... Carrington needs to be more fair on his final exams and at least give some feedback to students about how they did.. i still have no idea how mine was

In response to the previous post arguing that the system must be rigged. You must not have been in the class. Dr. Carrington came into class the first week of December, handed out the web address for teacher review, and encouraged everyone to go and do a review. So 7 students of the 50 in the course filled it out in the following two days. Get over it loser. You must have an ax to grind given how poorly you did in the class. Carrington is brilliant, fair, concerned about his students, interested in drawing the connections to real life. And how many other professors encourage you to go out and anonymously review them? He challenges you and he sets high expectations. If you go and talk to him, he is warm and personable and interested in your life. Some people hate him because he's openly gay, but that's there problem. I found his classroom to be a tolerant place where I always felt comfortable.

This system will only work if people are honest in their reviews. One person deciding to submit 7 reviews to beef up his rating doesn't help anyone, including the instructor.

Dr. Carrington's "Devience & Conformity" class is extremely informative. It is a great class to take if you are the type of person happy and able to "work unsupervised" so to speak. Dr. carrington, although a wealth of knowledge, lacks some essential inter-personal skills, which prevent me from rating him or his class as exceptional, (i.e. an "A"). It's really too bad that such a brilliant person is left short by thier seeming ego-centrism. Still, it definately is a class in which you will feel challenged and learn much.

Far too often, I listen to the same old lectures about this and that (i.e. ya, I got it.. capitalism sucks blahblahblah) but he manages to bring truly original and complelling twists to the material presented. Don't be freaked out by the tests or book reviews and be prepared for freverish note-taking - but of stuff you actually want to remember. Ultimately, Carrington succeeds at escaping the self-impressed insularity that permeates so much of academia. I fear his kind will slip through the cracks and fail to receive the respect (and salaries) they deserve.

Be prepared for a lot of information! Dr. Carrington is skillful, competent, and organized. He shows courage in lecturing about issues that are sensitive and embarrasing, but manages to use humor that keeps the class interesting and in balance. He is fair and has a style to teaching that makes you want to keep up, because the material is interesting to us a human beings. We realize how narrow our thinking has been. He opens up a whole new world for us, by challenging you to think about the world we live in with all of it's rules and norms. I admire him for teaching me as much as he did in such a short time. It has been great!

I was told by a friend thatI HAD to take this class with Carrington, there was no actual need to take this particular soc class but I did anyway and I thank the stars that i did. Carrington is brillient, he has renewed my fasination with the social sciences. Carrington's hyper intellegence is seen throughout the semester as well as the lectures. At times the readings are rather thick, but once you're able to get through them, there is this sense of new aquired knowledge. Also at times, as smart as Carrington is, he seems rather unapproachable, in the sense that you never see the relaxed side. the one last thing is he scare tactic of the three asbsents, although going to class is always in the best intrest of education, there are times when you just can show up and that might be over three times. Other than that I'm glad that Carrington is in the Sociology department and I hope that he stays around for a long while.

Carrington knows his stuff. The course over all is not hard at all. There is a simple way to pass his class 1) show up 2) DO THE READINGS!! 3) chime in every once and a while. Carrington is more than willing to answer any question you have. However, I think as smart as Carrington is, when it comes to his grading.... it seems a little lax. But if its in your favour all the better. In general Carringtion is insperational for soc majors.

Mr. Carrington is a really outstanding professor. He is highly education in a number of backgrounds and brings that forth in his lectures. Mr. Carrington is a professor who actually incorporates the reading into the classroom by discussing the material with the students. This is quite rare in my personal opinion and much appreciated! The only drawback to the class is that it was alot of material at once due to it being a summer class and I would have liked some feedback on a paper that was due at the end. Overall though, the class is really enlightening.

I like his class a lot. He is very well read and very well prepared for class. It seems that sometimes we go off the subject, but these side conversations are still linked to the matter at hand for the class: Social inequality. The books we read were very interesting, and I wish we talked more about the readings. I suspect part of the reason we didn't is because a number of the students didn't keep up with the reading. At the start of the semester I was terrified that this would be an impossibly tough class, but it hasn't turned out so bad. The work is very engaging, and not that difficult for me. We have had two tests that were not so hard if you did the reading and studied. We will have a final that is cummulative. We also have to do a book review that has to be VERY good, and a lot of the grade for the class depends on it. I haven't finished it yet...At the start of the class he made it clear that he wasn't an easy teacher. He has high expectations, but he's not a mean guy. He has a sense of humor, and the class is fun for me. I genuinely like him as a professor and recommend him highly (unless you want to take an easy or boring class that you never would be missed in--he takes roll almost every time) the semester isn't over yet, but hopefully i will get an A. thats what i have so far

What an amazing professor. So prepared and so easy to understand. His lectures are provocative and fascinating. Some hetersexual, white males (particularly homophobic or conservative ones) feel uncomfortable in the class because they cannot cope with the perspectives he presents, but he is very fair to everyone, allowing each person to state what they think and he is very conscientious about fairness in grading. The workload is intense, but the payoff is worth it. His academic reputation is stellar and he is so wonderful and friendly once you have the courage to go and see him. He loves to talk with students so go to his office hours or email him. He will definitely take the time to respond.

Christopher Carrington is a fine researcher and academic figure, but he is hypocritical in his actions and very subjective in his grading. I wrote what were very good essays on his tests and he often knocked points off for things that I think were differences of opinion or interpretations of the material. The course is deviance and conformity, and while he preaches that deviance from norms is a positive thing, i think he is confused because he often is not willing to listen to opinions that differ from his. I was particularly ticked off at his attendance policy and his own attendance. If you miss a few classes, he will kill you come grade time. But, he himself was absent from class at least 5 times in the semester. It's frustrating to come to school for one class and have it cancelled once every other week on average.

-2 midterms - 1 final exam -1 book review//All exams are consist of 1long essay, few short essays, MCs, T&F

He is fair when it comes to grades. He gives you straight-forward guidelines on book reviews on what he wants to see. Unlike some other teachers that grade only on how he/she feels like giving you. He is also very knowledgeable in this subject. He will give you personal feedback if you needed it. One thing about him his that don't try to argue with him about things that already believe in. He is rather stubborn. WARNING: If you are anti-gay, do not take his class. He is actually a very good instructor. You can learn a lot out of his class. One bad thing, he himself has poor attendance but he will drop students' grade when they have more than 3 absences. The bright side is that he does not take attendance every class lecture. Only occasionally.

I took his course in the summertime and well, he tried his best to work with his students, however it didn't go all that well. Basically he used the same requirements for his normal class as he did for the summer one! That meant two four books to be read in less than a 5 week time period! That is nuts, I know through he tried it, many people didn't do too hot when it came to the final b/c they were completing their analysis of the book they read due the same day we all had a final! hopefully he has changed this and used a reader for the shorter classes, otherwise I wouldn't recommend him, despite him being knowledgable in his teaching, his requirements will do more harm than good in the students learning or the subject matter.
