Best advisor in Biology Dept.

Dr. Catena is extremely knowledgeable regarding materials taught in his lab. His instructions are concise and to the point while not being too hard. His homeworks and quizzes are of the right difficulty that it stimulates thought while not being rediculously hard.

The best thing about Dr. Catena is that he is extremely approachable and available outside of class when and if a student needs either academic advising or help with class work.

As a Microbiology major, I have switched academic advisor from Dr. Bernstein to Dr. Catena for this very reason. Advising had never been a more pleasant experience because Dr. Catena takes his time to review and advise your academic progress. I feel fortunate to have had him as my academic advisor, and would like to give thanks to him here for two very pleasant years studying at SFSU.

What can I say, Dr. Catena is the man! For anyone in the biology majors that need to take General Microbiology, or anyone else who wants a challenging look at our world as we know it, take Dr. Catena's lecture. He also teaches the GE class, Bio 326 Disease! class that satisfies 3rd segment requirements. His virtue is his style and that he's there for the students to learn from. Since any general biology class can be overwhelming with new concepts, his homework load is light with a few papers and quizzes. However, this class IS challenging and demanding. For this, Dr. Catena offers multiple office hour sessions and review sessions before every midterm (about 3 total). So don't be afraid! He's one of the most pleasant people to talk with one on one! To this day I still enjoy talking with him when he has some free time. This man is truly there for the students and not going through motions like most professors. Take his class! Take his class! Take his class! He may look like he feels uncomfortable doing it, but I know he loves receiving high fives!
