Profesor Danner is a nice guy

Professor Danner is really cool. He is really nice and funny. He relates well to the class and lets the class out early. The homework he gives is really difficult and time consuming. If you take his class don't plan on missing any lectures because that's what will be on the test. The tests are pretty easy, and what ever is on the quizzes will be on the tests. I would reccomend him but just know that you are going to have to spend time doing homework and pay attention to what he says in class.

******Tough but Good******

Positive aspects:

Professor Don Danner is hard noised, stubborn, and would not give and A in his class unless you give him your first born and a pint of blood, but he is by fare the most knowledgeable and experienced professor in this department that I have studied under. I myself work in the technology sector and found it was refreshing and engaging to talk and argue different aspects of this field. I must say that I learned a lot from his course. He states in class that he tries to keep it light meaning humorous because computer classes tends to be dry. But this means that he likes to antagonize studentsmainly the boisterous individuals. Good luck!

Negatives:

He assigns "way to much homework" and does not give students enough time to finish his quizzes and tests in class. I believe this is the only class he teaches so he checks every assignment himself with great zeal and scrupulous detail.

Grading structure:

He assigns 10 Homework assignments, which take hours to complete. Gives 4 quizzes a midterm and a final. One of the final homework assignments is a 5-page website. Grading system is as follows: homework 17.5%, Class participation 10%, quizzes 17.5%, midterm 20%, Final project, "the web site" 15%, final 20%.

Why isn't there more teachers like him??

Very intimidating person at first, but he is actually a very funny guy. I like when he says "fuzzy"! Anyways, don't let his syllabus scare you, because it's actually quite simple. Just look at it as one week at a time. If you know computer components and softwares (especially EXCEL), you will pass his class easily. Personally, I find his homework/projects harder than Exams/Finals. Because his exams are 90% from his lectures. Maybe like one or two questions from the book. I never brought the book!!! His homework/projects takes a lot of time to complete, especially the homepage project. I never build a homepage before, so I taught this was gonna be major hard. I'm glad I was wrong. Not that hard, but takes LOTS of time to build an appealing web-page. I suggest working on the homepage one month before the due date. Very fun, and learn a lot about homepages and how internet sites are built. As for exams, the first quiz (out of four) is probably the hardest because you don't know what to expect. He does however, drops the lowest quiz score. One mid-term, and Lastly, you get a one page cheat sheet on the final. So get ready for 4 point font!!

awesome teacher

Danner is definitely the best teacher to take for BICS 263. He is very approachable for class questions, even if you bump into him walking around campus, he'll always stop and chat with you for a few minutes. He is always in the 24 hour computer lab so approaching him with BICS questions is easy. In addition, he replies to students' e-mails and sends them to all of his students so they can all benefit from the questions. The best part of his class was making my own website. Although the assignment was at first intimidating, Danner holds workshops and web clinics which will walk you through the process of making a website. The project will be a lot of fun as long as you don't lag. Although Danner's homework assignments can at times be time consuming, they are relevant to BICS and help you learn skills that are used in the "real world," for example Excel and computer components. People who whine about his assignments usually wait till the night before to do the homework, his assignments DON'T take forever to do and they definitely aren't the most difficult. Since I've taken his class, I can point out my own computer problems and fix them without hesitation. I would definitely recommend Danner for anyone who's willing to learn BICS inside and out, plus have fun at the same time. He is the MOST FAIR professor I've taken at SFSU, and his classes are well worth your tuition money.

Slackers need not apply

I took Don Danner last semester for Bics 263 and I really enjoyed the class. I was totally prepared for BICS 363 because the stuff he tought us was actually useful! He treats his students like adults--unlike some other SFSU professors! He expects us to work and in return we learn useful computer information--like how to create a web page, and how to use excel. The most challenging part of the course was to create computer systems by price. Since I don't really know anything about computers this was challenging but now I know what to look for when buying a computer and I know now how to fix it when it's broken! These are things that I wanted to learn and are useful in my life--not like the stuff you learn in the cattle call sections of other BICS 263 classes! Danner also rewards the students who are trying. Slackers need not apply--they are not tolerated and I appreciate that. If you try in his class and he knows your trying he will help you and grade you accordingly. If you never come to class, have an attitude, and can't deal with a teacher that has a lively personallity, then go back to community college and stay out of his class--you'll be wasting valuable space that someone who does want to learn would like! I highly recommend Danner for BICS 263--you won't be sorry!

Good luck if your take Don Danner

What can I say professor Danner knows his computers; however he seems to have a problems with teaching. His lectures are fast and although he makes it seem like he wants you to ask questions, he looks at you funny if you ask the wrong questions. At the end of the semester, he has you do a web page (as an end of the smester project). And he makes you show it to him as well as to the whole class, but be warned he is very quick to make remarks that can easily hurt someones feeling. He has preference of white males, so if you are a white male, take his class. If you want to get points on your participation grade, make sure you ask a lot of questions. One more thing, even if you try your hardest in this class, you might end up only with a C average, because he is very demanding with tests and homework. If you have no other choice but to take this teacher, be sure to read the books before class so that you can follow his lectures clearly My advise is, if your going to take Don Danner, be prepared to eliminate your social life and sleep!

I wouldn't recommend him.

Danner is mean, because he picks on people in class. His homework assignments are reasonable. His tests get boring after awhile because he asks the same questions over and over.

Funny teacher who knows his stuff!

I had a great time in Danner's class. During the first day about 50 people tried to add! He'll add as many as he can so make an effort to sit in the class if you really need it. I was 2nd till the last person and I got added! Anyways, he's very clear cut about his grading policy and homework assignments. His grades are based on 9 or 10 homework assignments which are easy to do as long as you attend class, a midterm, a final, 4 quizzes, and a web project. Don't let all this scare you. His lectures might be jump from here to there but most of it will be on your exam. He also has a lot of "fuzzy" questions which are opinion and why you support your answers. He drops the lowest test and quiz grades which helped a lot cause I got a "D" on the first one. His final project is a web page of you or anything you want. My advice is to start on that as soon as you can or else attend a web clinic which helped me a lot. I did mine 2 days before it was due. I stressed out a lot about it which was unneccessary. Most people started way ahead of me, but I think my page was the best of all! His tests are also kinda repetitive so save your old exams as some of the same questions will appear again and again. I think this class more than prepared me for BICS 363 and BICS 265. I even taught myself some basic html language in the process of the web design. He only teaches night class so for those of you who want a good teacher and learn something new, then he's the one for you.

Don Danner is very good teacher. He encourages questions and class interaction. He has a good sense of humor. He teaches subject matter well. He not only teaches the basics, but keeps current with technology and teaches it in class. He also keeps the class interesting. I wish he taught upper division bics classes. Tests are very straight forward. You will wish you had more teachers like him.

I took him in a summer session and it was his first time teaching it. There were 4 quizzes and 9 homework assignments. EASY EASY EASY!! The first 3hws were to write an essay on any subject. He wanted us to get used to internet researching. The second was to email him your email address. the third was to find the answers to his questions on the internet. (ex: Where is Kramer (seinfield) orignally from ) those were easy. We had about 3 homework assignments about Microsoft Excel. One final project: Create a website.

His final was easy too! WE got to use a cheat sheet (one page) and if you want to pass the final in flying colors just find your old tests and use that to study. Mr. Danner is the "King of Copy & paste" So for the final write all the correct answers from previous test and you'll be okay. However i must warn you that his final is 13 pages long. (but that's because he leaves you ALOT of space to answer the questions (Final- has about 10 essay questions coming from the previous tests and about 6 excel problems)/n

He is infact one of the best teachers in the BICS department (and everyone knows how horrible that department is) If you see him on the schedule, pick him!! He is a very kind person and tries to get to know all the students. (and their names)

Mr.Danner is a wonderful teacher on the computer subject he is teaching and on the personal level, too. He is very kind and quite patient with students who have hard time to catch. For him, there is no stupid question. Even your question maybe too simply easy for the rest of the group, he always let you feel answer a question even just for one student worth his time and is the least he can do. I wish he could teach more classes for the dept. Unfortunately, the pay wasn't much. Too bad for all the students who really want to study. According to the review I read, this dept needs great teachers and needs it really desprately, why can they hire teachers like him as a full-time professor? Because he doesn't have PH.D , I don't see it a problem, other with PH.D did not do their job well. We students only care if the instructor is knowledge enough, if he/she care the students enough, patient enough. The piece of paper and title did not mean that much for us. Although there is one thing I don't like is that he is too soft on students who talks nonsense in the class. All the other students come to class to listen to Mr.Danner not the noise from others. I also don't like those sexual joks that was mentioned by students because of Mr. Danner's personal life style. I found those joks cheap, low class and not related to the instructor's teaching. Mr. Danner was too kind to laugh about it. I think there are a lot of classmates agree with my comment to the class and Mr. Danner.

Don Danner is one of the best professors you can have if you plan to take BICS 263. He understands the troubles and difficulties that arise when taking this unfamiliar class. With that in mind he moves at a comfortable pace so many of the students will understand. Although, the homework assignments take hours to complete, it surely is beneficial not only for the class, but for future uses as well. The exams are from his lectures with 10% from the book. His final is truly as he will say "a work of art." That final was pure agony. It was a bit more than 2 and a half hours of continuos writing. You had to keep writing quickly or else in jeopardy of not completing it. The questions were more than fair, but it just took time. Also,he is very understanding if you're late with homework. Finally, he is a fun professor which teaches well. This is one class I know I will remember because it taught me alot of things that I will surely use in the future.
