Heavy Work Load!!!!!

Oh my gosh! i only took this class with wei ming is because she was the only professor who is teaching aas 206 the semester. she assigns a lot of work and 20 hours of community service? now that's crazy! i was taking 15 units!! that is a lot of work. aside from english 414 and all my major classes, i also had to take this class!!!! too much work. do not ever take this teacher if you are taking classes as a full time! because just this one class is like a full time class!!!!!!!! toooo much work. she isn't a hard grader. many presentations. many essays!!!! and also the major assignments was the research portfolio and creating a website for the final. her work is just too crazy and too much. and the most stupid thing is that she has attendance questions. she always take attendance! never miss one!!!! and during the attendance, she would ask you a question when she calls your name! isn't that a waste of time!!! and she makes you purchase all these books!!! honestly, just purchase the book that you are assigned to for your presentation. she also assigns you to write an essay response to the book you were assigned to read and post your essay online. so just purchase this book. i didn't even read the whole book for this assignment. did some research and bs a little. i didn't even have time to read her other books. so dont even bother. the only thing that is neutral about her is that she gives extra credit. 2 pts each. you just attend an event and write about it. i think she gives you 2 points as long as you write something, but have to be at least a page. double space. so if you want take this class. you can get an A if you dont miss class. she marks you off each time you miss class. 2 points off. that's why i had to do extra credit. but do not take this class if you have too much work from other classes. especially when this is not part of your major class. trust me....a lot of work..... oh yeah, she makes you cook and bring a dish to class on the last day for potluck. waste of time, too!

Great teacher

Wei Ming is a great teacher and she was definitely a suitable teacher for this class because she herself is hapa. I'd hihgly recommend this class for anyone of mixed asian heritage because it will help you cope with mixed race issues and empower you as a person of mixed race. Wei Ming is really involved in the hapa community and Hapa Issues Forum and I appreciate everything she is doing for that cause. However, she did give a little too much work in my opinion, but what I learned in the process was very helpful. I'd recommend Wei Ming any day

Cool teacher

well what can i say about wei ming? the teacher is freakin cool. She makes you do a skit presentation in a group that you stick with the whole semester and you actually end up like family. i really like her teaching style. shes young and funny. and when she has problems, she talks about it before class. shes willing to compromise and i like that alot. the group project is soooo fun. or maybe the group i was with was really really cool. but yeah, if i could, id take her class freakin every semester. the only thing i didnt like, however, was the out of body experience shit...you have to say youre gay or something. i felt kinda weird talking about it, then afterwards, i was like "ah, what the hell. ima have fun with it." so i told people that i knew i was a lesbo wehn i first watched my brothers porn and started drooling....haha funny funny. people thought the teacher was trying to find someone to "date" and was "gay" but though it was stupid, i still had alot of fun in this class. HERes an A to you, miss dariotis.

Take this if you're looking for a discussion-oriented 214 class!

Tests: None. No final exam, but big final group project, and group midterms.

Projects: Be prepared to work in groups and have MANY projects. Don't be scared though -- none of the projects are extremely difficult, she is willing to help you, and it ends up being fun, for the most part.

Homework: Must remember that the class is a WRITING class, so there is written homework and reading assignments to go along with them.

Personality: I'm not Asian American, and I felt welcomed into the conversation, mostly. Sometimes, however, I feel as though Wei-Ming can get in bad moods and want to take it out on the class, but at least she announces it. On the other hand, you can't blame someone for having a bad day.

Lectures: Are more like discussions among classmates. Sometimes, not much lecturing gets done because of the personal stories that students end up telling, but it is entertaining and a learning experience all the while.

Highly reccomended. Would take again.

Expect alot of group project from this teacher.

I hate the group projects in this class. I mean it takes up sooo much time!! GRRR..but her grading system is simple, just points. I hate the fact how she assigns this volunteer community project. Everyone have to contribute 10 freaking hours!! Man, wasted so much of my study time. But yeah, easy class in general. As long as you participate, she will like you. She LOVES DOGS. I don't know why I mention the part about the dogs, but if you get on her good side, things will go well.....But most of time in class, she spend it talking and talking, blah blah, and later class will be over. Expect many assignments from this class.

Take her class if you don't know much about the Asian Am Community

Wei Ming is a great teacher and even though I had her in a different subject as most of the other reviewers in here, I don't think she should receive a review as low as an 'F'. She's a great person and very involved in the community, and does her best to get her students involved...'cuz that's what we need, more community involvement. I would encourage students fresh out of high school to take her classes because they introduce Asian American culture. If you are already involved with the Asian Am community, you're probably not going to enjoy her class at all because of all the projects she assigns. For me, the projects were fun, but I felt that we could have done without a lot of them. The biggest thing that i DID disagree with Wei Ming is the fact that she brings emotional baggage to class. I feel that it is inappropriate for a professor to bring personal issues inside the classroom. We all have issues to deal with, but neither student or professor should bring any drama to the class.

BE ON TIME

Her personality is great, but the structure sucks. Basicially, it's like a high school class, and I am doing well in college because it's nothing like high school. There's projects where you have to be in a skit, it's mainly artistic stuff, which I have no interest in and you have to make a magazine. Another problem I have is with tardy. Instead of just saying attending class is important, you also have to be there on time, or else she deducts points off from your grade.

Wei Ming is cool

FIRST THINGS FIRST: Don't believe the person who keeps bashing on Professor Dariotis. Whoever keeps writting these negative posts is just some shady "individual" that wants to cause havok in the Asian Am Department. I dont even think she taught the classes that the person claimed to take.

Wei Ming was a pretty cool professor and she does not at all deserve all these f*cked up reviews. I say this even after failing her class which is pretty a difficult thing to do. seriously.

I took AAS 214 which would fulfill the Eng. GE. On the first day she told us that the class would be geared towards APA Men issues which wasn't in the class schedule. She assigned about 5 or 6 books only one of which we went over in class as a class. A couple of them were presented by groups and we were supposed to write about the other books in our journals. She assigned one paper to write [which i didn't turn in] and we had to do about 6 or 7 journal prompts [which I never turned in] All the books that she assigned only cost about 12 bucks or so, that were easy to find, and would be a great addition to any personal library. I'd suggest buying them once she starts discussing them so you wouldn't have to buy books that you may not need for the class.

I'm not quite sure how her grading policy went since I bailed out last minute, but from what i heard of the folks that stuck around they all pretty much got As. I figue if you do the work, go to class, and you'll get an A.

She is really easy to talk to, but is a bit unstructured. I was looking to enhance writting skills since the class was supposed to be a writen composition course, but I found that the class was geared more towards exposing various issues than it was to write.

I enjoyed the many class discussions we had and I thought that the whole "coming out" activity was a valid way of introducing the topic of APA Gay Men. I never felt as if she was delved too far into sexual preference and I can only recall discussing it once which was during the "coming out" activity. Though she did assign a book by Russel Leong [a gay author] that we went over in class. She really likes it when folks talk so if you participate in discussions you'll get tons of brownie points.

I'd recommend this teacher to anyone who wants a break from hard ass anal retentive professors that like to lecture. She likes engaging in dialouge which I thought was a plus.

All in all I'd give her a C, only because I was really wanted to learn how to write, but didn't. However I did enjoy her as a teacher and I'm sure that i'll be taking another course from her somewhere down the line.
