A rude, imcompetent teacher who's having an affair with her students

Doreen Deicke is a snotty, rude woman who always talks about her personal life (her son) a lot when it's not even relevant to the class. She's extremely biased and she looks like an ugly witch with her broken teeth and skimpy dresses. She must be having bipolar schizophrenia because she's always moody during her class sessions. This lady even makes friends with her students on Facebook which is illegal. Check out her facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/friends/?id=511777098 to see what I mean. Her teaching imcompetence reflects why the English dept is the worst at SFSU.

Highly recommended.

If you need tuning up on your writing skills, take Ms. Deicke's class. At first, I was intimidated when I stepped into her class; I wasn't ready to be call on when I didn't raise my hand. After a while, I felt comfortable in the environment because she didn't make me feel "stupid" if I answered wrong, but rather she allowed me to think for myself. Her projects and essay topics were interesting and fun. She is helpful and friendly in the one-on-one conferences; this is where you read your essay aloud to her and she offers suggestions and tips which really boost up the essay. If you need help, she is happy to answer questions at her office hours or after class. So if you want to tune up your writing skills to college level, take Ms. Deicke's class. Highly recommended.

Worst English Teacher!!!!

I do not recommend taking Doreen Deicke for English!! I know I'm not the greatest writer but I know I write decent. I received a N/C (no credit) on my first two papers and felt that she was not giving me the help I needed to improve. So out of frustration I dropped her class in the middle of the semester. She loves picking on students when they don't raise their hands. She acts like she personable but she really isn't. Overall, she's a little crazy!!

Outgoing teacher, hard grader

Doreen Deicke is a very outgoing person. When she enters the classroom she always greets everyone with a "Hey guys!" She's very easy to get along with and doesn't ask alot out of you. The assignments she assigns are very reasonable, not very hard at all. There were 6 essays we had to do which included: the first one is ungraded, a mandatory revision on one of your essays which replaces the old grade received, a final research paper and a mandatory final exam which is a practice Jepet. For our final research paper she shortened the page length from 6-10 to 4-7 pages! There were 2 group presentations (very easy) which had to do with some of the topics on the essays. There were probably only 2 quizzes and they were easy A's. But if you think this class is an easy A, it isn't! You have to work for that A and do real well on the essays. The number one thing to keep in mind on writing essays is to put your point in the very beginning of each paragraph! Doreen really tries to help you out with being a good writer in English and in all of you're other college classes. I reccommend her if you want to learn how to write good essays.

If you want to get your english requirements out of the way, Ms. Deicke is the way to go. She's a great english teacher and even though she does give a bit of homework, she'll teach you what you need to know by the end of the semester. She's a really cool teacher and if your stuggling you can definitely go to her and she'll help you out. I learned a lot this semester from her class. She is a GOOD instructor, totally recommended!!

I took this class, Eng 49/50/115 Accelerated remedial class when I was a freshman. Unlike the "traditional" remedial English classes this class has a more "accelerated" curriculum. We had to take this class for 2 semesters w/the same instructor and w/the same people. The 1st semester (Eng 49/115) satisfied the 49/115 requirement but the material was at the 50 level. The 2nd semester (Eng 50/115) satisfied the 50/115 requirement but the material was at the Eng 114 level. This accelerated program was supposed to let us not only satisfy the remedial requirement but to give us 3 units of Eng 114 if we pass the class successfully and "accelerate" to Eng 214 immediately the fall semester of sophomore yr.

With this in mind, I took this class with Ms. Deicke. She is NOT HARD at all, but she isn't really EASY either. You will have to work for your grade. She is willing to help you after class or in her office hours. For both semesters, we had 5 essays w/all of them being interesting topics. I strongly advise newly admitted freshman who are reading this and need to take remedial English classes to take this class w/Ms. Deicke as your instructor. The only bad thing is class is 2 hours from 8 to 10:10 in the morning every Tues and Thurs, but if you work hard, like I did, you will earn the Eng 114 credit, and it will be worth it.

Also, I believe the department is changing the course number to Eng 52 and 122 beginning this fall.

Great Teacher!

I never really liked English classes before. I always thought they were boring and I hated reading. There is quite a bit of reading to do in this class, however the reading isn't that difficult and it is even sometimes pretty interesting. Professor Deicke is really helpful and is available outside of class if you are having trouble. Prof. Deicke is a great teacher!

Good teacher but discouraging

Ms.Deicke is a good teacher that always has energy which makes the class somewhat exciting. But the only bad thing I do not like about her is her horrible handwriting and the way she sometimes puts down students by discouraging them saying he or she can't do this, when I personally know someone that believes they can do what Ms.Deicke is saying he or she can't.

A Fun and very good teacher

Ms Deicke is a very good teacher!! She really cares about her students. I am in an accelerated English class 49/50. Her class was very fun, even though, theres a lot of homework, its worth it because its for your own good. She gives time to her students. She sometimes gives extra time on the essay if she knows that you need more time. She gives good and straight forward comments on the paper, which makes you to be a better writer

Very good teacher.

When I first step in the class and listened to her lecture. I thought she was one of those teacher that was very hard and @@@###. However, as time went by. I totally change my opinion about her. She is a GREAT TEACHER! (most of the time). The work she demands is very resonable and I learned a lot in her class about writing. Keep up the good work Ms. Deicke.

Professor Deicke is one of the best english teachers that I have ever had. We read interesting stories and have great, interesting, and provocative discussions about them which helps stimulate theses for our papers. She has taught me exactly where my writing was lacking and exactly what I needed to do to help fix it. Of all the english teachers that I've had, Professor Deicke has had the most profound impact on my writing. She conferences with you on a 1-on-1 basis outside of class to help you with any problems that you have and go over your papers with you. She is a tough grader, but as long as you prove your thesis with good supporting evidence, you will get an A on your papers and in the class.

Doreen Deicke is THE teacher to have if you have a problem with writing essays. I've never had a more comprehensive guide to writing essays and to good writing in general. Her teaching style is fun and VERY informative. I took honors english classes all throughout high school but no english class taught me more than Doreen's class. I recommend her strongly if you are planning to take the JEPET. She can teach you how to write amazing, intersting, and comprehensive essays. Doreen Deicke rocks!

Doreen Deicke was a great teacher. Always known as a math, Doreen vastly improved my writing skill. She was always helpful during her office hours and was easy to talk to. She was easy going and was able to get the shy class to participate. Her homework assigments assisted in sentence development for all future writings, not just for her class. Ms. Deicke has a nice, easy going personality, creating a warm atmosphere in her class. She also was nice about allowing students from other sections attend one of her other classes. I strongly recommend Ms. Deicke.

She is one of the better English instructors in this school. I cannot recall any instructor with the energy and the enthusiasm that she has. If you are willing to spend the time to write your essays, you will definitely be in good shape. Besides she is one of those teachers that wants to make you smile whenever she talks. Although I realize that she isn't the easiest instructor in the English department, she is definitely the very best we have in this school.
