Edward Del Val

i hated this class. yeah my writing sucks but i don't think he taught well. he failed me originally and that didn't even make sense since i made out with "B" and "C"s on the assignments, so how could i have failed? so i appraoched him with that, and he changed it? wth? i don't know any teacher who is as hairy as him, nor a male teacher wearing a toe ring and is just dorky weird. obviously, i hated his class and him! it was easy during class since it was mostly all opinions and u just share your opinions in groups, and do sometimes write ups on the readings (your opinion). yhe takes attendance often so u have to go to class and shouldn't be late either.

I felt that this shouldn't have been an english course, instead "Issues of the Human Body 101." There was little emphasis on actually teaching grammar and composition, and what was discussed was remedial at best. I learned what an apositive was in 7th grade, that kind of thing has no place in a college level english course. Moreover, I think Del Val's one of the teachers who uses his classroom to promote his ideals and worldview, rather than help his students develop their own. Rather than reading about bulemia and anorexia, I would've found the class much better if we course material included actual literature. Instead, we got newspaper articles on Thai TV.

If you're interested in body image, eating disorders, disability and gender ambiguity, however, you might very well enjoy this 114 class.

I wasn't extremely impressed with del Val's teaching skills. Although the topics we studied in his class were interesting, I found his class very basic...much of stuff we went over were skills I had learned in high school...over and over again. I don't know if all English 114 classes are like this, but I would look for another English professor before settling with this one. He's not that hard of a grader, but I do have one story to tell. The first essay we did, he told us not to worry about grammar. The class turned in their essays, and when we got them back, I had made two grammatical mistakes throughout the entire essay. He gave me a B. I asked him why, and he said it was because of the two grammatical mistakes. I argued with him (politely, of course), but he still gave me a B on the essay, and explained that he knew I was a strong writer, and would end up with an A at the end of the semester. For the record, he gave me an overall B for the class. I'm not too happy. On the other hand, del Val is a decent guy, and he does care for his students. It's really up in the air whether or not to take this class. A friend of mine enjoyed his class...I may be just bitter about that first essay.

I really enjoyed having Professor Del Val. The material of the course is excellent. His classes aren't the standard read-the-book-and-analyze type. We discussed many controversial issues affecting us today. I've never had a more wonderful English teacher than him. If anyone is looking for a good discussion, this is the class to take.

this guy is really a cool teacher! i swear, he makes u feel comfortable speaking in class. he never makes anyone feel stupid. he has a great personality. his topics for the essays focus on the body: media portrayal, disability, and abortion...very interesting. it's fun!

Ok, im not just saying this because I got a good grade in this class. This guy was great, I highly recommend him. His topics were all interesting, and his discussions/lectures were for the most part all fun and interesting. He has a great personality and he's very open to other people's opinions.
