A Terrible and unflexable teacher

This is the worst math teacher I've ver had. He uses powerpoint to try and spruce up his lectures but it's just like reading from the textbook. He rarley works out problems on the board and when he does he uses roundabout and confusing methods.

His lectures make the simplest algebra problems (like FOIL) overtly complicated. Plus dosen't collect or grade homework. So you have no motivation at all to learn the subject.

He grades on only quizes (once a week) and tests. The Quizzes are really easy and don't give you many points. He creates the tests himself, so the page layout and the way he presents the problems are wacked out. He dosen't leave enough space for work and many of the questions are totally diffrent then the ones found in the book.

Half way through the semester, he asked the class to evaluate his teaching on what they liked and disliked. The whole class requested him to change his teaching method so we could better understand it. (ie. no more powerpoint, write on the board, make tests that match the book, etc.) He resisted and rejected our suggestions then blamed us for our bad test grades.

He also tries to make jokes about "shooting his students" if they fail quizzes, then laughs at his jokes when no one else does.

Good Teacher - Ok class

Elimam is a very good teacher when compared to the rest of SFSU faculty. His explanations are very easy to understand. Slides that he uses are also straight to the point of the class lecture. The drawback of his teaching is that during the Summer BA412 class not all of his lectures would be relevant to the exam. On the day of the exam he would lecture for the first hour on something that will not be on that day's test and then give us 2 hours to do the exam. The next exam he would do the same thing + you had to remember what he had covered during the first hour of th efirst exam. I don't know about you but for me any lectures before the exam especially the ones that are not related to the current material are very distracting. Basically you get your head filled up with useless info. Another aspect of his teaching is that his homework assignments are very disorganized that makes it difficult to follow. I suggest cutting and pasting all of the assignments into Word and breaking it down by the topic. Also pay attention to the homework problems as they will be on the test. Do not atempt to take this class with other classes during Summer. Take it during regular semester and spend your time on homework.

This teacher needs to practice his teaching skills.

Dr. Elimam has a specific flaw. Although he is nice, funny, and very smart, he can never explain anything that will be exactly on the exams. So yeah, he does go over some basic stuff that we will cover, but he doesn't really go into detail on the harder problems, which he puts on his exams. He expects us to do the problems he assigns us on our own and just ask questions about it after we do them. This practice is good only if you are gonna have an exam in very soon, but he makes us do the problems on a specific chapter, moves on to the next chapter, moves on to the next chapter after that, and then gives us the exam. He never reviews any of the stuff we learned in great detail so his class gets all stressed out cramming all the material back into their head, and then fail his tests. His class consisted of two midterms, 5 case studies (4 required, 1 optional), and a final. To advise anyone who is planning to take BA 110 later on, choose another teacher unless Dr. Elimam is the only teacher availiable. I just don't think he is that worth it because he can't explain anything right and on the task.

I highly recommend this Professor!

At first I thought that Professor Elimam was going to a really difficult professor. I think that he really warms up to you if you put a real effort into the class. He expects a lot from his students but he is very straight forward about what he wants and when in order to get a good grade. He makes a point of letting his students know that if they have any questions that they are free to ask without him acting like you are inconviniencing him or anything. I got an A in the class by doing all of the Chapter HW, all of the chapter review problems and taking really good notes. He gives "case projects" about 4 during the semester but they are based on what is being seen in class and he alwasys does a review of the case before it is due. I think that Professor Elimam is one of the best instructors that I have had during my college experience. He is approachable, funny and kind--as long as you don't talk during his lectures that really chaps his hide!!

A crazy and incompetent instructor!

This guy is a crazy head. POOR ENGLISH, UNFUNNY JOKES, more importantly, ridiculuous work loads throughout the enire semester. Exams, assignments, essays, papers and major project are all over the place. If you want to handle 3 or more classes, don't choose this one. It will kill you right there. Besides, you won't learn too much from his lecture. How can you learn from some far-east accent english and unorganized speech?

I really don't think he is qualified for the lecturer. No doubt is this the worst learning experience in SFSU.

Professor Eliman is a Very Nice, koo, humurous, teacher!

I think Eliman is a pretty koo professor. I didn't think i would learn much this semester but i did. Before i had him, i thought he's pretty tough and all but he's actually NOT. I mean, his presonality is great, and he's also a humurous person. Though sometime his class may seem boring and all, but if you really focus on his lectures, you will obsorbs a lot of information. His lectures are well organized and he also knows his materials well.

About homework, exams and projects...well, he does assigns hw but he doesn't collect them though--you basically do the assignments for you own goods but i never do 'em. But surprisingly i still pass all my exams.

About exams, he gives out 3 midterms and a final. His exams aren't difficult at all if you do your hw--understands how to do the problems then it shouldn't be a problem. I, however, only studied the materials from the text book and his lecture notes the night before the exams...but hey, thx goodness i still pass and i don't have a strong math background either. So, that tells you how koo Eliman is. =P BTW, he curves the grades, so you don't have to worry much.

Last but not least, the case studies...through out the semester Professor Eliman assigns 5 case studies. Don't worry, that may seems a lot but they're pretty easy because Eliman would go through each case study with the class, shows you all the steps of how to do the problem of each cases. Each case study is wroth 10 points. 50 points total. BTW, when you write your summmary for the cases, make sure you type 'em up cuz he will give you extra credit for a well organize report. =)

Advises: First, never miss class cuz you will miss a lot of information. I mean A LOT!!! I only missed class twice during the semester and when i came to class the next class meeting, OMG...i was hella lose. So, in order for me to catch up with the class i did myself a favor and read the text book (the sections i missed) and copied the notes from my friend.

Second, go to his tutor hours IF you need help. Eliman really wants his students to learn and pass the course so you have to show some efforts.

Last but not least, don't fall asleep in class cuz he's not gonna let you snooz peacefully...LOL...instead, he's gonna walk around making sure no one sleeps in his class. It may be boring but Eliman's class if full of knowledges and informations you must absorbs in order to pass the course.

Alrighty, that's it about Professor Eliman. I juz wanna tell all you how good this professor is, so go take his class. Don't let other reviewers scared you away. Trust me, Eliman is one of the coolest teacher at SFSU! =)

Available, fair, and yes you have to work hard

Prof Elimam does not give good grades away, but he goes to extreme effort to make it possible for you to do the work necessary to learn the material (the key thing) and, in turn, get the grade you've worked for.

I left each class very confused by the lecture (tough material and this super-smart guy is not the best at explanations) but he's more available (email and in person) than any other prof I've had. It was amazing how available he was. You should take advantage of that if you find the class challenging. He really wants to help you. Do the homework problems, and then do more of them. Exams are tough but you always know what will be on them.

His downsides are that he gets off topic and rambles a lot, so he might skip some things or else cram it in at the end. I don't think he ever made offensive comments (saw that in another review). He also makes typos in the homework and solutions and that was frustrating.

Yes, he has a slight accent, but it's slight. If you have difficulty with it you definitely need more listening practice because in today's world it is necessary to learn to understand many accents other than the one at home in order to be successful in business. Just my .02

I actually think he has a great personality and I'm glad I had him.

Very Knowledgable Professor

Dr Elimam surprised me as a very good teacher. I picked him for BA412 because it was the only section left. I was especially weary the first day after finding out he had an accent. ( the previous semester I had the privilage of attending a class which the instructor's accent (Valenzuela) sounded like a duck and made it extremely painful to go to class who by the way had no knowledge of the material she taught) Dr. Elimam's material was taught in a manner that was easy to understand and follow. It was useful, and he is very much overqualified to teach at State, where I have only found a few teachers that are of that caliber.

A Few Good Teacher Left

Dr Elimam is an excellent teacher. This professor shows dedication and effort. A MUST take teacher. If you do his sample questions and study the notes on his web-sites, you will pass and gain a good grade. His classes are interesting and full of hints. All you have to do is email him and you will be guaranteed a reply within 24 hours. I will take this Prof. class all over again if I have to. The project that he assigns, he goes over them to make sure that we get them right. I was a little lost and he gave me permission to attend additional classes. I will take his class again if I had to but luckily, the hours I put in paid off. Elimam makes you work for your grade. He will not spoon feed you but all you have to do is do everything he tells you to...and that involves a lot of hours doing the questions that he sets but it will pay off. And if you don't understand them, email him or give him a visit during his office hours. Excellent teacher...God Bless him.

Not recommended if......

Not a professor to take if you are the type who isn't strong in math. The guy likes to give a homework but he doesn't go over it in class. And even if he did go over the homework, he would intimidate students, making them feel dumb, as a consequence, many student do not ask question on homework because he doesn't have the patients to go over them. Secondly, when he lectures, he likes to wonder off and talk about his "life accomplishment" and how "smart" his daughter is. I mean, give me a break, no one in the class wants to hear about your life stories and how "smart" you daughter is. He also grades pretty hard. Just to wrap up, if you aren't the type that can study by yourself, no bother taking his class.

Goes off topic!!!

There's no doubt that Prof. Elimam is very smart. He certainly knows the subject well, and his lectures are very interesting. My main complaint, however, is that he spends most of the class time telling stories that are irrelevant to the subject. He would often rush through the important parts in the last 15 minutes of class. BA 412 is a tough subject. Be prepared to work extremely hard regardless of who your professor is. Elimam just didn't fit my style. Despite spending so many hours reading and doing homework, I still had trouble understanding the concepts. This is partly due to Elimam's inability to stay on topic during lectures. Don't be scared off by my review, because you might find that your style of learning is compatible to his style of teaching.

Not bad if you study hard enough

In fact, he is not a bad teacher, he can explain thing very well. However, the worst thing is he seems doesn't know how to distribute the time on the material. No matter the concept is easy or tough, he spends the SAME time to explain it. Especailly at the end of the semester, he can finish a chapter in one week!!! So, you may have to use much time to study by yourslef.

Overall, he's not bad to take if you would like to do the homework and will spend time to understand it, coz the test that he gives is much more easy than the homework, that means if you understand the homework, the test will be a piece of cake to you.

AN OKAY TEACHER

PROF. ELIMAM IS NOT A BAD TEACHER AT ALL. IF YOU WANT TO GET A DECENT GRADE OUT OF HIS COURSE, YOU MAINLY HAVE TO ATTEND CLASS TO UNDERSTAND HIS LECTURES AND TO DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS ASSIGNED TO GET A FEEL OF HIS EXAM QUESTIONS. IF HE'S NOT AVAILABLE DURING OFFICE HOURS, YOU CAN ALWAYS REACH HIM BY E-MAIL. YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEND HIM YOUR FINISHED HOMEWORK/PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR REVIEW AND HE'LL LET YOU KNOW IF THERE'S A PROB WITH IT. THE ONLY THING IS THAT HE DOES NOT FINISH HALF OF WHAT HE HAS SCHEDULED ON HIS SYLLABUS, SO YOU ACTUALLY LEARN LESS THAN INTENDED.

You won't get anything out of this class

Many students in this BA 412 class taught by Elimam suffer through the whole semester. I have many classmates who regret taking this professor for BA 412. Yes he may give a lot of homework to help you with the study, but he NEVER reviews it in class therefore you are literally trying to hang on to this class with a passing grade on your own. He is such a horrible teacher that rambles continuously about his stupid life accomplishments. As a student, i care less about his past and want to learn something out of his lecture besides his boring stories. Trust me, if you take this teacher, you will learn nothing from him as he tries to push you to review all the material on your own. He doesn't even review the test with his students. I understand that this class is hard and that it is the teacher's responsibility to help the student to better understand his material, but Elimam fails to assist in every way.

I enjoyed this class and learned a tremendous amount. This professor is very dedicated to students and is available to assist students more than any other professor I have ever had. While his lectures are very organized he tends to run through alot of material very quickly so it is important to come to class prepared. There is alot of homework! He gives students every chance to succeed, you just need to put the effort into it. I highly recommend this professor.

I'm taking Prof. Elimam this semester. So far his teaching method is fine with me. I just wanted to give a little advice to my fellow students. If you give a teacher a bad review for whatever reason, make sure to write your comments on a college level. How can we take your comments about a professor seriously if you write like you just finished the third grade?

I took Elimam last year in the fall of 97 and wow! What a roller coaster ride that was! He is extemely charismatic and proffesional. For the kind of material he does try to liven up the material with his humor. There were 3 test and several assignments that added points to the test. The test get progressively difficult and their is were I have a problem with his teaching methods. He fell behind on some of the material and he just started piling on so many concepts with little explanation. The final was also very difficult due to the amount of material. He knows his stuff and he does make himself available after class hours.

I was surprised to see a negative review; so, I had to add my thoughts. He teaches; unlike others who lecture in monotone while showing slides of the text's pages. He answers e-mail questions, and e-mails out sample problems before the tests. His "I'll shoot you" is a joke delivered as a joke, and no one misunderstands this unless they want to. He cares whether the slowest student gets the concepts, and works hard to teach in an interesting manner. I really liked his course a lot more than I anticipated I would.

I just have to add my enthusiastic support of Dr. Elimam! He is extreamly qualified and really knows his stuff. He trully wants his students to suceed. As for grading it is easy to do well in his class, but....you have to actually go. He works mostly (if not compleatly) from his own information. So in other words you can't read the book right before the test and expect to do well. There are homework assignments, 3, but they are easy as long as you do them while he explains them. One more important note, he sends out sample problems right before the test via e-mail they are almost exactly like the test. Very Helpfull!

While I have been horrified by the low caliber of many of the professors at SFSU, particularly in the Business Department, Dr. Elimam is the most outstanding teacher I have ever had at SFSU or anywhere else!! He is professional to the utmost, extremely helpful to individual students during office hours, and makes the requirements very clear to everyone if they happen to go to class. I highly recommend this teacher if you actually want to learn something and enjoy the class time you sacrifice to pass the course. You won't be disappointed at all. Honestly, I don't know why he even sticks around at SFSU, if you happen to see his resume, you'll see what I mean. He is "way" overqualified by SFSU standards. I just thank GOD that there are some good ones like him at this school.
