On a personal level, she is okay, but.......
The way Professor Eng lectured seems like it is too simple to understand. As one reviewer states, 'she is all over the place'. Another reviewer points out that lectures are hard for students to take notes. These two statements are, in fact, true. I remember I got lost after her lectures, and so are my classmates. I think she is competitent in her field, but she is unable to pinpoint where we questions are, if we ever got lost.
What made me upset the most are the comments she made about our textbooks. The hardcover text is clearly unreadable that is written by mathematicians and the soft cover text is better, but not much better. Seriously, she told our class the reason the decision science department purchased these textbooks is 'they are the cheapest one.' This gives me the impression that the department does not care much about what we learn.
To do well in this class, you must re-write your lecture notes and form a study group early. This will help you tremendously. If you have specific questions about any part of her lecture, email her - she responds to them promply. That would be the best way to reach her. So, using the hardcover text is pretty much useless to study for her exams because her lectures do not match them.
Although I got a very good grade, I would not recommend her to anyone; however, she is the only professor teaching this course in the fall semester.

Took this class in Fall 2003 and Im so glad I took this class before taking DS604-Forecasting. It greatly helped me understand regressions (linear and multiple), different hypothesis tests. This woman deserves my good review. She is very patient and still smiles even if shes been repeating the same topic over and over. Believe me this repetitiveness is to your benefit. Her teaching style is to make you think and apply the concept. She does provide some formula/equation but its accompanied by why, when, and where to use the equation. If you dont understand this part, you might end up using the wrong equation.
I was totally lost in the beginning of the class. I thought Id have a hard time getting by. This class is composed of 2 exams (20% each), individual project (30%), and a final exam (30%). She will give you pointers to study for the exam and there are no trick questions. Exams are open book and open notes. Whatever pointers she provides, it WILL BE on the test. The 1st exam was a challenge for me and I got 68% (yes, 2% short of C-) but I fought back in the 2nd exam by getting 96% (missed 2 points to get 100%). How did I do it? Her lectures before the 2nd exam were about multiple regressions and tests of hypotheses (and lots of them). She taught and taught, repeated and repeated. The individual project was at first intimidating and overwhelming but this is because of the data she required. Once you found your data and she approves of it, youre ready writing your paper. She will actually tell you what exactly she wants to see in your paper. Shell go over the data manipulation in class, step-by-step. Shell tell you what to do with your data on a computer application like Minitab or Excel. Also, shell show you how to arrive at a conclusion using regression analysis by doing testing of hypothesis. This part will greatly help you on your 2nd Exam AND your Final Exam.
I cannot emphasize enough that it is important you attend her every class and write notes. Youll be relying on your notes a lot during exams. She doesnt have handouts because she likes writing on the board and youll understand why. I would say that the project takes awfully a lot of time (digging for data is the most time consuming, then writing the paper), but youll learn in the process. If you do your paper, you should be alright in your exams.

#1 Statistics is a very confusing subject with tons of step. This subject requires a lot of practice and memorizing. Ms. Eng really put in effort to explain the subject so that everyone of the students understands the whole concept. She really looks around and tries to read everyone expression to see if they understand the subject, if not, shell repeatedly go over it. If you still did not understand the question, she was ALWAYS there everyday for an extra 10 minutes after class for students to ask questions. To really understand the subject and pass the class, you must complete the hw, which is not required to be turn in. If you don't attempt to do or practice the hw problems, you only have yourself to blame for. Only two finals are given in a semester and there was extra credit problems that could've raised your grade more than 20%. Overall, I would say she's one of the better teachers at state.

There's no question that Professor Eng is competent in her field, but I didn't find her a very good teacher.
She's an animated and interesting lecturer, and she makes the material sound very simple. Unfortunately, she's also pretty scattered, jumping from one thing to another. Her lectures were fun to watch but hard to take notes for. As several people put it, she was "all over the place."
Making matters worse, the book she assigned (and will probably continue assigning) was clearly written by mathematicians trying to impress other mathematicians. It was downright unreadable. So when you went home and tried to make sense out of your hastily scrawled notes by going over the book, you just couldn't do it. It was very hard to connect her lectures to the text, and this was also a widespread complaint.
I also didn't find her very helpful during her office hours. It's not that she wasn't cordial; she is cordial but doesn't seem to have the ability to ask you diagnostic questions to figure out what you're not getting. Basically, if you ask a specific question, she gives you a specific answer, but if you're lost enough that you don't know what to ask, she's not any help.
Also, she only has one free chair in her office, so you sit while she stands over you. This is very intimidating and gets you out of there real quick.
This is not to say that she's mean or anything like that. Quite the contrary. On a personal level, I think she's a sweet person. And I think she could tell most of us were not getting it because she was generous with pre-test reviews.

I can't believe the other two reviews. This teacher is horrible. First of all, and I might add, 90% of the class agrees with me, I spoke with most of them...she does not explain things very well at all. She moves extremely fast..and doesnt seem to care if you understand it or not, although she does ask...though it all seems to much of like a job for her....get in and out as quick as possible...and for her office hours, she wont even take a seat to help you out, and is more concerned with surfing that darn internet than helping you, really sad. WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD, NO JOKE!!!! Its not wonder the drop rate in her class is so HIGH!!

Professor Eng is a really smart woman. She carries herself extremely well. Her lectures are clear and she makes sure that everyone understands it before she moves on to another subject. She makes her exams open book and open notes, which helps alot. The material is pretty hard, but she makes it fun and interesting to learn. When you ask her to help you, she is sincere and guides you through everything you don't understand. I often go to her if I don't understand things from my other BA classes. She's willing to help you in any way, and she is very pleasant. Great teacher! No wonder she's the dept. chair! If we had more teachers like her at SFSU, the BACS dept wouldn't suck so bad!
