What do Celtic people have in common? She can tell you, and then some.

When I attended the 50th International Summer School at University College, Dublin, I heard lectures on Celtic history and culture given by some of the top scholars in the field. Laurie Fadave's course was most definitely on a par with those lectures, or even better, in its breadth and depth. Perhaps her course should also be cross-listed with the anthropology department. I also greatly enjoyed her teaching style. Thank you Ms. Fadave, for one of the best courses I've ever had.

A good teacher

There is no doubt that Laurie Fadave knows what she is talking about. Sometimes her lectures were a little unorganized. When at the board, she is somewhat scrambled as well. Taking in the ground work perhaps was a little more difficult/time consuming. Some students knew the history prior to...,but those of us who did not had a lot of work to do just to get up to speed. She gave one brilliant lecture. The others were good to adequate. She is easy to give an A or B, but as you go down the scale it becomes more difficult to rejuvinate to a higher grade. I felt there was something amiss with her grading system; however, she offers a worthwhile opportunity to process regardless of outcome. Office hours were not precise. After waiting for fifteen minutes, I gave up. (Maybe that was 'just one of those days'?) All in all I did enjoy this class. Thank you Laurie Fadave.

Laurie Fadave is extraordinary. Celtic mythology has great potential to be completely impenetrable and tedious, but she makes it come alive. She goes over the readings closely, illuminating one part at a time until the whole becomes clear. She plays music for us, jokes around and in general creates one of the most humorous, friendly and edifying classroom environments I've ever experienced. She told us at the first class that this course would change the way we think, and it's true. I would take any class she taught.

What a wonderful teacher Laurie Fadave is! She is enthusiastic about what she teaches and she creates a friendly atmosphere in her classroom. I had had a mythology course in high school, but taking in again in her class has helped me to appreciate it more. I didn't leave the class feeling as if I hadn't learned anything. She asks her students to have a myth journal in which one writes mythical themes and/ or images one has seen outside, read in a book, heard in a song etc.... She allows you to relate what you read in the mythology book to what goes on in our society. She goes over the stories we read in detail, not like many professors who assign readings and never mention the material in class. There is some group work where we discuss some myths and the best part was when each group made up a myth and presented it to the class. Because of L. Fadave, I will be taking other classes that deal with the same material as this class had.

Prof. Fadave is one of the most considerate and helpful professors I have had at this University. She possesses a genuine interest in her students and truly wishes for them to learn something in her class. Her breadth of knowledge is vast, and coupled with a refreshing (for professors) lack of arrogance it serves to enrich your learning experience.

The class itself is very interesting and she brings in many entertaining side notes, i.e. using Stars Wars to help students understand mythology. The workload is average (a journal and a few tests -- including midterm), and usually not too hard (if you attend class regularly).

I highly recommend her to anyone who is serious about a good education.
