Smart guy, not the best at teaching

He is a very smart guy and knows his stuff but I had a hard time understanding the material with how he taught it. This was the first time that he had taught a class that was half students and half teachers from schools in the SF area. I think that made it hard for him to fulfill both of us. I had to go to the math lab twice a week just to understand the material and to understand the homework assignments. His leactures could of explained the material better.I had a very hard time in the class.

You'll do well if you are prepared to work at it

Dr. Fendel's teaching method is not for every student. He sometimes will breeze past material that he finds is easy while the rest of the class is still scratching their heads. To be fair the class we had is mixed with High School Math teachers who want to get Calculus under their belt, and according to him he won't have a mixed classroom again. Overall if you are prepared to work hard at the homeworks you should do all right. Homework counts towards 50% of your grade and you can drop the lowest two. The midterm and final make up the remaining 50% of your grade.

Fendel really cares about his student understanding calculus. His assignments are really light and test easy -- all if you study. He teach only ideas and very little mechanics, which I found very fustrating at the beginning. I have never been in a math class taught this way. By the end of the semester I could see how effective his method was and left the class appreciating him as an instructor. He gives graded homework assignments for every class meeting, never more than 10 problems -- 4 exams (including comprehensive final). The handed in homework grade is 50% of your final grade.

Dr. Fendel is an outstanding professor. He makes Math fun!! I don't know of too many math teachers that can do that. Homework is worth half of your final grade. He assings about ten to twelve problems per homework assignment and if you do them all and ask questions in class you are all set for the mid-terms. He also gives the solutions to the homework assingments after you turn your homewok in. He gives three mid-terms and a comprehensive final. He tries very hard to get the students in his class involved and will take the time to explain things. If he feels that the class is having a hard time on a particular section or concept he will devote the entiree lecture period to make sure everyone understands what is going on. If he feels that he has not covered enough of one section he will postpone the homework. He generated a list of the students email addresses in class and will keep out posted on homework assignments, etc.
