Good class

Fieldmans class is cool. She teaches you the differnt Ir perspectives and she is a little 1 sided at times but nothing to get worked up about. There is 1 mid term a final and a paper at the end which is 8pgs single space so its really long. The tests are all written. You go in for 2hrs and write. I had opposing views than she did and supported my views in my paper and on tests and still pulled an A so the theory that she grades according to what she belives in goes right out the window. Its a good class...take it if you dont mind all the writing.

BIASED UNRECONSTRUCTED MARXIST...BEWARE

If you want to pass this class you better spit back her opinions exactly in your papers and exams. All she accepts is her own idealogy...MARXISM. The entire semester and class revolves around her beliefs and do not try to debate her because she will not listen to it and if you do so in your papers or test you will be failed. She is extremely close-minded and fills her class with marxist propaganda. If you expect to learn anything about how the world really works of the benefits of capitalism YOU WON'T. She is knowledgable to a point, however she is NOT an economist and it is obvious at many times. She is biased, i cant say that enough. She will talk for two hours about how horrible the U.S. is but fails to explain that this is one of the few places she can live and have the liberty to hate the government so publicly and acutally lecture about all the negatives without mention to any positive aspects to American culture, beliefs, policies, or to be blunt capitalism. It is just really hard to learn anything in her class. All you end up learning is her opinion of what world politics and economics SHOULD BE

welcome to the gulag!

If you have to take a class from Fieldman, heres what you need to know:

1. She is what Lenin referred to as a useful idiot. Useful idiots are Western intellectuals who exercise their right to free speech in order to praise governments where there is no freedom of speech.

2. Progressives is a named adopted by Western Communists in order to distance themselves from the Stalinist regime. Nice Communists dont like to talk about Stalin.

3. She knows absolutely nothing about people from Third World countries. She does not care about people from Third World countries, except as a stick to beat the U.S. with.

4. Ditto for the environment. She is so indifferent to environmental problems, she doesn't even bother to mention the terrible damage to the environment being done in the former Soviet Union and in China.

5. The only thing this woman is in love with is the spectacle of her own self-righteousness.

6. Fieldman's class is a Marxist tent revival. Watch a TV evangelist sometime and you will realize that's exactly what she is. Just substitute the words "United States" for "Satan" and "capitalist" for "sinner."

Consider this

Glenn knows her subject matter very well. This class will confirm any other environmental classes you are taking, because she goes at her class from politico-econo-historical-environmental angle. However, my criticisms of her class are: Her entire class period is dedicated to lecturing. That is, it'd be better if the class included discussions among students. She assigns about 5 books, which aren't that expensive ( I read only one of them, but plan to read others on my leisure time). It's important that you attend class and take good notes!-you can do well on her exams if you just study your notes and skim relevant parts in the books that she asks to read for the midterm and a final. Class has one midterm, one term paper and a final. I don't like her vibe, though. She is very tense in her energy. Not a very warm personality-she has this tendency to bore her eyes into you and her stare is very aggressive and challenging. At times, it feels as if she is spewing forth her personal propaganda, but she is, also, as I said, very knowledgable. You will learn from her, hopefully, it's just she does not have that earthy spiritual warm energy that I've found in my good teachers at CCSF. She is respectable when you voice your opinion, but tends to think, judging by her body language and by other non-verbal communication, that she does, in a way, prefer her opinion above others. So, take her, you will learn stuff. I am usually very vocal in classes-I wasn't this semester due to psychological adjustment period. But, I strongly recommend voicing your opinion and challenging her. This is so, because there were a number of people in our class who had a positive bias toward her-they have had taken several of her classes. She has her flock of followers. So, challenge her and take notes and you will do well!

Become a Progressive

Do not expect to come out of that class anything but Progressive. It is quite hard to argue with her facts - be they true or not. However, the class was an eye-opener, especially after being educated about mainstream political theories. Do not buy the history book - ain't gonna read that. Also little was told about the actual history of US FP. A lot was told about what US FP should be. If you make an outline of her lectures - just copy it into the blue book on the exam, and you got yourself an A.

Glenn's cool, stop trippin'

I had no problem with Prof Fieldman expressing her left-wing views because I'm on the same side. But, I can see how one who sees things differently would grow tired of the very left-oriented class topics. It seems as though most people in my class agree with Glenn on her stances though, as many of the students are ENVS majors. I find that Glenn Fieldman explains things very well in lectures and asks pretty straight forward questions on the essay tests. As for students regurgitating info back to her, isn't that kinda what that whole teacher/student thing is about? The teacher teaches, the student learns... the info is passed from teacher to student and then the student is tested on that info, at which time the student explains the info back to the teacher to show he/she has learned it... Glenn's cool- she's laid back, she gives a break in long classes, she's knowledgeable, and she's nice.

Be careful not to get brainwashed!!!!

Like many of the other reviews stated, Ms. Fieldmann is extremely biased. Although I found the IPE class interesting, it's content was filled with left-wing ideals from top to bottom. Unless you are an unreconstructed Marxist, you will find this class to be lop-sided -- anything but objective.

But, don't worry, because it is an easy A. I really never did any of the readings. Her tests are based on her lectures, which you should attend regularly and take good notes for. As said before, just spit back the same opinions you hear in class.

The papers you must write are only about 4 pages, and if you gear them to what she likes to hear, support your statements, and can write well, then you should get an A.

I hate left-wing ideology, so at times it was hard to sit through the class w/o shouting, so I stayed quiet like a good little soldier. Hats off to the guy in my class who continued to challenge her repetative, blantent anti-American/pro-3rd World lessons. She bashed you constantly, but you didn't back down. I respect and admire you. I don't know your name, but if you are reading this, you know who you are!

VERY CLOSED MINDED!

Words do not describe how close minded Professor Fieldman is. If you have any interest in learning about any opinions outside of hers, take another class. On most things I agreed with Professor Fieldman's views, but when I proposed a question about the other side's opinion, she cut me off and went back to teaching. She does promote discussion, but only with select students. Other than that her class was relativly easy, but make sure you pay attention to what her view points are because that is what you are tested on. And if you cannot spit it back exactly as she said it, she will mark it wrong, without any explanation. And I have talked with other people in the class and they all felt the same way. In fact, several thought we should complain.

Try an alternative teacher for this class

Pro. Fieldman is very bias and even more so, closed minded. Sometimes she reminded me of a horse with blinders. Even though she is a very educated woman, she simply does not possess the ability to look at things differently. God forbid you defend liberalism, she will embaress you in front of the whole class. The course was interesting but she covered the same topics every single week. I took a vivid part in the discussions however most of my classmates slept through the class. She requires a paper of a minimum 8 single spaced pages. I recomend that you go much further than that and bust out at least 20 single ones. She will love that. I can honestly say that I learned a lot but may be it was because she repeated it so many times.

Interesting Class

A very interest class, especially with the presidential election happening during the semester. Dr. Fieldman gives 2 tests and a final. We had two 4 page papers due, one at mid-term and on the last day of class. There are also 4 mid-size books to read (used in writing the papers). I think the key to passing her class is to participate in the class discussions and pay attention to what her point of view is on the lecture materials. If structure is what you need to pass a class then this isn't for you. Dr. Fieldman has a general idea of what she wants to lecture on, but is very flexible depending on the class discussions.

interesting

Dr. Fieldman is very liberal, but gives a pretty fair sides. You must know a little about Poli Sci to really get into class discussions. She really encourages discussion. She has 2 tests and she prepares you with study guides. she has 2 ten page papers. They were interesting, though. Note--i kept up with all the reading, but we fell behind in class material and she only tested us on what we covered.

Marxist Schmarxist!!!

Fieldman does not really encourage thinking. Basically you just have to regurgiate what she wants to hear: and that is anything that resembles marxism. She is not open to any other opinions. Don't challenge her because she'll make sure that she has the last word. I would not recommend her unless you are very left-leaning and you just want to sit there and her someone say the views you already believe in. Moreover, she is a revisionist. Revisionism went out of fashion in the 1960s. it's equivelent to greating someone and saying "peace, man."

At first I found Dr. Fieldman to be and interesting lecturer. However, after the 10th or so week of droning on about the same material that was covered in the first week I became suspisious of just how prepared she was to teach this never before offered class. She required 2 papers a project and a final, of which very lightly covered 2 of the FIVE books required for this class. Giving her the benifit of the doubt, this was her first time teaching it. Although her knowlege of the environmental movement is great in the area of politics and sociology, she is lacking in any of the hard science, and therefore chooses to omit it all together. If you take her class, dont worry about turning anything in when it is due, she will give the same grade regardless of when or what fashion work is delivered to her, as long as you feed her back her Marxest pose.

This class is very informative and you learn a lot. Prof. Fieldman is open minded and knows her subject matter, yet respects you opinions if they differ from her's. In the class, you have to write a 10 page paper and take 2 essay exams . If you pay attention in class and do some or most of the reading you will do o.k. I would recommend taking her class if you have the chance.

Glenn Fieldman is a great professor! Anyone who wants to take a class to better understand U.S. Foreign Policy should enroll! She really makes you think from all different perspectives! You will learn a lot from her. She only gives two exams (essay) and a paper. She is very fair and doesn't mind if you take another point of view, as long as you don't give her a lot of ###. If you insist that view is the right view on a subject matter, you're in for a rude awakening! I really enjoyed her class and would definitely take another class from her in the future. She is one of the FEW teachers who even care at this school!!!!!
