Reading the other reviews, I can see that the basics have been covered (take lots of notes, etc) I just wanted to say what a remarkable man Foster is. He seriously has been all over the world. I will never forget seeing this simple, clean cut midwestern looking, older man nonchalantly saying things like " the other day when I was in (some random remote part), China.." on the first day of class. He hardly fits the image of a worldly globetrotter. He told stories throughout the course of his travels to everywhere from the (real) tallest mountain in (i think Peru or Uraguay or something) to being in the gobi desert or some other remote location. On one of the Geography pin boards in hss, there is a picture of him looking like a provincial midwestern, fresh from a trip to the local barbarshop, standing in front of a wall full of exotic treasures like masks and spears from all over the world. Pay attention to this man as he is full of untapped knowledge-- he is the teacher that made me fully realize my fascination with geography and want to commit to that major.

He's a cool teacher. There were 3 exams and each based on the lectures he gives. There is no homework. The only disadvanatge to his exams is he does not provide a study sheet so, you basically have to review about three and half weeks worth of notes and be able to apply what you know to the questions.

Prof. Foster is a very nice man. You must attend lectures in order to pass the class, you must attend every lecture and take good notes, to get an A in the class-BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THE BOOK!!!! To me it is worth it to attetnd every class and not have to read the text book. He has lot's of experience in traveling the world and is knowledgable about many areas of the world. He likes to share his experinces and sometimes gets off track telling us these stories. I personally, enjoy them, but I know some people don't care. Overall it is an interesting and easy class as long as you attend regularly and take good notes.

Prof. Foster is a good teacher. His class is based on only lectures. No student participation is really required. However, if students have questions, he is willing to stay after class to answer them. His lectures are very interesting. We learned about different countries, cultures, and lifestyles. His lectures are far more detailed than the book, so he doesn't even require you to purchase it. All you need to do to prepare for his exams is to listen to his lectures and take really good notes. Your notes are what's going to determine your grade, because this is what you need to study for the midterms. Therefore, don't plan on missing class. Foster gives 3 exams throughout the semester, which is comprised of multiple choice, fill in, matching, and 1 short answer question. It's very easy to get an A as long as you show up to class everyday and TAKE GOOD NOTES! I cannot stress that enough. Over all, Prof. Foster is an excellent teacher. I recommend him to everyone.

Dr. Foster is an excellent teacher with probably the greatest amount of knowledge on the subject at hand than anyone else in the department. not to mention he has the most hands-on experience since he's been to something like 50million places around the world. in order to get a good grade: TRUST ME!-- take notes on EVERYTHING, and it's not a whole whole lot. also, don't even bother with the book much at all. everything comes from the lectures. i found his lectures interesting, but i can see how some people think he's boring cuz he's very monotone and he talks really low. SPEAK UP!!!!!!! anywayz- i recommend him highly and just pay attention cuz you could learn a lot from this class that's just plain old interesting stuff.

His class is boring and theres a lot for you to memorize..He test are tricky sometimes.. However, he is a great guy and seems to know the class very good. I like him a lot because he prepares you for the test. As long as you take good notes and listen carefully you will definitely get and A. Most of the time, he writes words on the board that will definetly will beon the exam.. I would recomend him.. He is also seems to be a nice guy

this teacher is pretty, all you need to do is pay attention in class bcuz he just lectures and lectures. no homework except one or two short reports. his lectures are not too boring so paying attention is not too hard. i think he repeats himself and the material quite often so you'll remember what he says.

this guys was just a kewl teacher. lotsa vocabulary, but the class is a good learning experience. all you gotta do is come to class, and he teaches.
he always had interesting stories about his life, and it makes the class pretty fun when you're just sitting there listening.
the text really isn't necessary, just go to class, sit back, and listen. it's one of those rare classes. it's but you still learn a lot.

You have to attend this class on a regular basis whether he takes attendance or not unless you know someone who is a good notetaker. You really have to concentrate in his class and take notes almost every second. He goes on and on without writing much on the board, so you have to keep up yourself and can't be daydreaming all the time. Otherwise his exams will be really hard for you. But other than that, he's a pretty fair teacher and you can learn a lot in his class. And he has a sense of humor sometimes.

Vocabulary, vocabulary, vocabulary. I can not stress the importance of knowing vocabulary for this teacher and class. The teacher does a great job in explaining each term, but there are just too many. Also, the teacher does keep attendance, so if you miss too many days, your grade will suffer. Getting back to vocabulary, for the final, our class had to know about 200-300 words, which is way too much for me. Some people are good at memorizing, but there is a point where too many words is impossible. As a result, this class was the lowest grade I got during my time at SFSU. There are two midterms and a final. All of which consist of multiple choice, matching, defining. If you're good at memorizing, take this teacher and this class, otherwise stay away.
