He made Cost Accounting very fun

Franz is a great teacher because he goes over HW problems and answers questions. He strives to make Acctg students more competent with their abilities. The only problem with him is that he supports the book publishers (that are making custom editions and charging high textbook prices) and he makes fun of students that take Acct 302 and 305 at the same time when he doesn't consider that students sometimes are forced to take these 2 classes. There's 3 exams(20 MC, 1-2 problems) but it's challenging to get an A in his class since Franz doesn't curve & missing 1 MC question drops 3-4% of the exam grade. He also creates new exam versions for each section in order to prevent cheating. Thus, you should study hard in his class but he's a great teacher that makes the subject very fun.

Highly recommended

One of the best instructors for Accounting 101. He takes a very dry subject and makes it interesting including current events like the CA budget crisis and what it means to SFSU students. He's very clear about his expectations and what it takes to do well in his class. The outlines are available on his website so if you do the homework (before the class is best so you can get clarification if needed) and study for the exams, you'll develop a good understanding of the subject. He also is very available during office hours to claify any questions you may have. Don't expect to skip classes or worse yet sleep through them and do well.

Great Teacher

Professor Franz has high expectations, he actually expects us to do work ahead of time to be prepared to discuss the topic and problems we encountered. But this is actually COLLEGE! What did you expect! Personally, my object is to learn the topic so that I can get the best accounting position possible and Professor Franz teaches in such a way that you really learn the topic. He explains the topic very well after you already tried on your own and found out areas thjat are confusing. That makes everything really register. So, if you are trying to learn the topic, use that information to get a good job, then he is the best choice for 305. If your objective is to skate by, get a good grade, and try to get the easiest teacher available --then take someone else. However, there are easy teachers but you don't learn ANYTHING! Check the other reviews of what people go through.

I think he Sucked

Prod. Franz did not teach anything relevant in class to help us with the tests. He wanted us to do the homeworks before class and then if we had questions to ask them inclass. Isnt it supposed to be the other way around. Maybe teach what were supposed to know, go over an example or two then ask us to do the homework. The grading was 33% for each test and no extras. He constantly put us down for not having high enough test scores and he said if we didnt have A's we would NOT get jobs anywhere. what the hell is that?? He sucks big time and doesnt know how to talk to his students with respect.

Very Straight Forward

I read the other reviews and decided to take Franz, and thank God!!!

Just like everyone said:

3 exams with 30 multiple choice questions, some of which come right from his sample questions handouts.

He lectures right from overheads which summarize everything you need to know from the chapter. This can be a little monotonous, but it is accounting afterall. If you are not really interested in accounting or business, then this will probably bore you. However, he does give clear examples at each step of the way, and will field any questions relating material to the "real world." His lecture notes are now available on the web, along with powerpoints, which is killer if you miss a class (no bumming notes off of the moron next to you).

There are no homework problems to turn in, although he does assign a few and then covers them during the lectures, which are the only types of problems that you will be expected to be able do on the exam.

There is really no excuse to not get an A in this class. Everything you have to know is made very clear and straightforward.

Great teacher

Dr. Franz uses slides in all his lectures for this class. Fortunately, unlike most teachers who use slides, he's a good speaker, and his slides summarize the text very well. He stops for questions, and is very patient. He never seems hurried, and frequently has time for jokes and little discussions of sports and politics.

There are three tests, each 30 multiple choice questions, and each worth a third of the grade. You need about 85% to get an A, about 75% to get a B, about 65% to get a C, etc. etc.

The tests are challenging enough. Fully half of my class flunked the first test. To succeed in this class, you need to study at least enough to do the homework problems. The homework problems prepare you for the exams.

It's Cool To Have His Class Once A Week...

Not the easiest teacher, nor the hardest. But easily passable if you study his notes. What upsets me the most about his class is too much notes from his transparency (I know, I spelled that wrong). If you can bring your labtop and type up your notes, then no problem at all...otherwise prepare to write 4-5 pages of notes for each chapter. Another nagging thing is the transparency notes are so damn small (at times I have to move up and squint my damn eyes to see those beetee numbers). Something positive? He does provide sample questions at the end of each chapter, which SOME appear on the actual exams. How cool is that? As for exams (in multiple choice), 3 in all and no final. Sounds easy, but if you screw up on one of those exams, you may have to consider dropping/withdrawing. Just pay attention and understand the math stuff. You'll do fine.

An Excellent Teacher

Instructor is enthuiastic about his topic and he draws your interest in by his great speaking style. His lectures make the difficult text earier to understand. He cares about how you are doing in his course. Tests are very fair. Sometimes he can be a bit cranky and you have to learn not to take it personally.

Great professor!

Professor Franz is an exceptional teacher. He outlines his lectures very well and gives out helpful test questions before each exam. He's not exactly the most interesting teacher out there, but I liked his class a lot. He's got a friendly personality and is always happy to field questions. I wish he'd teach more accounting classes since I'd gladly take him for another course. I loved his non-threatening and easy to follow teaching style.

this form sucks

I wasn't in the class long enough to take a test, but this guy puts his notes on the projector and reads off it word for word. He adds a little bit of lecture to it. But he may as well hand out those notes for the whole semester so we can just show up for the exam.

He is very good.. He gives you hand out on everything thaat you will need for the exams... As long as you pay atttention and take good notes... you will get an A on his class. He also helps you out by having office hours..

I also like Dr. Franz because he tries to make you laugh and as much as possible help you out to pass this class.. I would recommend for everybody majoring in Business Course to take Dr. Franz.. Thats if.. you want to pass Acct101

I was dreading this class, but this instructor has made it bearable for me. His lectures follow the text, and at the end of every chapter he gives sample exam questions so you can gauge how you are doing in the class. Note - these sample questions have a habit of appearing on the actual exams! Homework is assigned, but not collected, and he goes over the problems in class. The text is very dry and I often zone out while reading, yet Franz always highlights the important points in class and goes over everything you will ever come across in one of his exams. Three exams total, all multiple choice, but don't read that as "easy;" in this class you will have to work for a good grade. A very good teacher - I would highly recommend him for this course.
