Prof Germany is a very kind hearted and polite gentleman. One very wonderful thing about his personality is that eventhough he is a very knowledgeable old man, he is still willing to learn from his students. Take notes, listen carefully then you will do well in the exams. Exams are not hard at all. Just that you need to have a very complete set of notes to study before the exam, so attending class and take a good set of notes are very very very important!! I would say this class is relatively easier than other history classes that I had before.

Professor Germany is great. I've taken two classes with him already and they basically have the same strucuture. He lectures all the way through the class and all you have to do is sit there, listen, and take notes. You don't really need the book because his lectures are good enough. Your grade is based on 3- 50 mutliple choice question tests and a 5 page term paper based on a book. Professor Germany is a great person and the class is easy if you take good notes and study them.

When I first took the class Prof. Germany came off as a strict looking man who would deliver boring lectures. Boy, was I wrong. Prof. Germany delivered excellent lectures and really knows his stuff. The book wasn't even required because his lectures were so thorough. We did one essay and it was fun. I'm even going to take another history class with him teaching it because he's so good. This class is great for people not majoring in history but are looking to fulfill their GE requirement.

If you have to take a history class (and we all do), Professor Germany is the instructor to have. His lectures are concise and give you everything you need to get your passing grade, which should be a B or better if you take good notes, follow the readings, and come to class and carefully listen to the lecture. Germany is not at all demanding. He lectures the material and expects the student to process the knowledge by notetaking and completing the assignments, which are not much of a burden. There's a paper to do every now and then, and the tests are multiple choice. Professor Germany's greatest strength is his amiability. He peppers his lectures with entertaining asides and the kind of lovably witty comments you'd expect from an older gentleman. (I think he does this because he knows that not everyone will be interested in history, but will have to take the class anyway for core requirements.) Best of all, he lets the class take a break, and usually everyone ends up coming back. You may even develop a taste for history by studying under this instructor.

My first impression was- "oh hell this class is gonna be boring with this old white guy." But I was wrong. He was a really good teacher. His lectures are so organized you don't really need to read the book. He knows his shit. He directly relates themes in the past to current events and issues. I learned alot about our current political crisis and warmongering through his interpretation of the history of this empire.

If you are a non-history major looking for an easy history teacher to satisfy a general education requirement, then Professor Germany is the teacher for you. I am a history major and took his Modern European Civilization class at USF and recommend him for everyone to take. First of all, Professor Germany is a very unique teacher - everyday he comes to class wearing a nice suit, tie, and top hat, and carries a cane and briefcase. He speaks with an accent that mostly sounds Southern, but sometimes sounds more formal, almost British. Professor Germany is clearly a very intelligent man. Everyday he gave clear lectures and even wrote an outline for us on the board as he was lecturing. At the beginning of each class, he re-caps the important points from his previous lecture and always asks if we have questions. He wants all students to learn and for all of his students to learn to enjoy history. He recognizes his students when he sees them around campus, and is easy to approach for extra help. The course I took covered about 500 years of history, but Professor Germany was able to make the information easier to process by centering everything around topics and themes, and most importantly, we didn't have to memorize any dates. Grading was based on 3 tests, which were each 50 multiple choice and true/false questions. If you go to all the classes, pay attention, and take good notes, you will do great on the tests without having to read the books. For my class, there was a general history textbook, which really was unnessary - it basically was just a reference, or if you wanted more detail on something he talked about in class. There were 2 short novels and a commentary type book which were useful, but on each test, there was only 2 or 3 questions that came from these books (plus he goes over them a bit in class). Before each test, Professor Germany gives helpful hints on how to study for the test. He is the perfect teacher for a general education course - he wants his students to leave his class with something, but he also is understanding that students don't want a course with a lot of homework, reading, etc. If he taught more courses at my school, I would definitely take them.

Germany is great teacher. His lectures are very clear and interesting, and he makes a conscious effort to emphasize key points of his lectures, making it easier to study for his exams. He has a great original sense of humor, making his lectures interesting. The only homework assigned are reading assignments, but it isn't necessary to read or buy the book because his exams are based more upon his lectures. Germany is also extremely considerate of the fact that students have lives outside of class. On several occasions students arrived late or missed an exam due to uncontrollable circumstances, unlike most teachers, Germany offered the students an oppurtunity to take the test at another time usually at his office hours.

Mr. Germany was one of the best history teachers I've had so far. Boring at times, but overall a good speaker. The class itself was boring cause I've heard most of the material before but it was interesting to listen to his stories and views. Hes a great teacher. He gives no homework, one essay worth 10% of your grade, and 3 exmams. I got a C+ in the class w/ out doing much. Didnt go to half the classes and opened the book only to study for the exams. Notes are pretty useless, all you gotta do is listen and if your paying any attention and taking his lecture in your gonna pass. I did fairly easily. i thuoght I was alteast be getting a D from my poor study habits and attendence, but turned out I did better than excpected.

He is a very easy teacher. He gives us study guides so we don't have to take notes (In fact, you don't have to attend class. You can still get A).
His exams are quite easy. Three 50 maltiple question exams and all come from his study guides. Also, you don't need to buy the textbook.
This is the class for those who just want A but you can still learn a lot!

George Germany was a nice teacher. Yes, his classes do tend to be repetitive and boring. But his tests come straight from his lectures. If you're taking Hist 121 you don't even need to buy the book (I learned that after I had bought it) So Don't Buy It! He has a really proper accent and makes ocassional jokes, other than that he is a serious man. He only gives three tests throughout the semester. Each test is worth 30% of your grade. The last 10% of your grade is a 5-10 page term paper on Eleanor Roosevelt. NOT A HARD CLASS, IF YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES. I'm not that bright of a student and I'm getting a B, so don't trip. He knows his material well.

If you are thinking about dropping after the first or second class - don't! While professor Germany seems humorless and quirky I promise you will grow to love him. He is such a character! Suggestions: He does fumble around a little with dates and spellings, so use pencil for taking notes. Sit towards the front so you can hear (he speaks quietly). DEFINITELY go to office hours if you are having trouble with the term paper.

Teaching World History is a very difficult assignment -- talk about broad! But it's hard to imagine the topic being covered with more enthusiasm and vigor than shown by Prof. Germany. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his stories wonderfully told, and his obvious love the topic infectious. This is a large survey class, and I took the evening session that ran three straight hours -- talk about a tough teaching environment. But Germany pulled it off wonderfully. Highly recommend.

Professor Germany is one of the best professors to take (he's also the most well-dressed professor as well!). He is very passionate about the subject and his lectures are informative and dynamic. He's always willing to answer questions. He has a narrative approach in lecturing, which made the class interesting. The class consisted of 2 midterms and a non-comprehensive final, which consists of 50 multiple choice questions. His exams are largely based on his lectures. As long as you attend all classes and take good notes, you'll pass. There's also one term paper to write. Overall, you can't go wrong with Germany.

What a character. If you have any appreciation for the finer things, you'll get a kick out of Germany. If you go into his class with at least a semblance of interest in history then you'll do fine. The people who don't really LISTEN to what he's saying would probably find him boring. He obviously loves his subject and knows it back and forth. I didn't crack the book once or look at my notes outside of class and I passed easily, so if you have a good memory it's a piece of cake. Go talk to him during his office hours too, he'll tell you the greatest stories. All in all I highly recommend Professor Germany and should the opportunity arise I fully intend to take another one of his classes.

His lectures are very entertaining if you pay attention, for he recreates many famous speaches from history with great passion. He may seem intimidating at first, but he knows his subject pretty well. He sometimes goes too fast but I brough a mini recorder to class every time and that really helped. We had 2 midterms and an exam and a paper to write. The midterms and exams are very easy. They are closed notes/book but if you study them, they should be easy. The paper is very easy to write. He gives us a lot of time on the paper, which is based on a map from the text book. All you have to do is write about the map. He answers questions, but I think many students in the class found the lectures boring so no one asked much (either that or they were too afraid to ask because Germany is very old-fashioned). Overall, he is a great teacher, but you must be awake during lectures to pass.

What an honor and pleasure to sit in this man's classroom! I'm currently taking six classes an two of my teachers put me in such a bad mood that I smoke immediately after class to calm my nerves. This is my last class of the day, and I always leave feeling I've learned somthing new, not just because he has a vast and readily available knowledge of the subject matter, but because he knows how to present it to others. He's well organized, and has a great sense of humor. He is strictly a lecturer, the only props he uses are maps, but when you're that great of a speaker, you don't need any. I strongly recommend this class to anyone needing extra units or to fulfill their history requirement, likes to think logically and critically, and wants a great teacher who assigns little homework.

Germany's classes are like story-hour. He makes the lectures interesting by not getting caught up in the nitty-gritty details of events - he tells the "big picture" story. However, it is very difficult to know which parts of his lecture are relevant and which aren't - he doesn't really differentiate between important things to remember, and other things that are just plain interesting but not relevant in an exam context. This, of course, results in lots of fervent scribbling, trying to jot down as much as possible. Some of the reviews have said he is boring - he just sits at the front and lectures - and while this is true I don't know what should be expected from a history teacher - tap dancing perhaps? I find most of my teachers just stand at the front and lecture! Exams are 50 multiple choice questions and are not a problem if you attend class and read the text. The text is interesting for a history book - I've found in the past that some history books analyze events and draw conclusions about what the author(s) think stuff meant - this one doesn't. It presents the facts and that's that. Overall, I would highly recommend this instructor.

Professor Germany is one of the (if not the) best teachers I've had at SFSU. What the other reviews say is true, every class is a lecture, but Prof. Germany is not only quite knowledgable about the material, he is also a very entertaining lecturer. He relates ideas and events in history to modern day equivilents, and when reading from one of the course texts (Theban Plays of Sophocles), he acted the parts.

Every time an institution has made me take a history class, it has been a bad experience, but that was not the case this time. Rather, I had a wonderful time in this class. Compliments all around for this teacher! "Enthusiastic about the subject" would be a major understatement where Germany is concerned. Overall, he is a professor who has opened my eyes to the excitement and sheer Life that history has to offer those who take the time to study it. Figuring that out this late in my academic career is my only regret.

Professor Germany is one of the best teachers that I have had at SFSU. Although his teaching style is very traditional, consisting of lecture and multiple choice exams, he actually manages to make American history interesting. I think that most people in my class find him to be boring, but if they listened, really listened, to what he was saying, I think that they would find him to be highly intelligent and funny. I definetly recommend that students take his classes.

Prof. Germany is a good teacher, one of my best teachers at SFSU (which I think there is not so many of them, especially in the "science" field). He really enjoys teaching and very well prepared for all of his lectures. He is also a nice and kind teacher and willing to help his students. If you want to pass the class, you should come to his class regualarly and take notes on what he says. We barely have to read the textbook (which sometimes I find hard to understand) because almost all of the questions for the test is from his lectures, which is good because his lectures contain everything the course has to say. He also encourages us to ask question and gives opinion. Sometimes I don't understand what he says but it is probably because I am an international student, which has a very different background. In the end of the course I felt like I got a lot of knowledge from the course.

This is sort of a boring class because all he does is sit in front of the class and lectures for the whole hour, and you have to take notes from his lectures. After a week, you know that nothing about the class will change. He gives out two midterms and one final, and also a term paper about the novel readings. The exams are all multiple choice, but not easy if you don't study. He grades on a curve, so if you study the material, you'll get an A.
