I've had the opportunity and pleasure to take Peace Law & Human Rights (Phil 375) in the Spring semester of 1998 with Professor Ginger.
The class she taught exposed me to more than just your average lecture style learning, which is often the case in my other experiences at SFSU. The course material included the study of the Constitution of the U.S. and the U.N. Charters.
She was engaging, enthusiastic, genuinely interested in the subject of Global Peace and Justics. Her teaching style encouraged students to speak up in class--but not without first considering of the purposes and reasonings of our comments.
In the summer of 1998, I was fortunate enough to intern with Professor Ginger at the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute, "A Unique Center for Human Rights and Peace Laws Founded in 1965," which Professor Ginger is the Executive Director. Other student interning were mostly Law students from CAL BERKELEY and HASTINGS. I was given the opportunity to be exposed to Legal Documents pertaining to Civil Rights and Human Rights cases. Definitely, I learned more than I had expected to.
More background information that gives her the credibility to teach this subject area are: 1) She is an extremely intelligent individual and was one of the first few female attorney in the U.S.(yes, she goes back that far in history...believe or not). 2) She is a living legacy of the civil rights movement was also photographed with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (before he was a Civil Rights movement leader, he was an attorney) and was the only woman to take part in a Southern Black Lawyers Caucus convention back in the 50's. 3) She is genuinely interested in the subject area of civil and human rights as she experienced injustice personally when she took part in the civil rights movement and was "Blacklisted," thus, barring her from practicing law during the "Communist Witch-Hunt." 4) She is a mother, lawyer, civil rights leader, educator, and a great person to be around--she is charismatic in every sense.
One note on her personality is that if one doesn't understand her fully, it may come across that she is short tempered, but the reality is that most lawyers and people with her statures are that way. Time is limited and extremely valuable.
Try to take her class if you're up for a challenging experience that will leave your mind and heart wanting more. And, you may even find the calling to fight for Social Justice.
