Dr. Gomez can be hard to understand, and she's not always clear about what she wants on assignments, but if you ask, she will write it down, and I think she really does know her material extremely well, not in just a superficial way, but in a deep way. I found this course very enlightening and I am glad I took it with her -- not being able to fully understand what was going on some of the time simply proved some of the things we learned in this class (about multicultural education). I'd take a class from her again. She also used a great textbook and excellent course readings.

Ines Gomez has a very cute personality and is well meaning (some of the time). But it is very difficult to understand her. I have never seen an instructor with poorer communication skils with students than this lecturer. She talks and talks about particular tasks or assigments while students sit there, not understanding a word. When it comes time to complete an explained task, students are all left with "what are we doing? where? are we working in groups? what chaper?" and the confusion continues. To make matters worse, she also has a hard time listening to students which creates a lot of misunderstandings in the classroom. She rarely asks for clarification and automatically assumes what she wants to hear. She is easily fooled by students who knows nothing and pretends to know the material by supeficially saying some long words radomly picked out from the text. She is also obsessed with theories and theorists, without emphasizing much practice or the relevance it has on the real world. She takes role each class period and grades heavily on attendance. Taking her class has been a complete waste of time for me. I was very dissappointed with this class and had expected more from SFSU's Credential/Elementary Ed. department. Second language acquisition is an extrememly important course and should be taught by someone who is more respectful to students, knowledgeable about the content, and will apply methods that are actually useful in real life, not a bunch of "blah blah blahs" that are just pretty on paper and serves absolutely no purpose to children or the real world.
