Hayashi has math teacher superpowers

Dr. Eric Hayashi is the best. I'd taken three calculus classes before at another school (*cough* Foothill College *cough*) yet I never really understood what all those weird symbols meant until I took Hayashi's class. His lectures almost always had exactly the right pace, where I could follow what he was doing but not be bored by the repetition. He assigned a very reasonable amount of homework which tended to have several easy questions and one or two hard ones, the harder of which many students were unable to do -- but he would always go over those in class during the next session.

Hayashi really knows the material very well. Even on days when he obviously had a cold or seemed a bit tired he was still able to explain everything, just a bit more slowly.

Also, he's very friendly and is always around to answer any questions or whatever. I can be a critical bitch sometimes (just read my other reviews) but there's really nothing to complain about with Hayashi.

The choice is clear - no teacher can compare AT ALL

If you take any other teacher for calculus, you are stupid. Hayashi can teach calculus to a monkey, and make him like it too!

This man is the best teacher on Earth

This man is the best teacher on Earth. Perfect English, little homework but enough to learn the subject, fantastic lectures, funny examples, and always a smile and a silly math joke. He can make anyone understand anything; he always approaches things from all angles and answers all questions before they are even asked. Make sure you take him as many semesters as possible, or else you are a complete fool.

The best teacher

Dr. Hayashi is probably THE best math teacher of SFSU. He is very nice, approachable and explains very well. He will never try to trick his students on his exams: the 2 exams and the final are straightforward, taken from a review sheet that he gives right before the exams. I would recommend this teacher for any math classes that you need to take.

A++++ Teacher

Prof Hayashi is a great teacher for calculus III. He gives lots of examples in class and the homework is a great prep for the tests. He answers questions willingly and you will learn the subject and it will not be painful. Good guy, abit of a geek, but what do you expect from a math prof.?

Great Teacher

Hayashi, is a great teacher but lacks giving examples in his lecture since the book is not helpful at all. But he is very helpful if you go see him during his office hours. His T.A is also helpful. Other than that you will enjoy and learn so much in Calc so take Hayashi.

A professor with patience and effectiveness!!

I consider Professor Hayashi is an excellent math teacher at SFSU because he is very thorough, patient and extremely helpful during office hours. If the students have any questions or concerns about their homework, he will be willing to talk to them, to discuss the problem and to help them understand the material as well, especially his teaching method, it's effective and easy to understand. Moreover, he makes learning more easy by making abstract problems understandable to students. His grading standard is as followed: 10 or more quizzes(the one with lowest score will be dropped), homework assignment will be collected on the day after, 2 midterms and 1 final(a piece of notes is allowed for the final). Even though there are lots of homework, his class is fun in which it can help students overcome their weakness in quantitative resoning like i did. Overall, this is an effective instructor and i would recommand this teacher to everyone. If you want to learn, take him!!!

A great math teacher

Prof. Hayashi is a very good teacher. He is very patient, thourough, and clear in his lectures. Homework is assigned and collected at every class meeting. There are also weekly quizzes, which are based on the homework assignments. There are 2 midterms and a final. Prof. Hayashi is very generous with grading and gives students the most points that he/she deserves. Hayashi makes the material easy to understand and demonstrates lots of examples during the lectures, and answers any homework questions that students may have. He is an excellent teacher to have for any math course.

Professor Hayayshi is a very good teacher. I would definetely recommend him. He's very patient and seems like an all around nice guy. He goes over each section so that you understand, so when you do the homework you usually don't have any problems. If you do, he goes over the homework in class. The quizes and tests aren't too hard, just as long as you follow the homework and come too the lectures. If you miss too many lectures you may become lost unless you're rally good at following the book's examples. Just go to class, and do your homework, and you should do pretty well.

He's a very good teacher. He covered the materials well in the class. He usually covered solutions for his homeworks in class, and he assigned homeworks for students. His homeworks were mostly difficult, but it worthed while! Since in the end of the semester, his homeworks will count an amount of percentage to our final grade. His exams were not easy, but just fair! He's a guy whom we can talk to, and he's very understanding teacher. He would like to talk about your performance in class and how you can improve. One experience I had with him that I mistakenly turned in my final exam to him that I turned in the scratch paper, but I took home my final. The next day I realized, I called him, but he calmly talked to me and promised me to grade the exam. He understood my situation and did make a fair judgment. His class was fun, and he's also not a tough grader.

There were two midterms and a final. Notes could be used on the final but not on the midterms. Calculators could not be used on exams. Some problems were dropped from the scoring of exams if many students did poorly on them, and there were sample problems before each exam that were fair examples of what to expect. Homework was collected once a week. Professor Hayashi is extremely knowledgeable, but not out of touch--he gave good explanations of complex material, and was able to make an abstract subject more understandable. He is patient when the class is slow (he treats the students with respect), and is always willing to answer questions. He is generous with his time during office hours, and also serves (quite effectively) as the department advisor for math majors. Highly recommended!
