What the F@*k!

Ms. Head is nuts. yeah she knows her work, but imposes HER ideas a s facts and allows other people to believe it. Basically for every comment she makes, you could make a comment to counteract her theory, that would make YOU a racists. Ive never heard of a good argument against racism is answering with another racist comment as a fact. Let's put it this way, when I went to the SF Public library, by coincedence the guy who had helped me took her class in 1989. Long ass time ago. AND YES- He tooo had the same opinion. In fact, he remembered her very well as the crazy lady who told her class that she disliked the white students, and yes that " every black person should go outside and spary aerosol cans into the air so the Ozone layer would get screwed and the rays from the sun would give white people cancer and they would die because they have less melanin". Ofcourse, that wasn't a lie, how could some random ass person from 1989 have such a detailed encounter and remember it!

MayGod bless all of you who take this class. By the way all you Black folks that think she won't act wrong to you, you ain't safe either, she hates white people AND hates being Black too. Kissing her ass wont work. There is a fine line between telling things as they are and then being an extremist. This is wherte we are at folks.

Bad attitude, but the class wasn't too bad

Before taking Professor Head's class, I heard many.....scary things about her. From her personality to her tests to her assignments to her textbooks, I'd heard it all. So, needless to say, I was a bit apprehensive about taking her class, but my mother told me to try her out for myself, so I did--and I'm glad. While Professor Head is kind of crazy, grumpy, rude, and mean, her class wasn't that bad. Your grade is based on 2 midterm exams, which are each 15% of your grade, a 10 page term paper, which is 30% of your grade, and a final, which is 30% of your grade as well. The other 10% is participation (just make comments or ask questions during lectures, and you'll be fine). Her tests actually aren't that bad. While there's a lot of reading, she gives you study questions the week before the test. All you have to do is study, and you'll be fine. Don't let her reputation scare you away from her classes. Just suck it up, expect some grumpiness, and do the reading, and you'll be fine. Good luck.

Terrible Head

I took Prof. Head's class in the Spring of 2003, which was to be my final semester. Thinking that, as an African-American, any class pertaining to racism would be a breeze. Especially, since we were about the ssame age and probably shared similiar experiences. None of the above were true! I found Prof. Head to be very disgruntled, maybe because she wasn't born white or she has been made to feel less than. She was not as punctual as I would prefer a professional educator to be. Her assignments were black and white when initially discussed, but full of gray areas when it came to grading. I think she grades on the half scale: (If you deserve an A, you get a C based on something not stated previously).

Test were returned late giving one little time to make decisions about dropping class. I decided after the second test would not be returned until after the final drop date to drop the class. While waiting outside her office to get the papers signed I overheard her say that she would rather not waste her time with the products of public schools, referring to her current classes at that time.

Boycott Dr. Laura Head now! Because of her I had to pay another $811.00 dollars for that 3 units to graduate.

Knows her stuff- but bitter at the world

While prof. head is extremely opinionated she does know what she is talking about and over the course of the semester will be able to communicate her ideas and the facts to support them (most of them). She never left her chair in the front of the room behind a desk and seemed to want to keep her distance from the students. The readings she chooses are good, and while it was annoying to have to go across town several times to try to pick up the books and reader, I can understand her opinion to support small non white business. The tests are fair and you are given study guides with a list of 10 questions that she chooses 6 from and you have to write about 3. Easy to study for, if you study at all, and the final paper is open to almost any topic that interests you relating to the class. Yes, she is bitter, yes she isn't the easiest person to talk to, but she does know the facts and is willing to let everyone in class talk. Ask questions in class if you want to get the full understanding of the knowledge. One question or even a comment on a small part of the reading will give her a direction in which to go. She is also understanding of students who have other things going on in their lives other than school. Overall, she has the knowledge but is hindered by being so disgruntled with the world. Think a little, present your opinions, and you can have very informative and insightful class discussions with a well read and highly educated person.

Pro. L. Head needs to retire

Professor L. Head class this pass semester (Spr.03) and it was okay, but she wasn't clear on assignments given in class. Pro. Head didn't give feedback as need in order for student to seek help, because we did not know if we need more clarity on a assignment due to papers being handed back weeks later.

If you decide to take her course BLS 525 be aware that although this is an oncampus class your still alone.

Bitch from hell

This teacher is incompetent and very opinionated. She blames the White Folks for everything and using reverse racism. She hardly ever shows up to school and then she expects for the assignments to be based on lectures that we don't have. She should not be allowed to teach. One time she brought up about how she told someone that she wanted to shoot a White Professor here at SFSU. I would have to say that she does know here material but is very bias. Something needs to be done about her. Most of the class did bad. She loves to give people a hard time and there are many complaints about here to the Chancelor.

Fair, but VERY high expectations...

Dont let the horror stories scare you! Luara HEad is definitely opinionated, there is no doubt about that! However, you can learn so much from her class. You definitely have to apply yourself to pass this class! If you are a slacker, forget about it!

Some may call her racist, but she has the knowledge to teach the class. People think that she is mean because she doesn't take any crap or any BS excuses. She feels that if you are a college student, then you need to be doing college level work. She is fair and makes her expectations very clear. The Students are not held responsible for any material not covered or discussed in class. She gives you the opportunity to ask questions, and to give your opinion, but of course, you will have needed to have done the reading to know what is going on.

The tests are in class essays, and she gives out the exact essay questions before the test, and even allows you to ask questions. The purpose of her tests is for you prove that you have "mastered" the readings. Basically, you need to prove that you read. So, take some info out of the book and incorporate what she says in classroom discussions.

She always available during her office hours, and she is quite nice if you go talk to her.

This semseter she has been absent a lot due to the stomach flu. I would rather have her stay home sick, than to thorw up all over the classroom. Some students have given her a hard time about it, not to her face of course. I do think she is fair, but again, if you are a slacker or do not want to take the class seriously, dont take Laura Head. She is very serious about her job and she can tell whether or not you take the course seriously.

I like her and think that she is a challenge and that is why so many people have a problem with her. She has a ideology that goes against the grain and she isn't an easy pass.If you want to learn something, take this course. If you want to take a class that requires little reading and work...this is not the course for you!

I have not recieved a grade in this class yet, but I am keepin it REAL!

This is a very informative class.

Dr. Head is an extremely well educated person and has a lot of knowledge to offer. I recommend that this class be taken by students who are serious about learning about Black Studies. This is not an "easy A" class as some students (mainly freshmen)think and soon find out. Dr. Head is no joke and you will know this on the first day. If you are very interested in learning about Black psych and have good writing skills and love to read and can respect HER OPINIONS, even if you don't feel the same way, then you will do fine.

Dr. Head is the most stubborn instructor that I have ever encountered. She will listen to your opinions and concerns but not acknowledge them as having any value. All that she values is her theories, beliefs and opinions. She goes strictly on her book and readings. The only way to do well in her class in by memorizing the information in the book and stating the information as facts. She never made it clear what it is that she was looking for in her midterm, reaearch paper or final. No one in the class knew what she wanted. I guess she may have wanted us to write exactly what the book read. This means that her entire class was to summarize the readings, no analyzing, becausre that would be wrong according to her.

She is actually pretty interesting and seems to know the subject. However, she seems to come to class everyday looking very angry and teaches like she's going to kill someone. If you try asking her for help, she'll just yell at you till you figure the answer out for yourself. I would never take a class with her again. Not the type of teacher would give up time to help you with the subject.

Introduction to Black Psychology was a very intresting class. Dr. Head seemed to forget it was an introductory class. She expected us to already know a lot of the material and she would put us down if we didn't. I learned a lot of new and interesting concepts and theories but Dr. Head's teaching style is what veered me away from becoming more interested in the class. She makes students feel stupid when they don't answer questions correctly. She gets mad if the class doesn't ask questions, but when I asked fellow students why they didn't ask questions they said they were scared to because the teacher would put them down. Her midterms (there are 2 of them) are not hard as long as you come to class and know the material. You have to be very specific and have detailed answers. There is also a 10 to 15 page term paper due at the end of the semester. I will admit the class was challenging and interesting but the attitude of Dr. Head changed my views about the class. She made it so I didn't want to go to class. I will probably get a C in the class.

Dr. Head breaks it down! In addition to knowing the issues and presenting theories, she is very open to learning from the students. We read about white privalege, the Cress theory, the U.N. law regarding acts of genocide, and education as a means of imposing culural imperialism. I really enjoyed reading Faces at the Bottom of the Well by Bell Hooks. We had two tests that, if you attend regularly, you will pass without problem. There is one research paper that is due at the end of this semester. This was one of the best courses that I have taken at SFSU.

This is the one course at SFSU that I learned the most in. Class is always interesting and I look forward to it every day. She is not afraid to voice her opinions and bring important issues to the attention of her students. Although the class is challenging and demanding, I believe that anyone who puts in a little effort can get at least a "B". This is probably the most thought provoking professor I have had or will ever have.
