Gene teaches his class in a style that is true to life. The main issues people seem to have is that his style is not conventional (the kindergarden comments etc.) i.e. these people were expecting their MBA to be a boring sit down accounting like acedmic course. Gene's take is that an MBA is about Life, business is part of life - life is not part of business - Understand? Guess what in a meeting or interview people don't care what you have learned, how you think the meeting or interview should go - they want to see something different, this is life. The whole A's to females and B's to males is rubbish, I received an A, I am a male point proven. But again you note that in real life males like females therefore will be favorable to them - Again real life, not MBA equality stuff! What he does have is a big personality that some may find difficult to handle if they do - don't do an MBA it wont help you, in life [business] you have to be able to adapt. Listen to what he says, engage him as much as you want - he will welcome it, believe me think like him (just a little) and you will be successful. p.s. I have kept in touch with him personally and he always has time and is interested. If you can't understand him them you may be book smart but have no intelligence. Very Highly recommended class.

Gene is alot better than SCOTT!! You will not be sorry. He does have many opinions that he shares with the class, so as long as you dont agrue with him, he will like you. In class, we do many group activies such as bop it to let you learn the deeper meaning of things. For homework, there are 2 page reflections of what you have learned from in the previous class. Test are group Jeoparady.

With all the negative things we deal with at SFSU, Prof Hendrix makes it worth while. Not taking his class during your MBA is a waste in my opinion. Yes, the guy is intense, and yes he seems a little angry, but the guy tells it like it is. His class is one of the few classes I have taken where I actually didn't want to miss. Each class you experienced something different.
After not teaching at SFSU this past fall, I am happy that he is back teaching the Weds night section Downtown. Everyone I have recommended to take his class have thanked me for doing so. You will too.

It is one of the best teacher at SFSU, somebody who had a LOT of experience to share with students. His classes are great, interesting and I am not agree at all when I read about him that the class is easy and that he gives only B to guys. But some students have always something bad to say because they think they know everyhting... He knows how to deal with an audience and I would recommend him to students.

The class I took with Gene Hedrix is by far the best class I have ever taken in my entire academic career. The class was Organizational Design and Management (BUS 842) and his style of teaching about management through in class group games was amazing. No amount of reading or listening to a lecturer drone on and on in a class room can really teach what it is like to be a manager in the trenches. Gene gets his students out from behind their desks and gives them games to solve in small groups and as a class. Those games very obviously and directly teach about group dynamics, and the 'soft' skills every manager needs to know. The case studies he used were relevant to current business practices and the discussions that followed were engaging and lively. One thing every student of his should know however is that he does push his students in a friendly manner. Some students, especially those from different cultures may easily misunderstand his aggressive sense of humor as being rude. Even Americans may misinterpret his dry, cynical style as being too harsh. But he is genuinely trying to push people into understanding more about themselves. He will argue with students openly in class by engaging and challenging their opinions. But he is respectful of students differences and will shake your hand after an argument. I would take ANY class he has to offer. I fully intend to hire him as as an outside consultant to give lectures to my employees when I return back to the work force.

I believe Dr. Hendrix is a great professor for Management. Alot of the professors besides Dr. Hendrix at SFSU are in the teaching profession as a comfort zone rather than challenging their students. Hand written tests or quizes can always be handed down from classmate to class mate but in Dr. Hendrix class there is no cheat sheets . Its all based on self merit along with team work. This class is Management, not Accounting or Finance. This class is for those who are in the process to execute some real life managemet skills. Foreign students and sensetive Politically Correct people may feel alienated. But real Management students will see the purpose of each exercise. Dr. Hendrix has thought me the best lesson so far from the MBA program.

What can I say?
When he's number one, who needs to take number 2 as a professor?
Simply the best.
Take him and you'll learn lots about management.

Bring your enthusiasm and bring your thinking cap with you. This is not your typical Business Management class. Professor Gene Hendrix's introduces students to various CEO's and management theory. The selection of CEO's and their "fit" in their organization is a weekly theme. Each week or so a new CEO and business leaders' thoughts (eg disruptive technologies) is presented in a series of articles. A paper is due every other week or so to get the student's level of comprehension of the relevant points. Many students talk about the tasks that the class as a group must perform. These incude tinker toys, rubber balls and blindfolds. If you understand the abstract relationship to business and weekly discussions then you will do quite well. If you don't get it, then well, you don't get it. The final is a takehome paper. A scenario is created for you, but you select the personalities to discuss their business views.

I think for those that rated Gene low really did not get the purpose of his class... and that was to think for yourselves. Finally a class where you can express your views and thoughts on things rather than have someone tell you. Do professors really have all the answers? I don't think so. Anyway I enjoyed the class and the teacher. This is a class that prepares you for thinking about life and what kind of manager you want or aspire to be. You can't be taught how to manage people well.

This is an easy class there is no doubt about it. But be warned, if you are a guy and want an A, its not gonna happen. He only gives A's to girls and B's to boys. He is a completely sexist son of a bitch. He comes off as a nice guy, a very relaxed and well informed teacher. But as soon as you step out of his mindset or something doesnt go as he wants it too, he completely loses it! Once in class he totally freaked out and yelled at us all, as if we were in kindergarten!! Basically this is an easy class, i got a B and i did absolutely nothing, if your a guy though, just dont get mad when you hear that he gave the girl who showed up 2 times and A!!!!

Gene Hendrix, In my words professor with no personality. I took this class after lots of recommendation from my friends BUT it was a big blow, puffffff EXCEPT the videos he showed. He is popularized like a big budget movie which is off screen, the first week. Management teacher who is always complaining about his collegues. I feel that he has some disbalace, usually seen in people who have a lonely life with no aim. When it comes to Grading he only gives B and A's no fuss about it but what is the criteria? I will suggest students to meet him before going for his class, as per me he can be a good KINDERGARDEN teacher, not a professor for Graduate school.

This class was a big disapointment. I had heard good things from other students and a faculty member about Gene Hendrix so I enrolled in the class and stuck with it even after a very unpleasant fist class. Big mistake. For the rest of the semester, going to class was a struggle and I counted the classes left until the end because I found the guy so arrogant and offensive. The pluses: He had some good ideas and I learned a few things from the homework, the games he made us play in class, and the videos he showed us. Grading, yes I guess he gave everyone either an A or a B. Those did not seem to be related to your performance however but to whether you fitted in his little "psychological cubicle" i.e. if your Myers-Briggs profile fitted with his own. Good luck. The minuses: You have to buy his one-time "modules" as a text for $75 (no buy-back). Some didn't mention the authors of the articles he copied in there, the date when they were written, and one didn't even have the page numbers indicated! He is an incredibly sloppy and disorganized instructor. He even rationalized it by saying an organization is a crazy environment so students had to get some exposure to that in his class. Yeah. He has very strong opinions and has no room for yours. He rants and raves about "evil" SFSU faculty and management, "incompetent" MBA students, "stupid" foreign students and the world in general (Osama Ben Ladin came up a few times...). That is not mentioning the downright rude language he can use. So much wasted time! He especially targeted foreign students and made some truly degrading remarks to a number of them all semester long. He did not moderate or animate debates well either and those were weak. What Gene Hendrix had that was so special was lost on me or maybe he lost it. In class, he behaved more like a drunk sailor than a professor of management. He didn't seem to be someone who enjoyed teaching or who liked MBA students and he came across as a frustrated malcontent who couldn't get his life together and took it on his students. I expected better from the class of MGMT 842.

This teacher gets a C because you dont learn anything from him. He doesnt give feedback on your papers and projects, so you never know if your analysis is good or not. His reason for giving you a grade on your paper is "Look at a paper that got a higher grade than yours." How is that supposed to tell me on how well i did, which areas could i improve my paper, etc.. I would have given this teacher an F, but he grades easy. So thats why I bumped him to a C. The teacher shows great videos in class where i learned from them. But i never learned from his lectures. So showing great videos doesnt make you a good teacher. If you dont care about feedback on your papers, not learning anything from teacher, and getting a good grade, then take this teacher.

This wass indeed an eye opener. I happened to take this class in the evening and during that period your concentration span is a little below par but Prof. Hendrix managed to keep the class very lively and entetaining I never missed even a single class. A bit odd in that there are games and you may feel like you are back in Kindergaten but this is indeed a fun and exciting learning environment.

He is definitely not conventional (by SFSU standards, anyway) with his lecture style - the class is extremely interactive. He is also quite refreshing - unlike most SFSU professors, class material is very topical, and he expects you to actually think, and not just regurgitate the readings.
If you want someone to teach you how to think critically, this is the class to take..

Perhaps the most entertaining class and insightful professor in the SFSU MBA program! Rather than the drab-boring lectures, do the reading, then recite what you've read or learned, Dr. Hendrix would rather have you interact with your classmates in a non-threatening environment and watch videos on successful business people. The course is a great opportunity to voice your opinions and ideas, but if you're shy or not vocal, you'll wind up doing what the loud or extroverted people want to do. The games may seem silly, but it does have a lesson to learn from and proves that even the simplest of tasks can be darn difficult with twenty or so people with varying opinions and work experience. I'd say this class had the least amount of work and reading, and throughout the course I thought he was joking that we'd have a final exam. The only negative was "reader" fee, which I thought was a bit expensive for photocopies of articles. Recommend taking this class in the evening, where the majority of students have work experience. You'll learn a lot from your classmates too. A definite professor to take!
