I have taken her ENG208 and ENG210. I think she is a good teacher. I have been reviewing some bad reviews about her. But, I disagree! In my experience, her strictness was not the mean way. It is good to be disciplinery as a teacher. She is very funny. She gives you some make up stuff if you get some bad grade on homework.

While reading some reviews about Vicky, I got really surprised by the way people can get easyly offended or take things personally. There is nothing wrong with the teacher's. Vicky Holder was the best teacher I had at SFSU and I recommend her to anyone who needs to take ENG411. We had really lively and interesting discussions about our readings and she stimulated our thoughts in a lot of ways. She is a great teacher and deserves to know that !

Vicky Holder is not a mean teacher.I took ENG210 and ENG411 with her because she is a funny teacher and students can learn alot from her.She is funny and humourous and she likes to makes fun of students,which is probably the reason why some students think she is rude and mean.I was "scolded" by her several times,but i know she was just making fun of me and wanting me not to make the same mistakes again.Both english classes that i had taken with her,i had a good time laughing at her black humour.Yes,it might not be easy to score an A for ENG411 because any English classes requires a reasonable good English proficiency,and ENG411 is no exception. Vicky does not deduct too much points on grammer,infact she helps alot on correcting grammer mistakes.Writing style and the content are what count for ENG411,of course your grammer cannot be too bad.Overall,her class is not very difficult nor over demanding and she returns essays in reasonable length of time.For people who likes to write or wants to learn more,Vicky is defintely the teacher for you.If you do not like English and expect an easy A,you may not want to take her class.If you like to enjoy a few jokes and good laugh in class,it is non other than Vicky.She is the funniest teacher i ever had in SFSU.

Well, after reading the evaluations, I did really decided not to take her in the first place because she sounded mean and boring. But after I was unable to add into the other English classes, her class was my last hope. She really didn't turn out to be such a bad teacher as everyone had described. She is pretty funny (especially the times when her memory collapsed). I have to admit, sometimes her class IS really boring, but most of the times it's quite ok (come on guys, what do you expect from an English class?) Well, one thing for sure though, she really does pick on students who seem to be lost on her lectures, but she really just wants you to try harder and learn something. Her class is really not that hard (at least it's an easy B), plus, she always lets you retake the missing tests and turn in late hws (warning: you will only get a credit, not a grade ok?). Oh yeah, and a lot of times the hws are expected to be written down in the book so it will not need to be turned in (plus, a lot of times she would forget the given assignments). Her final is only an essay. So if you are looking for an easy B in your English class, I really recommend Ms. Holder.

also she is always late in the class time.

I am so uncomfortable in her class.

I really recommend choosing another clase.

She will make you buy a red-ink pen in order to help you realize what kind of mistakes you make on the paper. Unless you work on your graded paper with that red pen, then you will leave your common grammer mistake without having anybody correcting your stupid mistake. She looks sturn, but she's nice. She looks smart, but she is actually smart. I think she loves to teach English to non-English speaker. You can see ESL teacher who are nice, but I don't think you can find a teacher who is as attentive as Ms. Holder.

i highly recomend this instructor for those who is going to take ENG212. she is very friendly to every one of students in the class. she picks up each students to speak out in the class but she makes students to feel comfartable to speak out. the materials for ENG212 is not hard at all. just go to the class and enjoy the class. tests are not hard, some vocab and some grammer. you'd better do the homeworks coz she will pick everyone to answere those but the homeworks neer be hard.

Ms. Holder for me is the best English teacher I've ever had. She demands a lot from her students but she's always there to help you out. She is not very critical of anyone's point of view and she tries to understand what you want to say. She also tries her best to make student think analytically and critically about literary readings.

Ms. Holder is a killer. If you want to challenge yourself with this very detail oriented teacher, you go ahead taking this teacher. When she grades paper, everything you can imagine that she will take points off. Most of my peer said that anyone can get an A from her and the person no less than a genious. I wouldn't recommend this teacher if you want to pass her grammar composition classes. If you really really want to learn something and willing to risk your GPA . I bet she is for you. Good Luck!

Holder was not recommended by most of my friends since she never give grades higher than B+. Her class was seen as boring and not lively. However, it was just people's misunderstanding. I took the last English class with her and I found that she was pretty funny. I cannot say she is the best, but she's much better than all the rumous all around. She has her own teaching style and she prepared everything before she comes to class. She grades papers fast and it never take her more than 2 lectures. She jokes in class, but it was all very American style. Since this is an ESL class, so the jokes don't really make the atmosphere brighter nor more relax. However, I discovered that she is pretty good and her grades are not very strict. Even though your paper do not really match the topic, the style counts. In other words, a good writing style saves you. That's all I have to say and I wish the last English class at SFSU make all of you a good impression to the ESL department.
