I think his class can be a little furstrating. A major part (90%) of the grades in this class are based on black board quizze. He gives 2 papers during the semester, no mid term and his final is preety easy, its at home too. all though its not easy to get an A. He wont bump your grades and thinks he knows too much about media and expects everyone to know the same, he doesnt teach from the text book although you have to buy it coz his black board quizzes are based on the text and his lecture, he tries to creat an impression that he knows too much about computers and imposes it on the students. I would say dont take the class unless you dont have a choice or unlesss you like talknig about media for 2 hours, also he will make you subscribe to ny time for 4 months, i say dont do it, jsut read the paper online, much better and you will save 100$ for the semester

As a freshmen looking forward to majoring in journalism, Johnson sort of made me HATE journalsim! I understand that he wants us to be computer literate, but Oh my goodness, he takes it too far. Also, I realize he is busy, but he is the most impersonable person, everything is done through email. He will assign something and then change the date with out so much as a word and then will let the new date go by and you have NO idea you missed an assignment until you see your grade. One good thing about him, he is very knowlegdable about the topic.

Johnson is the weakest link of an otherwise good journalism department at SFSU. He spent the first half of the semester talking about research (one of the topics was the difference between a library and a museum...where would I be without that helpful info!) and the second half lecturing off power point presentations about Jour. History. We didnt get to finish everything he wanted to finish. Maybe there should have been more time spent on that in the beginning.
An assignment was assigned, then cancelled, and then magically assigned again without any warning. He sent many emails that were useless and wound up deleted in 2 seconds. He gave 2 online quizzes that were easy if you took notes (because no one read the book), but he went so fast through a lot of it, you would miss a lot of important things. His final was probably the only good part of the semester...it was very easy and he wanted us to B.S. about what we "learned" this semester.
We had a group project that lasted basically the whole semester and it relied on a lot of computer skills. Most of us didnt have them. He seems so hung up on computers and the Internet that he should be teaching at Heald or something. Even his colleagues dont have favorable things to say about him, as I talked with another jour. teacher of mine and that person couldnt think of much good to say about him.
This is not a quality teacher. I did not spend $913 to have a teacher like him. He was a waste of my time and my money, and he caused me and most of my group members nothing but heartache. There was a reason only about 1/3 of the class was left by the end of the semester. If you have to take this guy, I wish you the best of luck. You will need it...trust me.

this guy knows his stuff, but he is so gruff and unclear in what he wants that he is impossible to get along with. He makes it completely unclear as to what he wants in an assignment and he is not the nicest of guys. He is very militant about the journalism program and he is all about if you dont understand it the first time then you deserve to fail or deserve to leave the journalism program. He is a real elitist when it comes to journalism and doesnt value any students opinions, basically what he says goes. If you can avoid this guy at all costs

This class was completely unorganized. Johnson did seem like he knew a lot about the subject and seemed enthusiastic about the material, but the way assignments were handled and the emphasis on computers and the internet DROVE EVERYONE IN THE CLASS FUCKING CRAZY. Directions throughout the semester were unclear. Assignments were assigned, cancelled, and then re-assigned, leaving students utterly confused about what the fuck was going on. Over 1/3 of the students dropped this class. I wish I would have been so wise. As is, probably half the class and myself are going to have to take this class over again. It's a shame, too. I worked harder on this class than I did for any of my others this semester.

Mr. Johnson is a very vague individual with a very high opinion of himself. He did not make course objectives clear, required materials that were costly and not even used within course context, and failed half of my class. Obviously, he did not notice that the standard deviation of grades was way off kilter. He would assign a story, trash the results he got, but never explained why the stroies were bad or how we could improve.
