Good guy, easy class, don't know why so many bad reviews?

After reading all the negative reviews about this teacher, I can vouch that most of those comments are true. Professor Kang does indeed ramble on and on about his life and "tigers" and "bears" during his lectues. But the bottom line is that from my experience, he made the class fun and enjoyable. And to tell you the truth, showing up to class in almost optional. All you need to do is download his powerpoint lectures, read the chapters on your own time, and most importantly practice the assigned homework problems, which he also gives the solutions to. The homework essays are a piece of cake, and the cumulative tests should be no reason anyone should even complain or fail his class. Kang is a goofy and humorous teacher and I'm glad I took his class despite being reluctant after reading his reviews. Oh and I'm not one of those bookworm geeks in case yall are wondering why I'm supporting Prof. Kang. I took Acct 100 3 times, and Acct 101 twice before I passed. I wish I took Kang the first time for both Acct courses.

NO GOOD

Can this guy be any more into to himself than the actual course subject. Every class is about his personal stories that has nothing to do with the actual subject. He likes to talk about himself a lot and I mean a lot. Do I really want to know about how he use to be a gymnast???? I want to learn about the subject. His lectures are not clear and doesn't help you in understanding the subject. A horrible teacher.

Which class to choose...

I just wanted to add that if you notice he's teaching two classes on the same days, my recommendation is to pick the "FIRST" class.

He tends to write on the board in the first class, while he lectures. And when you are in the second class (presumably back to back with the first), the lecture material is already on the board, and he won't clearly walk you through it. He just tells you to copy down the info. and you're not sure where to start.

His writing is semi-unreadable, but it can pass. He tends to use visual items including flow charts, graphs, charts, tables, etc. with lots of short hand writing, abbreviations, etc. If you're a "visual" or have a gnack for creative things, his lecture might "aid" you. However, if this isn't ur strong side, you might want to spend some extra time at the library with the solutions guide.

RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You basically don't need a textbook in this class. Just photocopy the questions that he gives in the beginning of semester. He gives out the answers with details both for homework and tests. The tests are similiar like the homework. The test is cumulative but he pulls out exact question from previous tests. He is a FAIR GRADER. HE GIVES CREDIT IF YOU MISCALCULATE IN THE TEST. I know many accounting teachers don't give partial credit.

Not for everyone

If you are an Accounting major, DO NOT take Professor Kang. Trust me - YOU WILL REGRET IT.

Sure..Professor Kang has a nice personality, thinks highly of his students and gives inspirational speeches, but he is NOT a good accounting instructor. He may be passionate about teaching, but his lectures tend to be a bit confusing and he doesn't have the best handwriting, either.

Call me a non-scholar (people who took him will know what I mean) but I had to drop ACCT101 because Dr. Kang's class structure was driving me nuts. First off, he assigns homework for every class meeting. Ok, that's fair enough but the HWs he assigns are based on materials that haven't been covered in class yet. Thus, in order to complete the homework, we're left to learn the material on our own..and that could get pretty stressful after a while. I mean how could we do the homework if we hardly have a clue on how to do it? Fine, he doesn't collect all the homework, but he does collect random ones throughout the semester to be graded, so you always have to have them done just in case.

I know I probably sound like a lazy bum based on the previous paragraph but seriously...even if I hated his class structure, if I truly felt that taking Dr. Kang's class might be worth it, I would've stuck it out to the very end. Unfortunately, from the beginning, I could already tell that staying in his class would've been a big mistake for an Accounting major like myself. As much as I hate to say this, Dr. Kang simply can't teach! He'd probably make a wonderful motivational speaker, though.

Anyway, if you're a non-accounting major who just needs to get the class requirement overwith, who knows - Dr. Kang might be the man for you..BUT if you're an Accounting major who truly wants/needs to learn, you're better off taking someone else. Don't let the lure of the supposed "easy tests" fool you; it's not worth it. Like someone said in another review, "You'll be left in the dust for your future classes."

Torturous lecture, but easy tests as a reward

I just took JKang for ACCT101. I will make the facts as objective and unbias as I can so the reader of this can make his own conclusions abouting taking his class.

People wrote about how in an hour and a half long class, he'd spend over an hour talkin about himself and 20 minutes on the suject matter. This is true. He is really nice and probably a great mentor, but he spends more time motivating the students than he does lecturing about the material.

His lecturing style is also not that great and torturous at times. He lectures unclearly about the subject matter and many problems that are very simple, he somehow complicates them and makes them sound way harder than they really are. Many of the homework problems you can figure out from the solutions manual and is sometimes just as simple as basic arithemetic, given u know what number represents what. However, Kang makes elaborate tables, graphs, and charts illustrating the problem and making it more confusing that it really is.

BUT here is the thing, his tests and homework are easy. He gives automatic A- to everyone who simply does the homework, and gives A+ when he really likes it. The tests are very straightforward and easy. If you did the homework problem assigned, its the exact same thing except with the numbers changed ($400 instead of say $200, and 15% instead of 10%). Also out of every chapter, he only chooses a single problem or concept as homework. Usually he chooses the easiest problem too. So in actuallity, you only need to learn how to do one problem from each chapter to study for the final.

To top things off, hes an easy grader. My neighbors blatantly had the answer wrong but still got full credit because Kang checked the scratch paper and noticed that she did the problem right but had a small arithmetic mistake that messed up the answer.

Recommendation: Do go to class just so you know whats assigned and what will be on the test. For homework problems, just get the solutions manual and it will teach you how to do it. Dont listen to Kang for the homework, he will confuse and complex what would normally be an easy problem. The test will be the same format and structure of your homework, if not easier. Keep in mind, hes an easy grader. Also the lowest score he will give is a D (which is passing).

Me and some of my friends did go to class, but never payed attention to him after the first 2 weeks. We did the homework problems and learned how to do them from the solutions manual. The tests was easier than our homework and we all got A's. One of my friends only showed up once/twice a week too.

Warning: Don't take this class unless...

Don't get me wrong, Prof. Kang is a great guy, but he is no accounting professor. He'd make a great mentor, because he's such a motivational speaker. Everyday he says something encouraging to his students. Sometimes, his "encouraging lectures" run through the entire class period. He gets through about one homework problem a day. Unfortunately, I usually leave his class MORE confused than when I entered the class.

He loves his job and accounting very much, it truly shows, but he doesn't know how to teach. He has a tendency to make things more difficult than they really are. So if you already understand how to get the right answer, it's best you ignore him, otherwise you'll just screw yourself up.

Unless you have friends who have taken his class in the past, and have old exams to maybe review from, you will get a bad grade. His reviews before the exam are so vague and broad, you'll end up studying everything, not knowing what is more important. Just thinking about his class again makes my head spin.

I recommend not taking this class unless you have no other alternative or you're very smart or have outside help. Otherwise, good luck -- you'll need it.

Tip: Bring a comfy pillow or a nice magazine to class.

Can't get worst than this!

Kang is by far the worst professor I've ever had. I enrolled in Acct 101 during the winter with Wagner who taught us very well. Unfortunately due to low enrollment our class had to be combined with the evening class taught by Kang. Wagner graciously allowed Kang to take over. Acct 101 was a 4 hour long class (Mon-Thurs) during Winter Session. Kang spent about 3.5 hours each day boasting about himself and his achievements. He's a rocket scientist from Korea, he's a human resources specialist, his family has lots of money so he doesn't care about money, he's top notch accounting teacher, etc. He favored talking about the preditorial behavior of tigers above all else. "You, my little scholars must act like a tiger" or "You're a piece of joke". His exams are relatively easy so if you're looking for an easy class, this is it. You WON'T learn anything but you'll pass with minimal effort. It's a shame SFSU allows professors like him to teach. He's a nice person but I'm here to learn.

Good teacher with heart

Kang is a pretty simple person to read. "Simple stupid" like he says. Do the homework and study them for the exam which you can't fail at all unless you don't go.

His English is sometimes hard to understand, and you can kinda tell that he has some trouble expressing himself sometimes, so thats why the words he says sometimes come out a little harsh. His intentions are good, and he really wants to help his students. He does not put a high focus on grades, although he does value learning a lot being a scholar and all.

Also his stories about korea and his college experience is interesting.... the first time around. then it gets repetitive. I think he teaches the same course for too long and forgets who he tells the story to.

He is not as bad as what the previous reviews have said. I actually enjoy listening to his lectures because most of what he saids are words of wisdom. I managed to come up with a list of words that you are most likely to hear everyday in his lectures :-) ... (1)Tiger Woods (2)C.E.O. (3)Golf (4)Scholars (5)P.H.D. (6)College (7)Persperation (8)S.F.S.U. (9).COM (10)Common!!! You got to be kidding!!!

A teacher with easy midterms.

Dr. Kang is probably the easiest accounting teacher there is at SFSU. It's true, most of his lecture's are comprised of life stories and "motivation" speeches. So be prepared. Although i dont advise anyone to miss class, attending his class is a waste of time, you learn absolutely nothing from it. I can honestly say, I missed his class almost everyday, but managed to pass his mid-terms. The mid-terms are very fair. Perhaps the most straight forward midterms i've ever seen...So honestly, i would recomend Dr. Kang to any student who wishes to pass accounting the first time around.

Does Kang=boring in Korean?

I think Prof. Kang thinks he is teaching high school or junior high students. He lectures as though we are in a remidial course. His exams are so easy that they should not even be iven. I truly dreaded his lectures, filled with numerous anecdotes of his career not as an IT professional but as a student. He would drone on endlessly about his docoral studies @ U of Texas and his two page term paper. Good story to hear once, but every week? I think not.

Prof. Kang took over this class after Blank's death so it is somewhat understandable that he would initially be ill prepared. However as the course went on there was no direction as to what would come next.A thoroughly disappointing experience.

King of Boasters

He was just fooling around. He couldn't teach at all. In his class, he always boasted of himself. Saying that he was a rocket designer when he was in high school. Also saying that the he taught accounting was like how Tiger Woods played golf. Everyone was so confused about his mind. He couldn't explain homework problems well. Anyway, if you take his course, you wouldn't learn anything.

An Egoist

There is a lot of disparity in reviews with regard to this teacher. He talks a lot in class about himself during lectures, hoping to inspire students, I presume. Unfortunately, I found it to be a major distraction from the lectures, since his digressions take up a lot class time. This class is relatively easy as long as you do your work.

Dr. Jai Kang was a refreshing accounting instructor. He has a great personality and very lively attitude. I recommend this instructor to anyone. He may go off on tangents, but nevertheless, they're interesting. He gives every student the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, I've noticed in passed reviews, Accounting & Finance majors have a dislike of his teaching tactics. I personally don't have any problem. I took Dr. Kang over the Summer of 1999. We had 2 exams, (worth up to 100 points each) the final, (worth up to 200 points) and labwork and a 2 page paper (worth up to 50 points each). All the exams were based on the homework and some readings (which he recommended). So do the problems and read what he recommends, if you don't have a clue, go to the Accounting lab and get some tutoring also you can get a copy of the answer key at the lab. Although, he does go over the problems, so one way or the other you'll get the answer. The labwork was easy! I can't stress this enough, study the homework and you'll get a good grade for the course. There was homework nearly every day. Dr. Kang did make the course interesting although he maybe a little narcissistic. He's very easy to understand and very enthusiastic. The one down fall for Dr. Kang is his excessive verbalization of his own life. But you can't have everything! I guess he's proud of himself and his accomplishments and who better to pat yourself on your back than YOU! YOU DESERVE BABY! He treated everyone with respect and dignity. You'll enjoy him.

OK, I agree, Prof. Kang likes to tell stories about his past experiences and achievements. He is very sweet and he really means well. Sometimes he tells the stories just to show off, but most of the time he wants us to follow his example. Some people do resent that - so if you are one of those people, you are not going to like him. I found him very amuzing...

Don't bother to read the book, only read those parts that he suggest that you read for the exam on his review sessions. Do all the homework problems and make sure that you understand them and can solve them on your own. On the exams he gives very similar problems. Don't worry if your writing skills are fair, because he hardly reads the essay questions. Even people who cannot write at all got a full credit on those questions. Make sure that you attend all the review sessions - they are crucial. There you can ask him to go over anything that you don't understand. Plus he will give you very narrow study guidelines - that'll save you a lot of time.

EXAMS are easy! Good luck. :-)

I don't know if this professor is really crazy or not...it is simple: if you want to pass acc 101 to go on upper level business class, take him, and you will not regret. If you are accounting major and want to learn something about accounting, don't even bother to look at his name. You don't learn anything from him but something from your own study on the HW. He is the easiest teach i ever had at SFSU, and his lecture really bored the hell out of the class. He always talked about his life theory and some stupid stuffs about his working experience in Korea..something like watching playboy magazine and his CEO experience...I don't learn anything and still get A on his test, which is good...

He's quite easy. exams are directly from homework . Just make sure you go throught them 5 or more times. His tests usually have 5 questions. He use to give partial credit, but stopped. So if you screw up just a little, he'll take 20 pts off for that one question. ( grade B) So double cheak anwsers. He spends 30 min doing homework on the board, and the last hour talking about himself. He's very kind . No homework-ever. Just a few weeks in computer lab. 2 midterms 20% each. and one non comprehensive final 40% of grade. My fina; had about 10 questions. Half were questions like 2nd midterm

Other reviews of Kang are so right about him wasting class time to spill out pointless philospohical theories and boasts of his life acheivements, or of his daughters' acheivements. In a fifty min span, he usually worked on one problem from the homework and spent the rest of the time talking nonsense. This was when the whole class would just tune him out. This is also why many students felt it unnecessary to attend class. I only recommended his class to friends because his exams were straight off homework problems he reviewed in class, and the fact that he gave partial credit of around 40-50% of possible points just for answering the problem. But I have since heard that he stopped giving partial credit. I pretty much learned on my own from the textbook because I opted not to attend his lectures on "the tiger" or "my daughter at Yale". If anyone plans to continue on with finance or accounting, he is defintely not an instructor u want to take cuz u'll be left in the dust in ur following classes....

Professor Kang is a pretty good teacher. He follows the book the almost to the letter. Most students ignore his lecture and get upset when they don't pass the midterm. I personally don't feel that the book used in this course is worth the money or time to read. It is grossly outdated. Professor Kang did his best to make students good in business and school. By giving life examples, he proved how everything can be accomplished with hard work. If you want to learn modern techniques, I suggest you see which teacher has the most up to date book.

He is one of the excellent instructors that I have in SFSU. He uses to have a different method to teach, not the wway that is presenting in the textbook. I think his lecture is easy to follow. His exams are very easy because the materials that are on the exam are similar to the homework problems that he assigned, or directly from his lecture. If you feel you have a troble to pass Acct 101. This is the a class that you want to take.

I took Managerial Accouting (ACCT101) with Dr. Kang the summer of 1998. He is a highly-spirited professor, optimistic, and, as the other comment posted on 11/08 says, someone who indulges in his life stories. While the time he spends on lecture does not cover the entire class period, the content of the lecture serves well to those who have already prepared for the scheduled section of the reading. As someone who would like or will take his class, you should know that he knows the material, but will not spend much of the class time to cover every detail. You should be prepared to go to his office and ask him questions rather than wait for him to cover the book sections every class.

Dr. Kang emphasizes on problem solving in terms of numbers and calculations. If you are proficient with math and computations, the only material you should be concerned about are the variables you can calculate for (ie. Marginal cost, overhead, fixed cost). If you are not proficient with math, practice the homework problems...(the calculations are not complex, rather repetitive in the sense that if you practice, you'll be doing the same calculations on the test). It's not rocket science.

Final suggestion: if accounting is not your major, take him; if it is, you might want to take someone else who will offer you more hardcore accounting material.
