Easy class - sit back, relax, and enjoy the pr0n

My third and last review on Leroux. Leroux is taking over the legacy that DeCecco began with the "Variations" course. Variations was an interesting class to say the least. You'd be hard pressed to find a student at State who hasn't at least heard some of what goes on in this class. As the semester went on, there were a lot more guest speakers and films shown, so there was less time to hear about lectures. Much of class consisted of hearing about our reactions to a certain topic/film that was shown or discussed previously, which led to a lot of heated, and often entertaining, debate. As with his other classes, his lectures can be thought-provoking, allowing you to see different sides of an issue. There are plenty of options for extra credit, ranging from attending workshops, participating in surveys/research projects, or being on a discussion panel. The multiple choice midterm and final were graded on the curve. And in a class with hundreds of students--with the ease of being able to skip class often--suffice to say, the curve was set pretty low.

A good lecturer, but an easy 'A'.

Not for the flower children . . .

Leroux knows his material and conveys it very well, in my opinion. He really understands that a theory is only relevant when placed in the correct context. He helped us to examine the personality of the theorists before discussing their theories. He is dynamic and pleasurable to listen to 80% of the time (blame the other 20% on evening-class fatigue). He doesn't patronize people with smiling and nodding and corrects you if you are looking at something from the wrong angle. Some people might find him blunt or terse but I would disagree. He is honest and knows that sometimes there IS a right answer. I thoroughly enjoyed his presence.

Theories was awful

LeRoux is a nice guy but his Theories class was awful! The material was often confusing (especially material covered for the 2nd & 3rd exam)and his lectures were even more confusing. I am sure he knows his stuff but it doesn't come across that way. The TA notes posted on his website were atrocious. Who ever was taking the notes didn't know what was going on either and had so many mispelled words it was embarrassing. The 1st test was clear and easy to understand, but the 2nd & 3rd were worded in a way that made them confusing.

To LeRoux's credit, he does grade on a curve and is eager to answer questions. The lectures are also available online, so if you cant make class you can watch it.

I took him for Sex & Relationships and really enjoyed the class, but this one was terrible.

Wonderful class/professor! Not for everyone.

Dr. LeRoux is a great person and an excellent teacher. I can understand why some people dislike his style of teaching, but I personally feel that it is very effective. It is obvious that Dr. LeRoux enjoys teaching and is very knowledgable regarding the subject of psychology. He often uses personal experiences and anecdotes to reinforce something he explains. This makes the material easier to understand and the lectures interesting, and often entertaining. He doesn't demand much of his students regarding assignments making this an excellent class for the responsible, laid back student (as opposed to stundents that enjoy frequent assigments/homework and a lot of structure).

Sweetie-rific

He's a very interesting lecturer. I'd go to class more often if it wasn't at 8am and I value sleep more than I do his lectures.

His class is pretty easy. He offers many opportunities for extra credit. So its very difficult not to do well in the course. If you volunteer to do class panels, you can raise your grade by one full grade.

You need to write 2 5-page papers. Make sure you follow the essay guidelines. There are 2 multiple choice tests that are taken from lecture material.

Overall, an interesting class however, I find it very annoying that he calls on people asking them personal questions like "how did you meet your sweetie?" What if I aint got no "sweetie". Who the hell calls your girlfriend or boyfriend sweetie anyway. Not I.

This is as simple as it gets

Having had Prof. Leroux for a previous Psych course (Theories of Personality), I enrolled in his class, already familiar of his teaching ability and grading policies. He has a website in which he has someone post up notes (either his own or one by his TAs). The course could not be any easier for someone who would rather sleep in then get up in the morning to go to his 8 a.m. class. The one (and only) lecture I actually sat in on (the day I added), was fairly boring and a bit personalhe was asking people at random whether or not they masturbated. Although this is a sex and relationships class and you do have the choice to turn down any questions (Which we all know, shows an admission of guilt, anyway! Hehe), I still believe those questions are a bit intrusive and should be left to those who voluntarily want to admit that info. (Hint: If you sit in the front, youre more likely to get picked on.)

Because of this and the time at which this class was offered, I only came to class when it was exam time or when a paper was dueand even then, I only needed to hand my paper to one of the many TAs, which didnt require setting foot inside the auditorium where class was held. He offers so many chances for extra credit, that Im quite sure that one can get an F on both midterm and final, yet end up with a B in the class (maybe even an A).

This class is not very challenging. A lot of the concepts from the book and notes are common sense, and if youve taken Bio 330 - Human Sexuality, a lot of the topics should be a review for you. Had I not been in need of these 3 units this semester, I wouldve waited to take this class with Prof. Chen over the summer. I had her for Human Sexuality, and she at least makes class a lot more fun to go to.

I concur with the other reviewers in saying that Leroux is a good guy, but unfortunately, it doesn't always translate into being a good professor.

Its pretty sad when you can get a good grade without having come to class.

Good personality, bad grading policy

In the overall grade, I was going to give Dr. Leroux a B-. But I really dont feel like he deserves it. This class is really easy. If you really know the trick. And because I am nice, here it is: DO A LOT or do ALL OF EXTRA CREDIT HE GIVES OUT!! And check out his site because he has the outline of his lectures on there. So, even if you don't go to his classes, you'll find the panel discussions and class outlines on there.

Anyway, even if I did not go to most of the classes except the dates he gives out exams, I still got a B. And I really think I could've gotten an A if I only knew that having GOOD grades on your exams will NOT ensure you an A. THis is why i really dont like how LEroux grades because I truly think it's unfair. Even though I know that I did not really try my very best to get an A in this class because I didn't go the classes, I think that his grading process in unfair because if the only way you can get an A in a class is to get a perfect score on EVERY exam OR do all the stupid extra credits, then it is NOT a good class after all. To REALLY EARN one's grades, I think it should be because the person LEARNED the material and NOT because he/she filled out a stupid survey questionnaire (aka extra credit points). So, Dr. Leroux, if you're reading this, pls give your future students a favor. DO GIVE them extra credits, but pls do it accordingly! If you think that your exams are really really hard, then give a LOT of extra credit points. But your class really isn't that hard! The concepts really are "common sense." If you're a normal human being, really you can get a minimum B if you take that class. But if you're a student and you want an easy A. Take this class. It would be somewhat interesting but just learn from my mistake-Do the extra credits.

*** A+ Teacher ***

If you want to take HMSX 320, TAKE THIS TEACHER. Professor Leroux gives 2 term paper (which is really easy) about sex and relationships. All you have to is to write about what he asked then you're received up to 50 point each paper (total of 100) There is 2 exams (100 points possible) There are TONS of extra credit opportunity that adds up to about (60-70 points), so even if you messed up on the exams(s) or a paper, you will still have a good chance of getting an A!

THIS IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST TEACHERS I HAVE EVER HAD. EVENTHOUGH HIS LECTURES WERE 3 HOURS LONG THEY WERE IN FACT NOT BORING. HE KEPT ME INTERESTED AND LAUGHING THE WHOLE TIME. I LOOKED FORWARD TO HIS CLASS EVERY WEEK. IN ADDITION, HIS LECTURES ARE ENGAGING IN THAT THEY MAKE YOU EVALUATE YOUR LIFE AND GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHO YOU ARE. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO ANYONE. HE IS THE BEST!

cool teacher, long class

the teacher is cool, he likes to crack jokes during class. however the class is 3 hours long and that is way too long. i often found myself wanting to goto sleep, or just leaving halfway through the lecture. the tests are hard so study a lot.

Good prof., if you like long lectures

I enjoyed LeRoux's class on Theories of Personality. Although in a 3-hr. class, his lectures may get a bit dull, he does offer good examples (often drawing from his own real-life experiences) in helping to get us to understand the different theorists. After class, I was convinced that the theorist that we learned about that week, was the most believable...until the next class meeting, when I thought that the next theorist seemed more believable than the last. He sometimes throws jokes in between, a lot of them sexual (which at first, made me see him as a perv., only to realize that it does have at least some relevance to his lecture on that particular theorist, e.g. Freud). He hands out a study guide for each test (2 midterms, 1 final-not cum.), which helped greatly in getting a high score. If you can stand long, drawn out lectures and would like to learn about different theorists, I recommend Prof. LeRoux. I did notice that many people did not show up to class each week, since he does post transcripts (recorded from previous lectures) on his site, which make it easy to pass the tests without even showing up to class.

An Awesome teacher!

This class is great. The teacher is great. I highly recommend this class. We had 2 papers, where you have to pick a chapter out of your book and analyze it, and 1 midterm and a final.(50 questions each) Besides that, you are going to have extra credit assinments are available for you all the time. Just by doing a study guide you can get 2 extra credits per chapter. So, if you didn't do too well on the exams and a paper, you have more than 40 extra credits available for you during the semester. The teacher also has all his notes on the web, and he uses only his notes when he makes the exams. His website is great. You can see all your grades and everything else on there. I would highly recommend this class.

Will make you think critically

I thought Dr. LeRoux was a very good teacher. He presents each theory/theorist as if he believes it and it's the ultimate truth. This enables the students to really "try it on for size" and see if it works for them. He encourages and promotes critical thinking. Yes, some of his jokes can be off-colored but they don't cross the line of being totally inappropriate. Overall, he is a smart teacher who gets you to really think about things, rather than be a passive observer.

Don't fall asleep

Mr. Leroux is a nice enough fellow. He has a crude sense of humor. He likes seeing Debra Winger Naked. Yuk! He is a long winded lecturer but there is very little homework and tests are usually multiple choice. They are difficult because he seems to think you should memorize his lectures. I do think that he enjoys teaching and has good intentions. But he is unorganized and forgetful and often covers the same material twice. He grades on a curve. He is available to discuss problems and tries to be helpful. Still his lectures are just that lectures. I had to pinch myself to stay awake.

Good Guy, Bad Teacher

Very nice guy. Seems to have a real ability to grasp the philosophical aspects of theories, but was amiss on some of the facts. There was a lack of organization within the course. No text was required, no real reading assignments given - basically just some that were suggested. Lectures were long and often difficult to follow. Tests asked questions that we weren't prepared for as students because of the lack of homework and guidance for what to study outside of class. It was too laid back, too easy to get an A you don't earn, and too dull. He's obviously a very intelligent person but not a great teacher. I wouldn't repeat this experience.

This class should be a required course for all Psychology majors.Leroux has brought the major theories of personality (e.g., Freud, Jung, Adler) into focus for me for the first time. He argues each of the theories as if they were the "real" truth, and allows you to make up your own mind! He knows his subject matter inside and out and is able to answer questions in a highly competent and thoughtful way. Finally, a teacher who can expand and improve upon what is written in the text! You should definitely take this class.

Professor Leroux is really nice and so I hate to give him such a bad grade, but he isn't very good at teaching. That makes it even sadder because I think that he likes teaching a lot. The problem is that the class is way too easy and unchallenging. I'm getting an A for no work at all and I haven't learned a thing from him. I'm really really worried about how I'm going to do on the G.R.E. because of teachers like him. He is an easy A and if you need that with no work, this is the class for you. The only way you could get less than a B is if you refuse to take the exams or if you have a language problem or something like that. This is not a class that requires you to do hardly a thing. But Professor Laroux is really nice and a wonderful person. He's really sweet.

THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS CLASS IS THE TEACHER WHO TEACHES IT! DR. LEROUX IS FUNNY AND PERSONABLE. HE MAKES LEARNING ABOUT PERSONALITY THEORIES INTERESTING. HE CHALLENGED US WITH HIS EXAMS AND ENTERTAINED US WITH HIS LECTURES. HE ALSO COVERS NON-TRADITIONAL PERSONALITY THEORIES WHICH I LIKED A LOT. HE SUPPLEMENTS THE READINGS WELL, AND REALLY CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. HE WILL KKNOW WHO YOU ARE EVEN IF YOU HAVE NEVER INTRODUCED YOURSELF. WHEN MAKING UP EXAMS, HE IS VERY LENIANT AND LEAVES IT UP TO THE STUDENT TO GET IT DONE BEFORE THE SEMESTER ENDS. DR. LEROUX TREATS STUDENTS LIKE COLLEGE STUDENTS SHOULD BE TREATED. HE DOESN'T FIGURE ATTENDANCE INTO YOUR GRADE. IT IS UP TO YOU TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LECTURES AND READ. DR. LEROUX RESPECTS HIS STUDENTS. THIS CLASS CONSISTED OF 2 MIDTERMS, AND A TAKE-HOME FINAL. IF YOU WANT TO WORK HARD TO BETTER YOUR GRADE, YOU CAN WRITE A TERM PAPER. DR. LEROUX IS A FANTASTIC TEACHER WHO IS REALLY THERE FOR HIS STUDENTS.

This is the sort of teacher I came to college to find. He is focused on understanding human beings rather than on grades and being punitive towards students. His lectures are fascinating and humane. His tests are kind of boring - they are multiple choice and focus on facts which is not how he teaches the class. But I would not want to change anything about the class.

I want to say nice things about him because he's a sweetheart, but he's not a good teacher. He is completely unchallenging. He's great for the GPA that needs help and I he's very friendly and kind, but he isn't a good teacher. A lot of the stuff he says about the theorists weren't right./ When I would read the original sources, they'd say the opposite of what he said they said sometimes. Also, he seems to need to feel liked a lot, A LOT, which is going to get his feelings hurt one of these days. He's a great guy but not a good teacher.

Proffesor Leroux is one of the best proffesors I have had here at STate. He is positive, comical, and best of all you can tell that he likes to teach. His lectures for the most part held my interest. On a few occasions I wished that they could be a little more interesting. He is a very approachable proffessor and makes it known that he is available to talk during his office hours, about psychology or even what direction your life is going. His tests are multiple choice and there is a take home final. His grading system is fair. If you are looking for an interesting class and for a few laughs I suggest that you take Leroux.

Dr. LeRoux is a very nice person and what's surprising is no matter how much you skip his class or how much you hate his lecture, he knows your name. I skipped most of his lecture, and yet he knew me by my first name, which tremendously surprised me. He was generous about giving good grades, and I really do appreciate it. Unfortunately, his speaking technique could be better...

Dr. Leroux has a wonderful personality -- he is entertaining and friendly. Unfortunately, he's not a very good instructor. I found his lectures extremely dull and often in conflict with the text. I'm not sure that he has a good grasp of the material. He certainly doesn't expect his students to have a good grasp -- he gives very easy multiple choice tests. The semester I had him, the finals were take-home multiple choice! It's almost impossible to get less than an A in his courses, so if your GPA needs a boost, go to his classes. Also, he's very open during his office hours -- you can learn a lot from his anecdotes (he has many), but always check his facts.

Whether a Psychology major or not, this is a class that I would recommend to anyone. LeRoux makes the lectures very interesting with his comedic personality. The grading system is very traditional. There is a multiple choice exam after each section that covers exactly what was discussed in lecture. There is very little or not reading required for this class. I would encourage anyone to take a class with Mr. LeRoux.

I have mixed feelings about professor Leroux. He is an extremly nice guy, very funny and entertaining. However these qualities do not necessarily make for a great teacher. The material covered in the class consists of the major psychological theorists and their theories. I found the instructor's presentations of some of the theorists engaging. But mostly, I questioned how well the instructor actually understood the material himself. Many of the theories were presented in vague terms, which made them difficult for students to grasp. The class consists of two midterms and a final, and overall I feel that his tests are far too easy. I did not find this class challenging, and that is, after all, why many of us are in school. I feel that he does not expect enough of his students. Again, I will say that the instuctor is an extremely nice guy, and if you are looking for an easy class that is somewhat entertaining, yoiu may want to check it out. However, serious students should stay away.

There is something captivating about Dr. LeRoux' lectures that keeps people attending lecture. His midterms are multiple choice, but take time to research (6+ hours). The essay questions make you think, and should include ideas covered in the class. I recommend taking his lecture, you'll know more, especially because he uses real life bay-area studies as examples. He has plenty of life experience for his examples, from graduate school psychology experiments, to his time as a security guard in a mental hospital. I can't give him an A, then you'll all take his classes! His best advice is Have Fun. Taken seriously, it forces you to re-evaluate certain situations. So, HAVE FUN!
