SUPER teacher

good teacher! you DONT need the book. just attend class, listen and write down what he puts on the board. everything comes straight from his lectures. 4 midterms, 10-12 m/c and 4 short answer which are usually graphs. he does give study guides for each test.

One of the best econ professors at SFSU!!!

I had a horrible experience when I took ECON 100 with Prof. Le, but after taking Prof. Mar's ECON 101 class, I never knew how simple economics can be. He lectures in a way where you can grasp the point in a second. His class consisted of 4 midterms (12 multiple choice questions and 2 short essays) and a final exam (20 multiple choice questions and 4 short essays). Although he tells you to buy the book, I don't think it's necessary to buy it because his tests all come from his notes. I never read the book and I still got an A in his class. Because of him, I can apply the points he taught in the long-run and remember them forever. I guarantee that you will like his class. He is one of the best econ professors at SFSU!!!

Take him...you will learn and ace this class.

I took his class Spring 03'. His lectures are well organized and he follows his semester plan perfectly. The exams were consisted of 4 midterms and a final. Each midterm is worth 15% and comprehensive final weights 40%. This sounds harsh, but it is not. The exams are mostly multiple choices and a few short essay questions. He always gives a review sheet and goes over one class before exam so make sure to attend that time. And Dr. Mar tells you what would be on the exams during his lectures. Don't bother buying the textbook because he explains everything in lectures and the exams are based on the lectures. Make sure to get a copy of a note if you miss a class. One thing, although he sometimes makes a funny face, dont let it fool you. I gurantee you would do well in his class if you go to a class or have the lecteure notes. I am really glad I took his class because I learned A LOT about Intro Microeconomics.

(BUSINESS STUDENTS---If you like his way of teaching, I recommend to take BA 412 with Prof. Uday. They have very similar teaching style)

About prof.mar

Mar is a very good professor. He knows his stuff and conveys it well. He expects a lot of participation from his class and he won't just go around giving answers all the time. This helped me tremendously because it actually made me think about the issue at hand a lot more. And with Econ, you need to develop your analytical skills.

Book is a bit of a waste of time (he even says so himself...sort of). I didn't use it much. Some kids I knew never used it and still got good grades.

5 exams (4 mids and 1 final)...60% multiple choice, the rest short essays. Not hard if you attend class everyday.

The note taking for this class is pretty extensive so try your best to show up everyday. Dr.Mar is very energetic and enthusiastic which makes for a very interesting and meaningful class. I highly recommend him.

makes econ easy for you

TAKE NOTES!!! he takes test questions from the notes.. you dont even have to read the book, he lays it out for you on the board, all you need to do is just copy it... he'll even give you a review sheet before the exam... the review sheets help A LOT coz they're almost the same as the test itself... i definitely recommend him for ECON 101

Professor Mar...the Only Choice!

I would strongly recommend Prof. Mar's ECON 101 class to anyone! He gives structured, informative and energetic lectures. His tests are very fair and are based primarily on lecture material. And to top it all off, he is always willing to answer any questions outside of class. It should also be noted that I never used the book, so think twice before buying it. Just a side note, I would also recommend Prof. Mar as an advisor for any Econ Majors. He really knows his stuff!

Lectures well

Overall a great teacher and explained everything very well. It was kind of a difficult topic for me so I wasn't doing too well reading from the book. All the midterms were ok, not too hard not too easy. I was getting all B's from all exams but the cumulative final was a total killer. Its what brought me down to a C level. Good teacher, explains things well. The final was hard as hell, even for someone who had all B's on all the previous exams.

Intelligent, Enthusiastic, and Humble; Why can't they all be like him?!?

Prof. Mar's exams reflect everything in his lecture so this is a very straight-forward, won't keep you guessing kind of instructor. You can also tell that he is interested in what he teaches because he doesn't drone, but rather, tries to get his points across to students in a non-condescending way, an attribute that some professors here lack. And don't worry about those teacher's pets...we all get equal treatment in his class.

Economics, the clear way

Dr.Mar puts his best effort into making the subject clear as possible, by using several life applicable examples and reviewing some of the basic mathematical concepts, if necessary. Every lecture, he writes the topic to be covered on the board, and he goes through every major points step by step. His lectures are very interesting, and he speaks loud, which helps you stay up in the class. And his exams are fair:) I highly recommand him to any econ majors.

Work Hard For This Class

This professor has tricky exams, so if you make silly mistakes on multiple choice questions (like me), then try someone else. He has pretty good lectures, and explains things thoroughly. If you want a good grade for Econ. 101, you're going to have to work really hard and prepare yourself for a few crucial multiple choice questions and 3-4 short answer questions per exam.

A great teacher

Mar is a great professor. His lectures are clear and concise and he's always ready to answer questions. He often tries to interact with everyone in class. Also, he often ties in the current issues with the economic topics that he covers which made his lectures very interesting. There are 5 midterms and a final, which are all based on his lectures. Thus, as long as you study and you're a good note taker, you'll pass. Overall, two thumbs up for Mar.

Great math teacher.

Dr. Mar, is an excellent teacher of mathematics. He made the material approachable, something which the text failed to do. Every lecture was preceded by an outline and a review of the previous lecture's material.

His tests where fair and usually consisted of modified homework problems. He provided most of the formulas for the exams, which was almost unnecessary, because of the thoroughness of his lectures.

He made the material more approachable by drawing on the prerequisite courses, which I rarely see done in my other classes.

There were 2 exams and the final and 8 homework assignments. He was always available in his office hours, and was willing to help in whatever ways he could.

The book sucked, but Dr. Mar did an excellent job.
