STAY AWAY!! DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THE OTHER REVIEWS SAY!!
*****Please note: I had to change the grade from 'F' to 'D-' just so the review would show up.
I don't know how anyone could possibly give Jane Martin anything higher than an 'F-'. She is the most horrible teacher EVER. She does not care that students are failing the class, and that by the second week of class, 1/3 of the students already drop out. The highest grade anyone can hope for is a 'C-' (although she curves the grades, if you get an 'F' on the test, you will still get an 'F' even after the curve, so don't rely on the curve to bring up your grade).
She does not go over anything clearly and rushes through all her lectures. She teaches this "general" class at an advanced rate for some reason. The book is almost as useless as she is. She also gets PISSED (not just angry) if people start asking her questions: She will glare at you, let out a loud sigh, roll her eyes and then tell you that she doesn't want to answer your question. Also, don't bother asking her for help (i.e. extra credit, tutoring). I know A NUMBER of people who have gone to her and all she told them was to drop out (of the class?) because she didn't want to help them. Martin even once told a student that someone had to take her seven times (which, apparently is normal) and she had a proud look on her face. As a matter of fact, some people take her so often, the class becomes like a home away from home. When I took this class (which I will regret for the rest of my life), during the second day of class, I noticed that Martin was already calling people by their name. I thought maybe she had a super good memory, but it turns out that those people had already taken her several times; that's how Martin knew them so well.
Even advisors HATE her. I know one advisor who wrote a "nasty letter" (her words, not mine) to the chemistry department complaing to them about students who HAVE TO go to Berkeley, San Jose State University, etc. just to be able to pass this class. The chemistry department was supposed to fire Martin this semester, but she must have thrown a fit, because she is back again, terrorizing the students yet again.
If you don't mind staying in school an extra four years, then go ahead and waste your life in Martin's class.
Also, don't bother buying the piece-of-junk textbook. All I got out of it was a twisted ankle.
These other reviews were written several years ago, so maybe she was a good "teacher" at one point, but she is definitely not worth a penny of your time. Go to San Jose State University and take Dr. Daryl Eggers. He is literally the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of Jane Martin. He actually makes sure people understand what he teaches and you actually learn and understand most of what he says (it's like a MIRACLE). It may be more expensive, BUT if you think about it, taking Dr. Eggers only once and passing with a 'B' will set you back $800, but if you take Martin a minimum of seven times, you will have wasted more than $14,000 just to fail ONE CLASS. You do the math...
NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO SUFFER THROUGH THIS CLASS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED..........
