average teacher

Dr. Marzke has a great personality. I find him to be a very personable teacher. His lectures on the other hand are hit and miss. Sometimes things make sense and other times it is extremley confusing. I struggled understanding his lectures because his teaching style is really fast, and he assumes an understanding of things, that might not always be there. He is extremeley approachable though. His office hours are very productive and informative. He is patient and will explain things until you understand it. I only wish his lectures were clearer so office hours wouldn't be so crucial.

A gifted teacher...

An exceptional teacher who makes his class "personal" despite 100+ students in each section. He really takes the time to teach concepts rather than memorizing equations, and this is reflected in his exams. "Cheat sheets" are allowed for each exam, yet the average scores on the tests were around 60% for my section (don't worry, it's a curved class). A good suggestion is to make your cheat sheet well in advance of any tests so you have time to refine it and review anything you are not confident about. I highly recommend taking any class taught by this professor; teachers of this quality are few and far inbetween at any school.

Committed to helping students learn, an effective and approachable teacher!

Dr. Marzke is knowledgeable, approachable, and enthusiatic about physics. His committment to helping his students learn is commendable, as well as his ability to remember student names! He enjoys teaching and makes physics interesting with visual demos when appropriate. He is very available at office hours and help sessions. His exams are challenging, but the practice exams gives you adequate preparation. However, due to the conceptual nature of the subject, this was a class I really had to put time into to piece everything together. I truly have a greater understanding and appreciation for physics because of this class. Dr. Marzke is really there for his students and an effective teacher.

Physics made easy

Dr Marzke presented the material in a way that catered to us non-physics majors. The focus was conceptual without alot of math. I took Physics I elsewhere and believe me it was beyond hard. While this class was no piece of cake, it was not beyond understanding. I enjoyed it. The homework wasn't all that difficult (come on, all word problems have to take some time to figure out) and the tests were always much easier then the homework, just watch out for careless mistakes...other then that, it was great. Study the chapters thoroughly, don't read it like a novel. Attend lectures. That's it.

Clear, helpful and available!!

OUTstanding, helpful, clear and highly available! The most accessible and helpful teacher, with FOUR help sessions per week, one which is led personally by him, three office hours that he is always there for and includes everyone who drops in on. Homework isn't easy, usually quite long, but he will help you get the answers, except you have to figure out how to get there, which is where you get the points. Tests are long but you get to take in one cheat sheet for the first one, two for the second and three for the final! With that said, all I did was make photocopies of the problems in the book (sorry Ron!) and take them in with me. I did well and I'm happy to have had him as a teacher!!
