I had Janet Newman for english 414. I thought that she was pretty neutral. I think that she was a pretty fair teacher. She do not mark you down tremenously if you didn't satisfy the full requirements for the essays. But I also felt that it wasn't easy to get an A on her essays. She is somewhat a hard grader in that area. But she was nice and understanding.

I wouldn't say prof. newman was a horrible teacher, but a lot of her lectures seemed super useless. she would assign 7-8 essays, but doesn't speak much about it. she makes everyone group up every now and then so she doesn't have to teach us. I would recommend this teacher to those who are extremely independent and willing to work with no given direction.

My main complaint with the class would have to be the essay topics - by-the-book controversy - race, gender, the environment and technology. She assigns a lot of busy work related to reading and grammar, and wastes class time with endless small-group discussions. She covers the material well, but never enough to actually write a cohesive essay. She doesn't really support others whose views differ from her own. She has a strong, but not comprehensive grasp on grammar, as she cannot answer some student questions. Typical for an English class, but more boring than most. C-

When I first took English 50, Newman seemed hard because it was my first semester in college. When you get use to her, the work she gives is doable. She gives out tons of handouts and information to help you on your essay. Although she is VERY picky, she meets with each student individually to give feed back on their essay. She's not a friendly teacher or someone you might hang out with. She looks very gloomy and is not energetic or jokable at all. She has a monotone voice that becomes boring after a while. She rarely lets the class leave early, but she's very professional and organized. If you take her class, you'll have a very strong foundation in English. She's a tough grader, but the grade she gives you won't affect your GPA since ENG50 remedial so it doesn't matter.

Janet Newman is a demanding teacher when it comes to writing. She has the class writes 7 essay in which the last 4 are graded. She is very picky with what she wants and expects. The best part about her class is she gives excellent feedback to help better your writing. One other downfall is that her essay topics arent the best. I learned a lot and did improve my writing. Overall she is a pretty good teacher.
