I really have no qualms with Mr. Nutting. He's got a dry, subtle sense of humor, and is hardly boring. Sure, he is fairly cynical, but he doesn't seem to make a big deal out of it. It's like his philosophy is like "reality is crap, but hey, try to make the best of it".
As for his teaching abilities, I HIGHLY appreciate how he moderates discussions. Sure he is always entitled to his opinions, but he keeps them unbiased, and he doesn't preach them (unlike other teachers I can think of).
I have no regrets in taking this class, and if you somehow can get into any of his classes, go for it! You probably won't regret it either.

Prof. Nutting designed the class to make student critically think about moral and political issues. The class discussions are really interesting and many different viewpoints are welcomed. There's lots of reading but the subjects are interesting. I highly recommend this professor.

FINALLY-- a professor who understands the fine line between presented personal opinion and dangerous indoctrination-- bravo If you truely want to learn HOW to think and not WHAT to think about difficult moral issues of today- take this teacher. Don't let his shleppy hippy look fool you- he is actually an intelligent, witty attorney who never once told anyone that their personal opinion was wrong. But he isnt completely passive either, often interjecting a point for the student to think about (though never saying his point is more valid) and his biting sarcasm DOES NOT get old "real fast"-- its subtle and hilarious.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, he's not a horrible teacher, but personality wise, he's rather unpleasant, which seeps into his teaching. He's not personally offensive, but the snide remarks and over-bearing sarcasm get old, FAST.
The grading is confusing and the book is awkward and boring. It's good to know that he uses a book you have to buy from an independant bookstore, not supplied or bought back from the campus bookstore.

DO NOT TAKE NUTTING! He will absolutely bore you out of your wits. He uses mediocre material (one lousy book that's written by a horrible academic). He's not energetic and lacks personality. You will not learn anything and will just end up being frustrated because you forgot to drop the class before the deadline. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way because I know for a fact that the majority of my class panned this guy when it came to evaluations. I'M SURPRISED THEY DIDN'T FIRE HIM, which then allows him to drain some more payroll. If you want to take an interesting philosophy class, ask around and get someone with a name and reputation. Don't get stuck with this no named, non-skilled amateur.
