DIFFICULT SUBJECT...TEACHER COULD BE WORSE...

So here's the deal, obviously the person that wrote the review BELOW MINE received an A in the class.... only someone that received an A would write such a positive review....

But now it's time to get a review from someone who is average and almost DIDN'T pass his class...

Professor Ozluk definitely knows his stuff, however he teaches at a fast pace and doesn't really slow down if the class isn't comprehending. He acts like he is trying to slow down but really you can sense his frustration and you begin to see his bad attitude and this can at times become discouraging. He hates it when people talk in class, but again, who doesn't? He makes himself readily available during office hours, so I guess that's a PRO. So let's talk about classwork...

Homework: Is assigned, however he DOES NOT collect it, and barely goes over it, he will, if you ask him to, but he will VERY briefly go over 1 or 2 of the problems. I never did the h.w. because i thought it didn't really relate to the way he taught. When he taught he made it seem easy, but when you looked at the H.W. you were kinda like, WTF? where do i begin?

Excel Projects (2): These were fairly easy. I hate excel, yet I managed to do these and got perfect scores on them, don't stress on these. He shows you how to do the first one during a computer lab training session. These were probably the easiest parts of his COURSEWORK.

Quizzes: There are about 4 quizzes, only 1 was in class and it happened right after you turned in the first project, it was basically questions re: EXCEL and how to interpret the graphs you made on the project. The other 3 quizzes were done on BLACKBOARD and were kinda hard, granted you were at home and had your book, but they ARE TIMED and you better be ready, because he knows that you're using the book, so he makes that $h!t HARD. I think for our class he dropped our lowest quiz score...

Tests: There are 3 exams. They ARE NOT multiple choice. They are hard lengthy problems that confuse the $h!t out of you. They have no relation to what he taught in class, (well they do) but trust me, your PAGE OF NOTES will not help you out much. He makes the problems really wordy and they are confusing. The good thing about his tests is the fact that he curves, but that's whack if some nerd hella gets an A, and totally screws up the curve....

I believe he broke down his grading system to this.... QUIZZES 10%, 2 EXCEL PROJECTS 10%, 3 TESTS 20% FOR THE FIRST 2, AND 40% FOR THE 3RD (which is a comprehensive final)

----overall----- he's a good teacher, he has hella attitude though, if you ask a dumb question he'll answer you with a smart ass answer and make you feel dumb. his tests are hard, but DO-able. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer and I practically failed all the exams or barely managed to get C- on them(because of the curve) and yet I managed to get a C in the class. I think he favors the people that participate and show up regularly. if he knows your name, that's a good sign. if you take him just know that his class is not the easiest, but you will pass if you try.

He makes statistics fun to learn even if you are not good with math

I read previous reviews posted from students about his personality and teaching approaches on DS412...sounds bad, but I can't comment about it since I did not take his DS412 class. I took DS212 with him and he is awesome lecturer. I am not good with math at all, but I have found him very helpful in making statistics fun and interesting to learn. He used one book that is extremely easy to understand. A good news for someone who has math-phobia. Prior class starts, he plays 3 - 5 pop music to cheer us up since his class took place in the afternoon, and many students would probably feel tired and sleepy. You will not get bored in his class because he makes statistics reasonably to follow and comprehend.

exam - He gives 3 exams, and offers 3 different grading scheme. He curved grade. exam 1(ch1-9), exam 2(ch14-17), final comprehensive although most questions will be focused more on topics after exam 1 and 2, which is ch18-22. Total # of exam Q: around 7 or 11 computations - show your workings. he is particularly stricted on this rule.

h/w - He went through difficult homework based on students request. It is highly recommended to do all assigned homework if you want to understand the topics and do well in exam. He provides solutions to all assigned homework at a later date (download online), but he won't give the answer earlier than that because he wants you do work on the solution yourself first. He is approachable, friendly, helpful if you show your effort to learn and willing to work hard. Seeing him during the office hours really helped. He has a very good responsive in communicating with u as long as you know what you want to ask him. During lectures, he also used book examples, as well as taking 2 or 3 review questions to do together in class. Plenty of class activity to participate. Most are fun to do. You won't realize how fast the time has passed in his class.

project - 2 take him project using excel to do charts and spreadsheet calculations. He gave excel orientation to make sure you don't have problem to do the project. If you have problems email or see him....always helpful and flexible for suggestion.

in-class and online blackboard quizzes - about 3 to 4 on each. In class quizzes is very short and easy. Online quizzes are combination of multiple choice and compuation that required to show your workings. Not difficult if you go through homework and read textbook. he would reconsider to give students a second-time arouod quiz again if most students do not do well on that quiz. A good chance to re-do and get a good quiz grade. How wonderful is that?

Exams - allow one sheet of formulas/notes.

response to your email fast. Make every mean to communicate with studetns well. Yes, he has an accent but he always try his very best to make you learn well in class.

ground rule - don't talk while he is talking. He does not sit well on that. come to his class regularly. he does not take attendance after 2 weeks of class started. But, if you attend his class, you learn better...especially when you begin to learn about probability (ch14-22)...better off to come to his class.

I would recommend students to take his class especially if you hate math, and prefer a good lecturer that provides good learning experiences. He is the one will help you to do just that. Take his class. You won't regret. This is the only first math class I have a 100% attendance...not because I have to attend the class, but mostly because it is fun to learn statistics in his class. Seriously consider taking DS212 with him.....don't let the comments on other students from DS412 to scare you off. I took his class this year in Spring 2006....I am now ready to take DS412 next.

Great Teacher

Please notice that all the evaluations of Ozgur were either A or F, which I think shows that you may either love his teaching style or not. For me, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and is the only teacher that can make me stay concentrated for 3 hours after a day of work. He is really well organized, prepared, always ready to answer questions. He does not move forward if somebody says that they do not understand. He creates a wonderful atmosphere and he is always in a good mood and full of energy. He is not a product of an American Education system, so he is a bit more strict when it comes to paying attention and keeping quiet. BA 412 is a hard class especially if you suck at math (Like I do). I got a C and it was exactly what I deserved. I can't say I was killing myself studying but I went to each class and did every other homework. He gives a short quizz at the end of each chapter which really help out. He is available for Office hourse at any time and will gladly help you with any problem you may have. If you take your education seriously then take this teacher. We all just want to pass sometimes but BA 412 is a hard class and if you want a good shot at it then take a teacher that will give his best to help you out like Ozgur.

DO NOT TAKE OZLUK

Avoid him if you can. BA 412 is a tough course but, it is even harder when the instructor can't teach. He plays favorites and if he likes you then he will answer your questions. If not then he'll respond with a rude comment usually. Also, he had posted additional office hours a week before the final but, when I tried to see him in his office he was never there.

Bad teacher

Please, please do not take this teacher if you want to learn and feel good about yourself. This teacher is unfair, unpredictable, has bad temper and rude. You can learn something from him but you have to be ready to work very, very, very hard. His syllabus does not reflect the reality, he is disorganized and does not follow what is stated in the syllabus. If you want to work hard and feel bad about yourself, take him!!!!

Great TEACHER

I like him. He is one of the best teacher that I have this semester, but sometimes he is rude/mean to other students who are asking too many questions.

The grading seems unfair to me because he deducts so many points on the exams. However, he gives partial credit for students who are at least trying to solve the problem. Therefore, it is very important not to leave any question BLANK.

Well .. overall I would say that Ozgur is a GREAT teacher ..! He is willing to help during his office hours.... and if you have quick question, you can email him and he will answer quite fast also.

Remember, in order to be successful in this class, DO NOT MISS A CLASS .... =) Trust me ... His projects are easy ... Tests are quite hard ... Final exam: Easyyyyy Quiz: Super HARDDDD <-- I Hate all the quizzes alrighty then ... Good Luck

Excellent Professor! Real World Applications

I usually hate any class that has mathematical calculations in it and I was expecting this one to be the same. But Prof. Ozluk is amazing! He explains the material in a way that relates to real world problems. His lectures are extremely organized and his class website is usually up to date with tools to help you on the assignments. The Bad he talks really fast and his tests are way too long to take in a 75 minute period. The class is hard but he makes it as easy as possible. Do yourself a favor and NEVER miss class. Because although he is thorough, hes quick and the one day I missed caused me great headaches. And yes, I think he did post his own review below... kind of obvious Ozgur :)

Model Teacher

OZLUK IS A MODEL TEACHER 1. He is fair 2. He will help you and is understanding 3. His tests are a direct reflection of assigned homework 4. He curves 5. He knows his stuff 6. He knows when a student has not made any sort of effort and doesn't waste class time dealing with them. I am certain that all the D and F grades for Ozluk came from students who made no sort of effort to do their homework. Of course you won't do well on the exams if you don't do the homework!

Take this teacher!!!!!

I recommend this teacher to everyone taking BA412, or any other class he would teach. He is the coolest teacher I have had here at SFSU. He made class enjoyable with his personality and weird jokes. He knew his material and related it to us in the examples he used. The homework was not mandatory but it helped to understand the material. It is true that we were his guinea pigs and I think he realized the mistakes he made with us. When we brought up concerns with him such as the length of tests he was very open to listening to us and he did modify them thereafter. We had two midterms and a comprehensive final, all open book and open notes. The final was not that hard as long as you studied. I really enjoyed going to his class, he made it fun. Once again I cannot stress how much I recommend everyone to take Ozgur Ozluk's class. You will not regret it.

Take his class...you will be happy!

One of the best in an otherwise mediocre crop of business professors. When I took the class (Fall '02), it was THE most enjoyable class. I had him at night, so it was 4 hrs straight but he made it fly by. he can be a little cranky or irritable at times, but it was always at people who talked during lecture, came in late or were noisy while eating, so it's understandle. he has a lisp and is from Turkey, so sometimes he has a little trouble with phrasing things simply but still has enjoyable, fun lectures.

We had 2 tests, a final & a quiz for every chapter we studied. the quizzes were always given right after he finished lecturing on that subject, with it being just a simple variation of the example he just gave...how easy is that! AND...everything (quizzes, tests, final) was OPEN BOOK, OPEN NOTES!! But because you are really limited on time, you HAVE to know the material and just use your notes & book as a reference. you WILL NOT have time to research every problem. although, i've heard that he no longer gives open book, open note tests and quizzes.

anyways, he's way better than almost all of the other professors who teach this class, he will go over each subject until everyone understands, he's there for you during office hours, and he's just generally a great, friendly person.

Great Teacher.

He was one of the few teachers I've had at SF state that I've really enjoyed listening to lectures from. Homework is right out of the book and he will go over any questions in class. It really pays to do the homework and ask questions. Exams are pretty straightforward, only problem, not enough time to complete them in. I would recommend him as a teacher, if you try and go to office hours it also pays off. The quizes are really easy, exactly what he teaches in class. Focus on the slides, and not so much on the material in the book.

Not a good idea!

Do not take this teacher. He is rude and obnoxious. When students ask him to clarify a theory he said that he can't spoon feed them. He also gets irritated when students ask too many questions. There are two exams and one comprehensive final that is extremely difficult so beware.

Great teacher

please dont listen to the moron in the previous review grading prof. ozluk a D. he so does not deserve that. the only way to do bad in this class is if you dont come or you dont pay attention. as long as you listen and take notes its cool. ya tests are kinda hard but its open book open note. he gives 10 quizzes which are usually right after you learn the material so its fresh in your brain. he also dropped the worst 3 quizzes. he also doesnt grade the projects. its kinda just an FYI project. he is a bit giddy at times but its fun and it keeps class interesting. also class goes kinda fast at times but if you tell him to slow down he will and he ALWAYS makes himself available if you need help. i think hes a really cool teacher.

He is a bright, rising star on the sfsu campus. I look forward to more classes with him. What you saw is what you got. This is all I can ask from a Professor. Any other criticism should be kept in the therapists' office. Sounds like some people need work on issues and a good editor.

What A Torture?

Basically, he doesn't have any talent of being teacher. He tortured us with quizzes all the time without a notice. We had to take quizzes whenever he liked. It was a real torture. Always in quizzes or other tests, there were many ambiguous questions. Each question had several parts so It was 6 to 7 questions in one question. Compare to other classes, it was too much. Even another class, in the same level, had a take-home final but he had a comprehensive final test. Can you believe it? I guess he was obsessed with tests so he always mentioned in class about different tricks which he might use in tests. If you like to be tricked, you are in right class. Again,It was a real torture... I'm so sorry to give him an overall grade of "D" because he is not qualified as a teacher at all. Frankly, he is in a wrong business and he is lucky to get a "D" not "F". Also,so sorry for us to bear such a teacher who has no Teaching Skills. It is not our fault to deal with somebody who doesn't know how to teach or even how to talk. It's school directors' fault because they can't find any good teachers. His grading system is worse than his English skills. Do not rely on what he says. Just watch him what he does. At the very beginning, we found out that we are in a deep trouble. Finally, I suggest him to look for a job in Vegas as a magician, because he liked to trick us all the time by those tricky questions. Well, I earned a good grade but I was tortured by him with those nightmare tests. Now, I think I should've droped it earlier..... And the worse part is that he never admits he is wrong. So, my pray for you if you are going to take this class.

He IS a little fruity, but don't let that fool you...

Ozgur is a little giddy at times. OKAY, maybe all the time. BUT, he is pretty interesting. This was his first semster teaching Operations Management, and considering that I have TRIED to take it once before during the summer (Oh GOD, what was I thinking?) with Elimam (a graduate studies professor with a dry personality)...I was actually happy to have a teacher with a sincere sense of humor and vast intelligence. He is still trying to find his teaching style, but so far I think he has done an outstanding job. He knows his shit, he has been in the industry. His powerpoints are good, and he puts Ops Mgmt into examples that relate to students...i.e. beer bashes, ikea furniture and supermodels/celebrities! He does has a heavy Turkish accent (and a lisp), but most BA 412 professors have accents (wierd) but once you get used to it, you learn to filter it out. He'll make you laugh at his corny jokes. Only complaint about the exams are that he makes them too long and you don't always get a chance to finish it (even the final was too long). Overall, he was a good teacher for it being his first semester teaching. We were his 'lab rats' even he said so. I recommend him OVER ANY of the other BA 412 professors. Oh yeah, and he grades the class on a CURVE. You don't even need the textbook. Everything is straight of the powerpoints and class notes. Save the $125 the bookstore charges for your books and invest in a tutor if necessary, because this class is HECKA HARD no matter who you take.
