A rare teacher...

Beth is a rare teacher. She allows students to make up their minds about issues and doesn't condescend or tell you your ideas are wong. She is very sensitive to everyones feelings and creates a safe environment for discussion. If you do not mind doing some work, you will love this class. The assignments are low pressure and as long as you do your reading, you can not fail the papers. Your opinion is what matters, not some text verbatim. I highly recommend any class Beth teaches, she is fantastic.

An engaging teacher

Ribet is a great teacher. Although it will say there is a project in other reviews, she did not require one the semester that I took WOMS 150. The reading level for this class is very high. However, most of the readings are not discussed, so you don't have to do all of them. The only time they are brought up are during the graded Reading Commentaries, but you still don't have to do anywhere near all of the reading.

Her grading is also extremely easy. She just wants you to fulfill the requirements and you get an "A". This class is based heavily in reading, but it is not too much to manage.

Also, she has an amazing late work policy: Just turn it in. As long as you turn it in before the next assignment is due (about two weeks), you'll be fine. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, but it pretty much applies.

Do not take this course unless you want to work a lot

Unless you love to work, then I suggest you don't take this course. I took this course to fulfill the GE requirement for American History. And although this is a GE course and at 100 level, Professor Ribet gives you a ton of assignments to fulfill - textbook readings (which are fairly lengthy), 3 books to read outside of class (you choose the books on her list), 3 commentary papers to the textbook readings, 3 book analysis papers to the books you've read, and a group project (which is heavy). She is a good professor with lots of knowledge on women's history, but seems to not understand that this one class takes a lot of time (I've found myself taking at least 4 to 5 hours a night reading the material for this course). I recommend that you take another history class with much more leeway.

A fun class

Beth is a really cool teacher. At first i thought that the 6 papers and a group final were a lot of work but it turned out this was one of my easy classes this semester. She grades fairly easy because she allows the student's thoughts to come out in the papers. She urges students to speak but i barely did. however, because i have a blog, it was easy for me to send her some of my insights of what was going through my head during class and that's what really helped me get an A. And since i like Politics mixed with Sociology and humanity, this was my kinda class. so overall, i got a good grade and i enjoyed her class.

Interesting, not too stressful

I really liked this class and Ms. Ribet. She did a great job of teaching the material. Her lectures were always interesting and never boring. We also watched many interesting movies. There were no tests, but you have to read 3 books and write reviews on them. We also had to write 3 commentaries on the primary text. There was no final, but we had to do a group project. This can be good or bad depending on who's in your group. Overall I really enjoyed the class and I would recommend anyone who wants to learn about women's history to take this class with Ms. Ribet.
