Biology is not my major yet Jancy Rickman is by far the best professor I've had to date. She has great energy, makes everything interesting, has a sense of humor and engages the students, challenging them and answering any and all questions. It's obvious she is doing what she loves.

Jancy was a great teacher! I loved how she would write everything on the board that she was lecturing about. It helped a lot. If you didn't understand something, she would be gladly to help you. Her exams were based on what she wrote on the board. I never had to open my book. Her handwriting was surprisingly very neat for a teacher. Her voice may crack a little while she talks but overall she's a great teacher to have!

I usually hate science in any form, but I really enjoyed Rickman's class. She takes biology and makes you think about how it applies to your everyday life. The only homework we ever had, maybe twice, was to read one of the side bars in our book. If you pay attention and take good notes, you won't even have to read the book. She writes all the notes on the board and draws diagrams. We had four regular exams and a final, all multiple choice. She drops the lowest of your five exam scores. She offers extra credit if you go to a seminar at the Health Center and fill out a survey relating it to biology. Months later, I still remember some biology, which I think is an absolute miracle.

my first impression of the class was, "dear god, i'm going to have to sit through an entire semester for the voice impersonator for marge simpson." i was wrong though, jancy is way cool. her lectures were very clear and organized. she made bio100 an enjoyable learning experience. she was totally down to answer ?s during and after class. to get a A you must show up to every class and take great notes. there is no need to buy the book, just copy pages needed if there are assignments. you take 4 tests and she drops the lowest score. extra credit opportunities consist of health workshops or a summary of a health related article. take good notes during class, study them and you'll be cool.

Rickman is a very good teacher. All of her exams are based on her lectures, so you don't even need the book. You just have to copy want she writes down on the board because her exams are straight from her notes, so you don't even have to listen to what she says. She's open to questions, and is very approachable before & after class, she even offers extra credit. I definitely recommend her.

Jancy is a great professor. She shows great enthusiasm and keeps the class interested in the class. Her lectures are very informative and her tests correspond very well. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Highly Recommend.

I think this teacher is the best teacher I have had by far. Her class was incredibly easy but you still learn a lot! She's always enthusiastic and she always answers everyone's questions but when she can't answer the question she actually takes the time to research it. She's generally a nice person.
Her lectures were easy to follow and generally organized. Her tests are based on her lectures (meaning you'd have to go to class), multiple choice, not cumulative, and no final. Also, it's impossible to actually fail the class because she gives you a lot of extra credit points, there's no homework to do, and no reading (by the way there's no point in buying the book for the class unless you want it around as an expensive doorstop or something).
I think her class is the best class to take to fulfill the science requirement or just in general.

I was really scared to take biology because I am not a science major and thought that the material will be very difficult to comprehend.
This professor is excellent, all her tests are very straightforward, and not meant to confuse anyone. Entirely from notes, as long as you show up for the class there should be no problem getting high grades on the test.
She is also great in explaining everything in simple terms. There is never homework other then studying for the exams and many opportunities to earn extra credit.

I took Jancy's class in the first session of summer semester '01. She's definitely one of the best lecturers at SF State. She makes Biology interesting and fun. I don't particulary enjoy science, but I loved her class. So, there's hope for everybody. Perhaps, the best thing about Jancy is her personality. She's very kind and easy going. If you put in the time and work she requires for her class, you'll get an A. Just a word of warning, Jancy expects you to work, as teachers should. She doesn't hand out good grades, but she's fair.
Jancy took us on field trips practically every class meeting, which was extremely cool. She gave us about 1 hour to eat lunch and write a journal for each field trip site that we went to. You have to be very DETAILED on your journal. I made a mistake with that, and she docked off some points. She asked us to write two papers (3 pgs. each), which may seem a lot in the summer, but it wasn't that difficult. Then, our final project was a presentation about any topic we want, given that it has something to do with Biology. It turned out to be a really fun project.
Definitely take Jancy Rickman if you want to learn and have fun. Enjoy.
