Take this class RAZA!!

Ok teacher.Very knowledgable, kinda boring class presentation. Long monotone lectures. Good readings. Soustelle, Carasco, Portilla, Batalla. Breaks the class into groups for discussion. Asks for participation in formulating essay questions.

Good class, I reccomend it.

Professor Rivera is one of the better instructors at SFSU. Yes, the course is challenging and the papers are so demanding. The good thing is that students are allowed to think outside of the box and develop a new style of writing that includes emotions. Not all of the books were my first choice but I learned much more than I anticipated. If you are looking for a challenge then I highly recommend Professor Rivera. His course changed the way that I think about La Raza and my style of writing.

Although Rivera is a very challenging professoe and at times assigns too much reading, he is a very knowledgeable professor. I found his classes challenging but learned a lot from him and would take another class from him. I honestly learned a lot.

Although he may be egotistical and a tad boring, what teachers aren't to some degree? I was, however, frustrated by the lengthy reading assignments he gave. I ended up spending over a hundred dollars for books in his class, normally you wouldn't expect to shell out that much unless it were a thick chemistry or math book. The secret to his class and getting a good grade is to take notes on what he says and read portions of the texts and just regurgitate it all back to him (he's so full of himself that he would give you a good grade).

Although he has a tendency to talk over the heads of most students in the class, I still have to admit to enjoying his lectures. I feel that I have learned a great deal by just listening to him talk about the readings. But, more importantly, I constantly felt challenged by him (and his approach). My only caution is that if you have a question, it is best not to ask in class -- he will often give you a better answer during his office hours (besides, he's also more friend then).

Dr. Rivera is one of the best instructors in this campus. He is demanding but in the process the student learns so much about critical thinking, meta-theoretical approaches, etc. Dr. Rivera pushes the student so s/he can perform with the highest performance ever (he pushes me to excellence)....anyhow, I hope I can take more classes taught by Dr. Rivera....I give him an A+

I found Prof. Rivera very difficult to follow, and the reading material only seemed to be somewhat related to the subject of the class.I felt Prof Rivera was teaching a GE class as something more like a upper-division, or maybe even graduate, class. His lectures always included reference to LOTS of ideas and concepts and writers I had never heard of. The "homework" consisted only of reading. The asssigned texts were difficult, somitimes very obscure, and the load was heavy. There were 2 10 page papers, other than that, no tests. While Prof. Rivera is obviously very well-read and educated, I think he expects way too much from students, especially in a GE class.
