Philosophy Professor Declines Offer from Stanford

Definitely one of the better professors at SFSU. Great teacher. She's smart, articulate, informed and has absolutely no ego. Professional demeanor. Diplomatic and organized. Her Critical Thinking class, which I took way back in the 90's, was challenging but not ridiculously difficult. Like any memorably well-taught college course, it just had a great format; the quizes and tests were well-spaced and the homework assignments kept us engaged. Fair distribution of grades as well. Good foundation for applying logic when writing essay assignments in other classes, and analyzing logic in its other argumentative forms. Also: Great way of saying the word "Why", pronounced with a slight, semi-syllabic 'h' at the begining. Too appropriate!

awesom-o!

Prof Robertson is amazing. She is so friendly and smart and open and just all around a great person, which spills over into her teaching. Any class with her is highly recommended. Structured well, adequate workload, relevant, if a bit dry, readings. But she cant be blamed for that - to learn about Hobbes, you sort of have to read Hobbes. Fair grader and great at controlling the crazy philosophy majors in the class while not being cruel.

Fun and easy

She is the nicest teacher in the whole world. One of the group projects is a debate and she gave out automatic A's if you just sat in front of the class and talked. Didn't even check if we had done any research. And her lectures are so clear and simple, you learn the stuff without even knowing it.

Plus she is very open to class discussion, giving the class a comfortable easy going feeling.

The homework is really easy too and just takes 10 minutes. She even let us do it in class on the day it was due. Overall a fun teacher and easy "A" class that isn't boring.

I wish there were more people of her caliber

I only wish that this class was mandatory like some other GEs. This instructor has enlighten me in so many ways. And I will always be grateful to her. If you are concerned about the world and justice, take this class. It will clear your mind and make you understand WHY so many things have gone wrong in the world and how much THIS country has to do with the misery of the rest of the world. Who knows it might be you who can later on change a thing or two TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS INSTRUCTOR

SHE IS THE BEST!!!

People you need to listen to me right now if you want to do good in school. you need to take Ann Robertson for every philosophy classes as you can. she is the best teacher i have had in a very long time. i always enjoyed going to class because she made it fun and we had great discussions that made it even more interesting. her personality is one of a kind, she makes everything sound funny even though its not and its tight when she cracks jokes on students who do not pay attention. well all that there is left to say is that if you want to learn something and get a GOOD grade take her class.

Great teacher!

I am extremely glad that I took Philosophy 110 with Professor Robertson. At first, I wasn't sure how much I was going to like her. She didn't seem to be very interesting at the beginning. But over the course of the semester, I changed my mind completely. Professor Robertson is easy going and likeable. Her exams and quizzes are easy, with just a little bit of studying. This is an easy A class, as long as you find some interest in philosophy. This class (110) is also based solely on arguments; how to present arguments and how not to. The way that professor Robertson teaches this class is straightforward. I recommend this class highly.

Great teacher!

Take as many Robertson classes as you can..You won't regret it

The only thing about Robertson that I didn't like was how the multiple choice tests had more than one right answer per question.

Other than that, she is great.

culturally enlightening

Dr. Robertson is a great teacher. Her profound compassion to teach is apparent in her everyday lectures and attitude toward students. Unlike many other professors, she is always accessible in helping students and offers helpful advice. Although, it may be hard to see the deeper meaning from the philosophical works assigned, Dr. Roberston provides a clear illustration and background information in her lectures. She does not prowl on students for class participation, instead she encourages it by offering extra credit to those who do and does not penalize students for not participating. Her exams are fairly easy if one attends class often. The biggest assigment, and only paper is a 8-10 page paper on your own philosophical view points in contrast to the material presented in class. The final paper seems difficult, but it really is not. Another exciting aspect of this class, is that Robertson teaches more than just western philosophy; this includes Akan (African) and Buddhist philosophy. Take this class if you want to be culturally enlightened!!!

Great if you want an A, not so great if you want to learn...

Prof. Robertson has a good personality and is easy to get along with. She tends to have a liberal point of view, and will disagree with you if have a different view. However, she does encourage you to argue, and probably will not grade you down if you have a different view. Her tests are REALLY easy, mostly common sense. I was somewhat dissapointed that there was no actual PHILOSOPHY in this class. All we did was learn the definitions (premise, conclusion, etc.) and learn falicies. I would thought that we would learn reasoning, induction, different philosophies, etc.. but we didn't. So if you want to actually LEARN Philoshophy, or you don't have a liberal point of view, perhaps this class isn't for you. But if you just want to get an A, and aren't interested in philosophy, this class is cool!

A well prepared and thoughtful Teacher

Ann Roberts is a great teacher who gives extremely well prepared lectures. She tries hard to be a fair and unbiased grader. Even dealing with heady material such as Rousseau, Marx and Foucault she will try and most often succeed at making it enjoyable.

Most interesting teacher ever!

I can't say enough about this teacher. Her lectures are so stimulating and the books she assigns are a joy to read, they are books i would read for leisure. Yes, you have to do the reading, but it isn't hard. Take this teacher! She will change your mind about philosophy and inspire you!

Misconception

I really dreaded taking this course because, like c'mon - it's philosophy. But after taking this course, I found it quite stimulating. I enjoyed her lectures - they gave deep insight to ancient men's philosophies and made it very practical in today's. What was a bit surprising was that it was a 101 course and you think, EASY. But, it was still time-consuming (maybe because I had so many units that semester). There were reading assignments due before most classes and I advise you if you're thinking about taking her and having courses that require heavy reading or your time, do not take her. So that was a drag...and constant group discussions and having nobody talk in your group is really non-productive. As for her exams, they're ok if you do the reading.

Good Teacher

The first day that I was in her class, I thought philosophy was boring. Later, I was amazed of how helpful it could be, especially when making arguments. Her lectures were clear and consise, and she is nice and easy-going. The class had an overall friendly atmosphere. Her exams and homework could get tricky, so study!

One of the BEST at SFSU. I never tought Philosophy could be so interesting and fun! She really makes an effort to know all of her students, and encourages participation without having to force it. Your argument is heard and accepted if you can back it up. (You can earn back exam points if you can convince her that your answer can be right in some cases.) Her tests and assignments are clear and reasonible. I strongly encourage you to seek her classes out.

Prof. Ann Robertson is one of the best teachers I had in SFSU. I mean it. I like the way she teaches. One thing i learn from her is that you have to think and argue about a particular point about the discussion in the class. Sometimes she annoyed you by disagreeing with you or asking questions that will prove your point wrong. Hey isn't that critical thinking is all about. That makes you a deep thinker and i like that. Her tests are easy. At least for me. If you go to class regularly and do the readings you will ace the class. She encourages group discussion. Also she is one of the very few teachers who gave you her home phone so that you can contact her easily when you need help. Believe me! Take her class in philosophy. You will not be DISAPPOINTED!

The was the very best class I have yet had in college. I enjoyed being in the class very much. I strongly recommend students to take Dr. Robertsons class. This class was an excellent educational experience. The tests are not too hard, with short answer questions. The reading was fascinating and the class lectures where great in fascilitating the reading. Her class had much reading, and in my opinion the reading is required to do well on the tests.

Dr. Robertson is a very enthusiastic and helpful lecturer. I was always happy to be in her class. Her syllabus is quite clear and you can talk to her about anything. She really listens to her students and loves to argue. She teaches you to be a stronger person and speak for yourself. Her quizzes and tests were somewhat hard. You have to study!! However, she is very fair and there is no surprises on exams. Everything that is on an exam has been disscused in class (so you better be there...). Anyway, I enjoyed her class the most out of everything I've taken so far. She's intelligent, witty, calm, and understanding. I urge you to take her classes, you will definitely learn something... and more about yourself as well.

Dr. Robertson is most definately the best instructor in the SFSU Philosophy Department. She takes the often difficult course material and makes very clear and understandable formulations of the material without taking away from the complexity and profundity of the subject matter. Her courses are extremely stimulating and fun. This is not to say that she is stupid and lets less dedicated students get by. She is very flexible with respect to grades since she feels that the subject matter holds a much higher importance than the arbitrary grading system. She is also the kindest and most understanding instructor you'll find in philosophy. Her lectures and her manner is very accessable for non-philosophy majors and philosophy majors. I strongly urge anyone to take any of her classes.

This class was very interesting. I enjoyed the class discusions a lot. The tests were quite fair. Thr reading we had, which was several books, was fun, except for one book, which had too many facts and not much else. This class is a must for anyone interested in knowing a whole lot more about our world today and its history in a very profound context.

I have had two classes with this professor and both have been highly enjoyable. This professor gives clear and useful lectures to back up the light reading of philosophers including Aristotle, Plato, and Marx. Her exams are anounced and fair and not too difficult if you've followed along. If you take any Philosophy classes make sure they are with this professor

She is one of the few excellent instructors I've met in SFSU for the last 2 years. She gives little homework in every class, and it helps a lot to understand what we're doing in class. The way she explains is very clear and understandable, and she always welcomes students to raise questions, and she seems really happy to answer them at any time. She respects all her students, and she never insults students who don't understand the material but explains things kindly. I was so happy to see someone who is really nice, caring, respectful, thoughtful, and great in teaching. If you have any PHIL class to take, take her class!!!
