I originally took MGMT 407 and dropped the class after not doing so well on the first two test. In fact, by the time the second test came around, a majority of the class had already dropped the course. I came into DS411 thinking that it will be just as hard as MGMT 407. Mr. Saltzman made this course interesting and taught in a way that you can understand. He assigns homework but does not collect them. His examples are to the point and he explains it very well. The three spreadsheet assignments that he assigns are not hard but at the same time are not easy. You do have to pay attention in class in order for you to understand the material. The take home tests (3) have the same level of difficulty as the spreadsheet assignments. If you understood the spreadsheet assignments, you should do fairly well on the take home exams. If you do fairly well on the take home exams, you should do fine in the in class exams. His final is cumulative. But if you did well on the previous exams, you should do well. It would help to have a lap top. Mr. Saltzman is very approachable.

Mr. Saltzman is a great teacher. I gave a C for exams because sometimes the tests do not reflect homework problems. He is very approachable and helpful with all questions. Unlike other Math teachers, he gives points for homework. To achieve a good grade, I recommend attending all classes, asking questions if you don't understand something, do all of your homework, see a tutor if you are experiencing great difficulty and of course study. Unfortunately, I did all of the above and still got a D+. Since this is a pre-req for me, a D+ is passing, thank God!! Just to warn you, BA 110 is quite challenging, so be prepared. If you need to take this course, take it with Mr. Saltzman.

Saltzman is a great Professor, who is educated and is extremely personable. Friendly!
He gives great notes and homework is assigned, but not collected. He also goes over homework problems in class and encourages students to ask questions.
Attendence will not affect your grade b/c he usually summarizes what he went over the previous day.
Exams are open notes and he grades on a curve. The only hard part was the excel assigments...
Professor Saltzman is a really easy teacher, but most importantly, YOU WILL LEARN IN HIS CLASS. I still remember everything. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This professor is really nice and helpful. He really seems to enjoy what he does and is always happy to answer any questions. Although attendance and doing homework assignments are not mandatory, it is important to keep up. The tests are pretty easy as long as you have a basic idea of what is going on because all the tests are open book and notes. Great teacher!

2 Midterm (20% each) Final exam ( 37.5 %) Projects ( 12.5 %)
Overall, if you do the homeworks problems he assign for each chapters and understand it all, you will do well in his exams.

What an incredible teacher. Not only did Prof Saltzman have an incredible passion for teaching, he knew how to convey difficult subjet matter in a very simple way to the class. His 3 tests (2 midterm and 1 final) were all open book and notes. If you attended class and took good notes, you should have no problem in the class. He is very open to discussion and tries his hardest to answer all questions in a clear and concise way. I would highly suggest you take him for BA 212. I will definatly take him for BA 412.

Professor Saltzman is a great teacher. His class isn't easy, but it definitely isn't impossible. For the BA 110 class, there are three midterms and one final exam. None were easy A, but if you study hard, it is completely possible. I got 2 A's and one B+ on the midterms, so it is possible! Professor Saltzman is a great guy - very easygoing and nice. He is always willing to help you. Every class period we go over the homework, and anyone can ask him to solve a homework problem. If you take this class, I recommend that you attend most class meetings, if not all. We go over homework, and then he lectures for the rest of the time. But the lectures aren't bad at all! He makes math easy to understand, and if you don't understand, you can always find him during office hours, after class, etc. I highly recommend him.

Hold on to your seat. This professor likes to cover a lot of material. These are 6 "assignments" that are scored and three tests. The tests are open book, but contain questions that are not always clear. This makes his tests very difficult. Dr. Saltzman is articulate in his class presentations and will patiently and politely answer questions for students. He is available to students during posted office hours. He answers his e-mail.

This is one time I completely agree with everyone else - this prof is great. Just do the practice problems (even though he doesn't collect them) and his exams will be passable. It's easy to get a B if you attend all lectures, hand in all 6 assignments, and do SOME of the practice problems. To get an A, you have to do almost ALL of the practice problems and really be meticulous on the exams - label all axes correctly, etc. Either way, you really learn the material, and that's what matters.

Moreover, he treated us all as peers (although he has a PhD in Maths!). Project/Excel homeworks were fair - 6 over the course of the semester. Exams were challenging but fair if you'd done the practice questions - and it's all open book!

Prof Saltzman is one of the best lecturer to have in college! His class is very well organized, his notes are helpful, and the exams are mostly simple and straight-forward questions. Part of his homeworks count as 50 pts towards the final grade (which can help alot!). However, students who dropped the class are people who do not attend lectures. This is one class that you would have to put in effort if you do not have a good foundation in Math/Calculus. Prof Saltzman is very patient and you will not feel intimidated by asking him questions. I have come to like Math after taking his BA 110 class.

What can I say? Dr. Saltzman is absolutely an excellent instructor. I was able to tell from day one. When he took roll and asked if students had their prerequisites, he had handy a course equivalency chart in case students didn't know if courses they had taken elsewhere were acceptable. From his thorough and easy to understand lectures, to the extra effort he made outside of class to help students in need Dr. Saltzman showed how much he really cares about his students and their learning. I must admit that his final was challenging, but if you did the homework and actually studied his class notes (given that you didn't miss a class) you would have well aced his class with flying colors. His humor, wit, and charismatic personality helped to make learning operations management a fun class! I'm sure that if I had taken it with another professor, the class would be dull and easy to fall asleep in. Dr. Saltzman also made a huge effort in getting our homework assignments and exams back to us in a timely fashion, usually within the next class meeting. He was extremely patient and helpful during his office hours, before/after class, and very accomodating over email. He always came to class on time everyday and prepared with an organized lecture, using real world examples to help students better understand the material. I have never come across such an amazing professor at all my years at SFSU and will never forget Dr. Saltzman. He's one instructor that you would not want to pass up.

He thoroughly explains the material. It's a lot to know and study and the exams don't really provide you with enough time to finish them, but his teaching method is pure and simple. No tricks. Exams are lecture-based.

Professor Saltzman was amazingly organized for each class especially with time management. He is always open to questions and takes time to discuss students' opinions. The exams are tough and there is insufficient time to complete them thoroughly. However, completion of the "optional" homework problems does benefit one's capacity to expedite solutions to the examination problems. Prof. Saltzman is a tough but fair grader. He is also readily available for consultation outside of class and very prompt with his replies over the email.
I would highly recommend this professor for the BUS 786 course and hope that I can take another class with him. He is one of the best professors I've known and a major asset to SFSU!

Prof Saltman is the BEST Professor in business at SFSU. He come to class well-prepared, provides a mini-outline of the days work. His lectures are clear, concise and well spoken. His writing is neat. He ALWAYS takes time for questions. He uses every moment of class time.
Additionally, he's available at almost anytime to meet with students individually. He encourages personal appointments to review questions or simply use of your calculator.
He issues a lot of "suggested" homework (none is turned in!) The answers to the homework are conveniently on reserve in the library.
His test are difficult, but they're open book too! The final was the most difficult! He grades on a curve, with the average grade being a C.
I wish there were more Professors at SFSU like Professor Saltzman. He provides the teaching and the learning is up to us!
The only negative at all is the Mini Tab/Excel Assignments. There are 5-6 of them and they are turned in! They end of taking a lot of time and he grades them very strictly. These points can really make a difference in your final grade,so watch out!
In summary, you get the feeling Prof. Saltman is a teacher because he enjoys educating individuals, watching them learn.
Conversely, I've found other professors, provide a lecture to fill the time.....and leave the teaching and the learning up to us! With other Prof. you get the feeling they are a Prof. because it's "a job" those individuals are unapproachable and poor educators!

Dr. Saltzman is by far the best teacher I've had in my 3 years at SFSU! BA-212 is a difficult class and he made it an enjoyable experience and helps us to really understand the material, using down-to-earth examples we can relate to. He assigns homework and does go over select assignments so we are sure how to approach the problems and this gives you insight into the concepts -- making it all more understandable! His exams are very, very fair and if you've come to class and have taken good notes and did all the homework -- you'll do fine on the exams. I'm not saying the exams are easy -- just that you can get an A in the class if you put in the work.
Dr. Saltzman is so good at teaching this class that I have considered going into the field of Statistics.
I hope he continues to teach for many years. Students need more professors like him. Ones that are truly interested in helping students and ones that like what they are doing!!

Robert Salzman is truly fantastic. Everything he says and does is organized, concise and easy to understand. He will explain everything clearly, he is to the point, there's no boring "filler talk" about his life's experiences. All the tests are open book, not that that makes it any easier, you still have to learn the stuff. Do the homework and it will be breeze because Saltzman's lectures explain it all perfectly. His class isn't one where you skip the lectures and just read the book because the book makes more sense. I didn't miss a single day. I highly recommend taking Saltzman for any class. I just wish he taught more of the ones I needed. He should teach a class teaching other teachers how to teach!

I love this guy. I love this class. I had such an excellent experience, I decided to take BA 604: Forecasting. I really wish he taught that class too.
The tests in this class are challenging, but not unreasonably hard. The material covered in class and assigned homework (which you don't turn in) well prepares you for the exams. There are three exams (umm, maybe 2) and then a cumulative final. The final takes almost the full 2.5 hours allotted but it's really interesting.
There are three excel assignments which are time consuming but are also really interesting. If you're not that good with excel, he has a little software manual, which is very helpful. Also, there's an MS Project assignment but it's really easy.
I can't say enough good things about this professor. Just some of the things I remember from class:
He's got some excellent real-life examples (such as hypothesis tests on the sugar content of yogurt) that he formulated and solved himself. He tries to incorporate humor, which is very difficult to do in such a serious subject.
The problems on the tests were actually interesting and I actually looked forward to solving them.
I really wanted to change my major to BA but I heard the required BICS classes are hard to get in to. Any professor that makes you want to change majors gets props from me.
This professor is totally approachable and I would recommend asking questions if there's a discrepancy in grading (as someone had posted earlier) or any other problems.

Professor Saltzman is without a doubt one of the best professors at SFSU! I took both his BA 212 and BA 412 classes ( I wish I took his BA 110 class too, although Prof. Platt wasn't bad either) and enjoyed both of his classes immensely. Prof Saltzman makes hard concepts easier to grasp, plus he always incorporates real life data/statistics into his lectures so the material is more interesting and meaningful. The material he teaches is used in the real world, so all your hard work/effort isn't put to waste. I DO NOT think he is boring. Approach him in his office and he has a pleasant personality, plus a good sense of humor :-) He is very organized and punctual, and is always open to students' questions during class. If, however, you're not the type to speak out in class, he is always available to meet with you in his office to answer questions. Or if your schedule does not match his hours, he is ALWAYS more than willing to meet with you outside of his office hours. Without hesitation, Professor Saltzman goes out of his way to help his students. In addition, he always responds to students' e-mails, which is much appreciated since many Professors don't bother taking the time. On exams, he grades fairly and consistently. He is the most fair professor I have had at SFSU! Prof Saltzman treats his students like adults, as well as his friends. I've enjoyed many chats with him while in his office. I definitely hope to converse with him in the future, or have him again as a professor. We definitely need more professors like him!! He is an awesome Professor, I wish he taught more classes! :-)

I really don't understand how anyone can say that Saltzman is a good instructor when he is so inconsistent and unfair in his grading. Even though two people make the same mistake on an assignment, he does not deduct points from both of these people but just from one of them. That is so unfair. He should be more consistent, for instance, if he deducts points off from people's paper for not puting the right labels on a graph, he should deduct points from everyone who puts the incorrect label. Besides being unfair, he is incredibly boring. In addition, he gives out six damn meaningless minitab assignments which i didn't learn anything from , but had to waste 40 bucks for purchasing the software in addition to buying the textbook for 50 bucks.

I took Professor Saltzman for BA 212 and BA412. I wouldn't dream of taking anyone else for the classes he teaches even if other students claim that another teacher is easy. Too bad he's not teaching other courses (that I have to take).
Needs Improvement: I wish he and truthfully, all instructors, would disregard tests, but just give more homework. Students learn more from doing homework. On tests, once you miss the problem, you lose so many points.
Besides that, he's: Enthusiastic about the subject matter Very knowledgeable about statistics and operations management Enjoys teaching students Applies "real-world" business examples in teaching Encourages students to visit him if they need assistance Promotes life-long learning Invites class participation Communicates clearly and effectively
Characteristics: Intelligent Humorous Charismatic Inspirational Pleasant Fair Heroic All the good things!
Improvements: Administration should invite him to teach other classes, particularly some of the BICS classes. That department desperately needs ouststanding instructors like Professor Saltzman.

He is not one of those teachers who likes to control the class when they talk too much. As long as the students communicate about the subject than it's all good for him. He will be very picky and mark points for not filling in the minor details, but he's prepping us to do well in the real world. Don't let his appearance fool you: he'll make you work hard. Especially in the business program, where the big picture should be graded, and not the scientifically correctness of the output, this sometimes seems to me too stringent.
