Teacher to take!

He is a great teacher and easiest. I took him for his first semester teaching BUS360 in Fall 05 so I had it pretty good. He wants his students to learn and although he is not totally organized yet, he is open to suggestions. In my class, we had 2 presentations (5min solo & group) and 3 exams based on reading. I heard he changed to 3 presentation for Spring06 (now).

Easy and Fair Teacher

I had Jeff for both 787 and 860. Both times, his classes were pretty easy. For 860, there were no exams and just 2 group projects and a final paper. The group projects are based on case studies that he gives a nice synopsis at the end of each presentation. Overall workload is moderate. The only painful part is to listen to some of the other groups presentations. Bottom line though, Jeff knows his stuff, and can easily apply it to what is presently going on.

The only negatives I would say is that getting an A is pretty tough, but getting an A-/B+ is not too hard. Also, the guy doesn't smile too much or really make any jokes. He is very professional, but overall a nice guy and responds to your emails within a very short time.

You'll learn a lot from Saperstein's class

Broad advertising/marketing experience outside the classroom added to the quality of his lectures. Dependence on each other meant that we had to learn to work well in groups - and the required presentations were great practice. Good teaching, well balanced program which incorporated fair grading and very useful projects (no exams, presentation, essays & marketing plan).

Good "real world" preparation

Prof. Saperstein's involvement outside academia is one of his strengths. He brings in a lot of relevant industry info and perspective. He gave limited guidance in class and students had to largely rely on each other for help and support on several group projects. I think the experience was good preparation for the "real world". Throughout the term, Prof. Saperstein seemed very guarded and detached which left me questioning his sincerity. The grading seemed arbitrary.

Very subjective grader - be wary

Sapertstein's class was ok. It's hard to get excited about it when he really is not. Many of the articles that we had to research are from 1993 or before. It's obvious that he has not put any effort into the class in the last 10 years. Saperstein's grading is pretty awful. He unfairly punishes the ESL students who may have done a very large portion of the group's work. In one case, this wise guy, Paul, had done clearly no work on the project, such that he didn't even know the team members names, and he got the best grade of the group. In introducing the group, he had to keep the title page to read off their names, and when it was accidently switched to the next slide, he had to go back, twice. It showed a severe lack of team work on his part. He probably never attended a group meeting. However, since he was a native English speaker, Saperstein gave him an A+ and the rest of the group Bs. That is very shallow grading. Is the lesson style over substance? Maybe that is the marketing lesson we should have learned. How very sad.

Trust me and take him

Despite the opposing views, I really like Saperstein.I have taken both BUS 787 and MKTG 860 from him and I enjoyed the classes very much. He combines his work experiences with the class material so well that you don't get bored.Although I should say that there are several presentations during the semester, especially in MKTG 860 and if you are not comfortable with it, you might consider somebody else (as if you have the option?)

If you're looking for an easy class, this is it. The guy puts minimal effort into the class, probably because he has so much other stuff going on. He missed half of the classes. I missed the other half. Turned in a decent marketing plan, got an A-, and still didn't know what the fricking four p's were.

Prof Saperstein is a great teacher. His material is very relevent for any marketing work. He provides great number of case studies that model different business situation, explains the material very well, and ascertains any questions.

THe homeworks are mostly case studies, and as I mentioned the final project is a marketing plan. The marketing plan is a good exercise for all marketing majors or anyone who is looking to start their own venture in the future.

Jeff is a complete windbag full of hot air. He does not teach, he merely talks. His class is a tired dog and pony show and should be retired. Alas, you have no chance. If you need to take 787, you have to take it from Jeff because there is no other choice. Good luck. Start your marketing plan research early. Otherwise, you will shoot yourself in the foot.
