I never had to write essay in my old high school so this class was really challenging. The first time i met him I thought he was on crack because he would bust out cursing saying motherf***** and other words like that. He would cuse every 10 seconds which was really funny. He grades his essay really hard and his test are some what hard.
He gives 6 test and only grades your best 4. The bad part is that he if you make a mistake, your grade drops to a C. If you make two mistakes....your grade is an F. He tells you what he expects from you on the first day so basically he will tell you everything i just did. I highly recomend you not to have a job if you have this class. You really have to put work into this class.
I was very good in my old high school english class and if your expecting an A for english.....don't be in this class.....but if you want to pass the JEPET.....get in. You will learn how to structure your essay and overall...this is a good class, just hate the way he grades.

Schleunes as a source of entertainment is cool but as an english 114 teacher it was boring as all hell! he isn't as fair or easy as he seems. he does give more variability with essay topics but the THEMES of each easy are stupid. it's hard to get an A on his essays. i got B's on each one. yet i ultimatly got a C+ in the class cause of those grammar quizzes. if it's hard for you to take a quiz in only 5 minutes don't take his class! he bases 1/3 of the grade on these horrible grammar quizzes! if you miss one, you get a C if you miss two or more it's an F and it's easy to make small mistakes, like forgetting the coma. also, the class is boring and it's hard to go. i would leave halfway during class because i felt like i was wasting my time here on earth. i would've done better if i took it more seriously. but the bottom line is, try to avoid him. if you do get him he's not terrible, you just won't learn much. i hear jernigan is way better.

Mark is a real weirdo. While demonstrating how to freewrite using dinosaurs, he started hopping and shreiking around the class like a baby T-Rex. He thinks that when computers reach the capacity of the human brain, robots will take over. He's a 50-something bald rock musician who gave us sample copies of his band's latest CD. However, he is very open about essay topics and encourages class discussion. Any homework he assigns is for use on the next essay. We wrote about 7 essays, and if you don't turn one in, he'll fail you. You can turn one essay in late, at the end of the semester, without penalty. He makes you do peer review sessions in class for every essay. We had to take these dumb quizzes for the second half of the semester, and a practice JEPET for our final.

He was the best english teacher I have had in many years. He got staight to the point, gave excellent examples and was a very understanding teacher. I wish he was my teacher for every class. He made learning really fun, and thats hard to come by in college.

i love mark!!! i'm a senior and i had him four years ago but i must give him my props because he deserves it. he was my first English teacher at SFSU and he really knows his shit. i loved his class and going to class was a joy. he always made me smile even when the classroom was hot and he was very understanding. he even remembers me after the classes ended and said "hello" but that was when i wasn't engulfed into so many classes. i wish i had him for ENG114 and 414 but he wasn't fitting my schedule. i kinda regret that i wasn't taking him for all the other classes because he is such a good teacher and he has a good head on his shoulders because he understands what is going on with college students. please take him...and tell him DISCOdaph sent yah.. i hope he remembers =P

Mark is the best teacher I have had so far in college. I'm glad he was my teacher for English 114. I learned a lot in his class, and the guy is cool just to talk with. If I fail the stupid JEPET test, I'll definitely take Mark for English 414. Too bad the guy doesn't teach 214.
Anyway, the class basically consists of six essays, but he goes over all of them and gives a lot of information on how to write them. The only essay that sucked was the authority essay, that's because the topic was so damn broad. Great teacher, and I'm telling you take this guy, you won't regret it!

Mark is the greatest teacher that I have come across in college so far. He is down to earth and he really knows how to relate to his students. There are a lot of essays but he really helps you with them and is available often for extra help. I have learned a lot more about English; mostly, stuff that I should have learned years ago but didn't. He is fabulous!!!

Take his class. Mark is one of those teachers that you wait for in college, the one that you always hoped you would get. He's a funny, intelligent, kind teacher, he knows his stuff, he trusts his students, and he's a great person to be around. It's not hard to get an A, and I only wish I'd had more time to do just that, but trust me. Take his class.

Mark is Great! What can I say about him. I just love his class because I actually learned a lot from him. He made us write about 4 essays( because I took summer school with him. He is a very fair grader. You really get what you deserve. He also gives us a grammer quiz everyday. They are not hard, but he does make you learn the material. He is fun to be with and to tell you the truth, I think that I actually learned a lot more from him than my Eng 214 teacher. Take him if you can. You will thank me for it later! =)

mark, as he tells his students call him is VERY funny guy, also funny looking. He is a very good teacher because he knows his sh!t when it come to writing. His assigments are easy to write but he makes you learn subject/verb stuff that everyone has to know and trans/sub words, which he made fairly easy to learn with a song that he sings!! GREAT teacher, sfsu should have more teachers like Mark
