"A Tough Teacher but helpful"

The first day of class you have an in class essay non graded. And he gives out six essays that are four pages each and you have to do a presentation. He also gives out quizzes and tells jokes. He's a nice guy but difficult grader. This is not a easy class it may come off as that the first day.You have to really work on you're papers otherwise he won't pass you.If he recommends that you see a tutor it's absolutely crucial that you listen to him. Also he rarely gives A's unless you work really hard and incorporate what he is looking for in the papers. He'll give you handouts and those will help you in the long run and the presentations as well. Even, though I didn't pass I would recommend that you take this teacher. Also, you have to take the Jepet exam at the end.

Great teacher but not an easy class!

Great teacher but not an easy class!! Although Prof. Schwab is a really nice teacher and has a great sense of humor, he is a tough grader and has very high standards. Workload: ~> 1 in-class essay (on the first day of class but not graded) ~> 4 essays (short stories) ~> 1 Essay (novel) ~> 1 Presentation on assigned reading ~> Quizzes on assigned readings ~> some minor homework assignments If you are lazy, avoid him.

Minimum pages for essays are 4 complete pages and assigned readings are approx: 10-30 pgs. Schwab gives students one week turn in a rough draft and final draft is due the following week. He assigns very interesting short stories and challenging essay topics. If you plan to take Schwab for English 214 make sure you are not taking intense courses (ex. Finance) along with this class and I recommend to you carefully proofread your final draft before turning it in!

Best English Teacher.

Mr. Schwab is the best english teacher I've ever had. He has a great personality and will help you improve your writing skills. He gives interesting lectures, with lots of examples. You are required to write an essay every two weeks, but you get to go over your rough draft in class which is helpfull. A big part of this class is group discussions, where a group of students leads a discussion on the topic you will write your essay on that week. The topics are relevant and interesting, such as debating the merits of SUVS, patriotism, smoking etc. I would highly reccomend this class.

Great Teach!~

Great teacher i must say. Very organized, he is a Giants fan and he has the best sense of humor in sf state. He begins his class by cracking a joke which is a really good way to start. His assignments are consist of essay and he is a fair grader and gives good feedbacks as well. This is a very relaxing class and you will learn alot.

great teacher

Mr. Schwab is one of the best eng. teachers i have ever had. when you first come into his class, he is very welcoming and goes over the syllabus. everything on the syllabus is very precise. he class is very routine. one week, you read a short story and discuss it in class. the next week you turn in the rouch draft and peer edit, the third week you turn in the final draft. his "tests" are a sinch. they're more like 5 question quizzes. the only "hard" thing he expects most out of everyone is that you HAVE to be in class. he makes a very good point that he misses out on a lot of activities jsut to teach us so we should be able to miss out on whatever else we'd be doing to attend his class. he's a real sweetheart too. great personality. VERY, VERY RARE THAT ANYONE GETS LOWER THAN A B- IN HIS CLASS BECAUSE HE IS SO THROUGH

An excellent teacher, one of the best I've had.

Prof. Schwab is an excellent teacher. He is very organized and leads a great class. The course work is demanding, but Prof. Schwab lays out the class in a way that, if you follow what he suggests you will do just fine. He encourages you to participate in class discussions and he is very respectful of those that decide to say something. His feed back on the essays are excellent; the comments really helped me improve my writing. Prof. Schwab really cares about how people do in his class, but if you don't care and don't do the work he can't help you. I would definately recommend Prof. Schwab to those students that really want to improve their writing.

Charles Schwab is a great English teacher and a credit to the English department. Like others have stated, he creates a very friendly and relaxed learning atmosphere and always tries to engage his student in thought provoking discussions. He teaches you helpful tricks to improve your writing style which I've carried with me and is more than fair in his grading policy. I believe you have to write 6-7 essays, but he always gives you room for improvement. He was always trying to open our minds to new ways of viewing or thinking about literature and that was very fun and rewarding. Needless to say, I highly recommend him!

Excellent and very open-minded teacher. He is organize and his lecture are clear. He create a very friendly-question asking environment. His grading system are fair. He is an instructor that proves one does not need to have a ph.D to be a great teacher and competent on one's field. I highly reccommend this teacher to all future English class takers!

Prof. Schwab is really a nice teacher. Although his classes seem to be easy for some people, for international students who cannot pass the GET, they are helpful. He always gives very valuable feedback on your essays and tells you what needs to improve. In his classes, both he and students are relaxed. His topics for assignments are much more interesting than those for GET. You can really improve your writing through his classes.

Prof. Schwab is an outstanding instructor. The class is not at all fast paced, so there is no reason for anyone to not understand what is going on. The readings are interesting overall. Before each essay is turned in, an entire class period is devoted to peer editing and suggestions. While I personally learned nothing from Prof. Schwab's grammar instruction (the things that were discussed in class were things I had covered in middle and high school English classes), I could see dramatic progress in the papers of my peers. Prof. Schwab is friendly and very approachable.

Schwab is a very relaxed teacher in that he makes you feel like you can approach him with any questions about the class. The class is lecture and also discussion-based, so he tries to get the input of all students in his class. He is a very understanding teacher, so if you can't make it for a class, tell him in advance and things will be fine. His essay grading style is great because he will always tell you what areas you need to develop on, and areas you are already good at. There aren't many exams, just a practice JEPET that isn't counted for the course grade, and some short quizes following readings. The essays are what the grades will reflect, so you will pretty much know what grade to expect from your returned essays. This is the class to take for your English 114 requirement.

Mr. Schwab was a cool guy. He's pretty laid back, but makes sure that no one falls behind. I have to say, though, he has an obsession with advertising in the media and sex. That's all we talked about for about half of the semester. Other than that, Mr. Schwab was a good teacher. The only test he gives is a practive JEPET as the final. Other than that, his essay requirements are standard. No strict rules to follow, and as long as it makes sense. Anything else?
