Not a bad experience overall, but watch your step...

The person right below me hit it on the button. She is very knowledgeable but presents hugh biases (loves ANY pre-'46 film cause its old, hates Lucas and Speilberg cause they're making films and she's teaching them). Overall I did learn quite a bit in this class and fortunately wasn't a victim of her belittling, she does do this to numerous students. Unfortunately she lets her underqualified TA's grade almost everything.

An average teacher

Scott is a film snob like many in the film department, though underneath her facade of praise "citizen kane" and hate "star wars" she truly seems to love films and her enthusiasim is definately there. Her film choices are decent, with a few exceptions. Her lectures are more based on personal opinion than anything else, but her speaking skills are relatively interesting. Unfortunately she seems to think this is high school, and consistantly embarrasses her students - pointing at them to speak in the middle of class and accusing everyone of being late (though she usually tries to start a few minutes early and run at least 15 minutes late) which is interesting because she expects us to respect her and be on time, though she does not respect us and our time and always runs the class late. Overall, she is quite annoying at times, requires a lot of writing but is an easy grader.

good class

Scott knows a lot about film history. I personally enjoyed the class. There were 3 or 4 essays 2 pages each. And a term paper that was 5-8 pages. Also, there's a midterm and final. Not that that bad. The only complaint is that for the in-class final quiz she gave us a lot of stuff to study from, but we ended up not having one! The final was a take home thing and watching a film noir and writing about it. My complaint is that Scott should show films from the 'Third World' as well, at least a 20 minute clip or something!

an alright teacher

Scott is an alright teacher. She knows film and film history well and she is an incredibly easy grader. However, she is really controlling and seems to find intimidating her students enjoyable. She hands out pages of study guides for the test and then tests you on maybe 10% of it. She threatens you over and over with attendence policies and chastises people who are even the slightest bit late. Basically its all a bluff from what I can tell. The class is good if you want a relatively easy A (you still have to do a good deal of writing) the only problem is acutally having to sit through it with her.

Two thumbs up!

Professor Scott is a MARVELOUS teacher! You could tell she is very enthusiastic and has a passion for film/cinema. I took Intro to Contemporary Cinema with her and the class itself was fun because each week, we got to view a film. Since class only met once a week (2 hrs 40 mins), the setup was as follows:

-Professor Scott would lecture for one hour straight. (Mind you, 1 whole hour may sound like forever but with Professor Scott's great lecturing skills and interesting material, time always seemed to fly by so fast!) -After lecture, we would get a quick 5 minute break. -Then, we'd watch a movie in its entirety.

The whole semester, we were assigned 3 short papers (1-2 pages each), a term paper (with a topic of your choice) and the usual midterm and final. The week before a test, Prof. Scott would give us a review sheet or 'cheat sheet' as she would call it and it would have a bunch of possible test questions. However, when it came down to the actual exam, she was really generous/lenient -- the questions she'd pick were usually quite easy and common knowledge. Anyhow, all I can really say is: Professor Scott is a really cool teacher! If you have the chance, I really suggest taking her class! :)

One of the BEST film teachers on campus

Mary Scott displays an exemplary command of the subject she teaches. She is funny and way chill. She is understanding to the college student's plight. She doesn't assign BS work and projects and you actually learn something in her class. I just took Intro to CINE (this was my first film class ever) and I feel like I have an above average grasp of the basics of film analysis. And I'm not a bookworm either. I'm a procrastinator and I'm LAZY. But Mary's class is never boring. And her T.A.'s are cool too. If you take any film class, try to get MARY SCOTT.
