What a job well done!

I took this class expecting busy work and loads of reading. Well I was right on one account. There was tons of handouts to be read and a slew of novels to rack my mind over, but the way he challenged us to read in between and inside the books made each page worthwhile. The complaints about too much reading are baseless and unfounded, at second year english, you should be expecting as much in these classes. Showing up to class is important, and the discussions made me actually want to come to class. He showed equal concern for those that wanted to learn and encouraged those that didn't. I would suggest others to take him if you want a challenge and get your hard earned tuitions worth!

A Good Teacher

Mike Thompson's class was fairly helpful. Although I went into it hoping to improve my grammar, I came out with more than I had expected. My writing was decent when I started the class but once I came out, I was greatly improved. Mike showed us how to interpret works correctly and he also pulled all the works of the semester together under a simple theme. There were no exams only about 6 essays written. You have to read two books. (1 I liked and 1 I didn't) Theres a whole slew of handouts that are basically your homework. Your just expected to read them and be able to discuss them by the next class period. Finally we watched 2 movies that we were required to write papers on. All and all I thought Mike was an excellent teacher. If your an outgoing student this is definately the type of class for you. If your not you may feel on the spot as he does call people at random. I have to admit a few times i was day dreaming in class and looked real stupid when i said "huh?"

You will look foward to going to class!

He is very challenging, but the effort you put into the class is worth it. He reads very interesting works, which makes the essays easier to write. he also has a practical and personalble teaching style. Classes are more of a dissicision-and a lot more fun this way!! I reccommend the class highly.

He's cool...

I thought that Mr.Thompsons class was fun. Even though there was a lot of handouts, and homework... he wasn't really strict about it. I was usually late for class, but I did all the homework. In the end I ended up getting an A-. The extra credits that he gave out were a major plus. It was like giving me a second chance, so I would be for sure that I was pass the class. Next semester, I'm already taking his class again. If you ask me, I would recommend taking his class. You just have to be prepare for a lot of handouts. At first its overwhelming, but you get use to it.

ignore the past commentaries from those who dropped out!

i took english 214 with professor thompson this past semester and it turned out to be the single most amazing experience i've ever experienced during the 2 years of my college life; it would be fair to add that it was prof. thompson's choice of topics and the way he chose to explore them progressively (leading the students to discover things that go deeper than just textual words, into philosophical and metaphysical issues that are important and acutally pertinent to our everyday lives) that made this class so unique and splendid. what i admire about this professor is that unlike many professrs who merely spoonfeed any answers asked by the students, he likes the students to really think for themselves and regardes his role as a teacher as someone who simply guides that process of thinking for oneself. apart from that, there are 6 out of class essays to write on 3 novels and some shorter handouts that are to be read throughout the semester. i have read what some of the previous reviewers complaining about this level of reading and i personally consider their complaints to be completely ridiculous. how can one not expect to do at least this much of reading for an ENGLISH COMPOSITION CLASS? after all, one needs to read stuff to write about stuff! anyway, he grades pretty fairly and is willing to accept re-writes. as for his personality.. he struck me as a bit peculiar and shy in his own way at first, but that's something i quickly got over, and so isn't really a hinderance to his ability as a teacher. overall, i think he is clever in chooisng what to teach to stimulate the minds of his students, and he teaches very effectively. his expectations are reasonable and he is a fairly easy person to get along with! the only minor qualm i had is that he often let the class turn into a loud chaos with 2 or 3 same voices yelling and trying to dominate the whole class discussions. so, sometimes, those who were raising their hands to speak (ie, myself) got buried and ignored. i would advise that he try harder to maintain classroom equlibrium and not let the class get so loud and hectic

He's pretty weird.

I took Mr. Thompson's class for the summer and I thought his class was kind of easy. I guess since I had his class for a semester that was short on time, he was able to throw out his loads of teaching material. I sort of got the impression that he was some kind of homosexual because of the way he talks. Anywayz, his class consisted of reading two novels, homework sections every week, and a final project. He even gave out a lot of extra credit which hardly any course you take offers, so that was good. He can have some mood swings which really annoyed me sometimes, which basically was the case when none of his students understood the material he gave us. All in all, his class was alright and I passed with flying colors, but this guy just has a weird personality which makes it hard to appreciate him.

Though teacher

I had this teacher for ENG 115, and this class was hella hard for a 1 unit class. He gave homework everyday, and there was a total of 2 essays. We read from handouts and 1 novel. Everday the class will have discussions instead indivial work. He'll issue extra credit for who ever wants to do it. Participation is require for this class. First I thought I was going to recieve a C, but i was surprised i was getting an A-. I wouldn't take take this class unless it was the only section left open.

ATTN: KEEP AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!!!

This teacher is harsh, and just plain evil. he likes ass-kissers, and if your not one of them, then believe me you will be sorry. He is pretty much rude and makes you feel like your nothing to him.
