Better learn to study on your own!

Prof. Tom is a likeable guy but the way he teaches can irritate you. His lectures (which were almost all straight outta the book) are kinda boring and after you attend regularly, you feel like you're wasting your time there. His lectures are supplemented by a projector that nobody besides the people in the front rows can see because it's so small. That irritated me the most. Also, he'll give you a week to finish his HW handouts but won't finish teaching the chapter until the day the HW for that chapter is due. That made no sense to me at all. Third, he sometimes expects you to memorize homework problems to do well on the test. The reason for this is cus his tests push the 50 min allotted time for the tests but he always says you can finish it in 30 min. BTW, his tests are so hard that he always has to give the entire class extra points on the tests to bring our grades up. At least 15 pts each for a 110 pt test!!! He doesn't gaurantee giving you extra points tho. (4 non-cumulative tests)

Other than those 3 things he's not a bad guy. He'll help you out on problems if you make time to ask him. He also gives you interesting articles to read. Nobody says Accounting is easy. Just do all the HW and keep up.

Horrible!

This was one of the worst class experences I have ever had. The homework has nothing to do with the test. Every test had at least 2 mistakes with either wording or improper grading, I took credit/no credit and he said i failed my final which i am sure i did not as i studied and thought i did well, and he made so many mistakes on the other classes, I am currently in the process of contesting the grade through the university, espceially since he was almost impossible to get a hold of and he says he cannot find my final test any more. BEWARE OF THIS TEACHER

A horrible teacher.

Professor Tom is a very hard teacher. He treats you like you should know or have memorized the materials already from the first day of class. He doesn't bother to explain the material very clearly either you learn it by yourself or you don't learn it at all. In my class many people were getting F's and D's but he obviously did not think something was wrong with his teaching something was wrong with us. But for more than half the class to flunk an exam something must be wrong. I did get a C in the class but that was all my hard work I had to teach myself the materials.

Take Duke or Jerris

This class was extremely boring. Unless your an acounting major no matter what teacher you have this class can be a drag. I STRONGLY suggest you take someone other than Prof. Tom because his class SUCKS. The homework isnt that hard because its straight out of the book but his exams are hard! All he does is go over slides and he talks so softly your mind can easily wander. Just to put stuff in perspective for you 40 people out of about 90 people in the class just failed them last exam. His lectures are boring and as many as 15 people will just walk out every class while hes talking.

This Teacher will Make you Suffer from Information Overload!

I took Tom's Financial Accounting course in the Spring 2002 semester. He's a nice enough guy, but he leaves a lot to be desired as an instructor. His lectures don't offer much more than you can glean from the text. His homework assignments are hard because they're due before he reviews the material in class. He even lost one of my homework assignments, which I needed to review for the exam -- fortunately, I had saved an electronic copy. His exams are very hard! He expects you to know the material (usually 3 chapters) inside & out. His test questions are NOT straight forward and he frequently adds a twist to make them even harder, considering this is an introductory course. By the time you take the exam, you've already completed homework for another chapter you will be tested on in the future. Then, he spends another hour before the exam, presenting even more new material. I made a special request that he present new material after the exam, but he seemed incapable of deviating from his own agenda, much less able to explain why.

Sure Why Not

Frank Tom has alot of experience with accounting. The only thing that threw me off in the class was the homework. He assigns homework usually on the second day of classes(usually Wed in a M/W class or Thur in a T/Th schedule) and asks you to hand it in on the following Monday or Tuesday. This really gives you no time to review in class before you have to turn it in. And I also found that the homework was alot easier than on the test. What I mean was that you can understand the homework, but when it comes to the test, you could be way off.

Alright accounting teacher

Frank Tom is an alright teacher he seems to have a lot of experience in Accounting when he worked in the private sector according to him. His teacher method is different because he reads straight out of the book. If you bring your book to class you can just follow along with him. He reads it outloud word for word. The only problem I had was with his homework assignment. The class meets every Monday and Wednesday only. He assigns homework on the new chapter for the weekend without going over it in class. What happens if you don't understand something in the chapter then its really difficult for you to do your homework. He collects it in the beginning of class on Monday then he goes over the new chapter. His tests are T/F and problem solving. If you take his class make sure you find a study partner so you can help each other out. I not giving this review out of spite because I'm getting a B in his class thats only because I joined a study group.
