Brilliant intellectual, Kind person

Professor Tsygankov is by far the best professor I've had at State, and I've been here 4 years. He is incredibly intelligent and makes lectures interesting and thought-provoking. Not only does he encourage discussion, he encourages THINKING. He is also very organized and helpful...if you have a question, comment, or anything, he is more than willing to listen or help out. His choice of reading material is very interesting and he also encourages students to keep up with events and to seek various sources of information. You will get a lot out of his class: deeper understanding of the subject, the ability to really think about and analyze information, better research skills, etc.. it's all about what you put into it. You have to put in a lot of effort to really get something out of the class, but it's all worth it. I am so glad I decided to take a class (IR/PLSI 328..Post-Soviet States) with him. He is, without a doubt, the best professor and intellectual I have met.

Very narrow focus, but not very in depth

he is a smart man, but the focus of the class was very limited. only a few aspects of post soviet states were examined, and these aspects were all explained by the same few reasons. a very repetitive class. I learned far more doing the research paper on my own than I did from a semester of lectures.

A stunning intellectual

The best and the most brilliant professor I have ever taken a class with. However, to appreciate the depth of his knowledge, one must have a sophisticated mind. He is strict but fare, and his projects are always a challenging and rewarding experience. He is readily available if you have any questions, and he will be more than willing to provide you with plethora of information if you are stuck with your research. I have taken three classes with him, and the experience is only getting better. He is an amazing intellectual, and I would recommend him to anyone thinking about taking his class.

Dedicated and inspiring

Prof. Tsygankov is a great guy. A review of his resume will give you an idea of how brilliant he is. Taking a class from him is a rare opportunity to work with distinguished and gifted scholar. He is a caring and dedicated teacher besides -- helpful, patient and supportive, gracious, gallant and kind. It's true that his personal style is understated and reserved, but if a more flamboyant style appeals to you, there are classes available in the theater department.

Tsygankov expects self-discipline from his students, but his expectations are clearly outlined, reasonable and fair. He devotes class time to teaching IR rather than expounding his personal views. He is generous with his time, encouragement and support. He is interested in what students think and seems to genuinely enjoy teaching. A discussion with him never fails to be wise, entertaining and intellectually stimulating.

Prof Tsygankov is one of the best instructors at SF State. He is the kind of teacher who changes your life forever.

If you like ROBOTS, take this guy!

This guy is a machine. A robot I tell you with no life in him. He is so monotonish that after two minutes you can't even pay attention anymore. He stands completely still, no waving of his arms, and talk gibberish for two hours. He preaches about truth and evidence and objectivity, but hypocritically doesn't follow any of his advice.
