Sheila's Cross-Cultural Sex and Gender was one of the best classes I've taken. If you plan to slack off and cruise, this is not the class for you. Sheila expects a lot from her students even though there are only 2 written exams -- you will have to read (or at least read enough to know what to write about), attend class, and listen to or participate in weekly discussions. At first, I was intimidated by her, but later found that she knew what she was talking about and what she expected from her students. Sheila is not exactly warm and friendly, but she is nice, fair, and respects her students (and asks for it in return). There are no direct, clear answer to the assignments, so she makes you think for yourself. In both exams, you have to write more than what is lectured and go beyond the surface. Aside from the two written exams (the midterm is take-home, the final is in-class), you will have short papers that are fun to do. I suggest citing from a variety of sources because she wants you to prove you did read. Do not skip out on videos because they are interesting and even if you have seen them, she asks you look at them a different way (usually, you have to write a short response in class after). There is a lot of reading assigned and some are very dense; I passed the class by reading enough to get by and took good notes to understand what some readings were about. Her assignments are broad for a reason, allowing us to approach it in whatever way we want based on the readings. Sheila's class was hard work, but worth it. You'll come away looking at sex and gender in a whole new perspective; your ideologies and beliefs will be stimulated and challenged. Isn't that what college is all about?

I took this class as a GE requirement and got a lot more than a mere overview. Shiela is one of the best professors that I have had at SFSU. The class was challenging (to say the least), but I learned an invaluable amount of information. Take this class if you like to think...don't take this class if you want an easy "A". Shiela expects a lot, but she is also very supportive and wants her students to learn. Highly recommended.

Great teacher with a vast knowledge in anthropology and womens studies. I am a republican who dreaded attended a left wing liberal feminist class with a bunch of womens studies students, but after a couple classes I realized that Sheila was not concerned with your political views, but with the support and evidence you had to back up your opinions. I will admit that I did not do any of the assigned readings, but I did attend almost every class (attendance is graded) and still managed to pull an A. Just follow her guidelines on the homework and you should do fine. She really is an amazing teacher and would take her agin if she taught in the college of business.
