Best Speech Class!!

Tuman is a great teacher who really encourages you & gives great feedback to help you in the future. He also gives feedback on how you have improved & doesn't put you down, but says it in a really helpful way. This class is really fun & the whole class gets to know each other really well through his speeches. He says he treats it as an advanced speech class, but his speeches are actually pretty fun. Introduction speech, hero speech, demonstration, pandhandling speech (isn't as hard as you think - 30 seconds long), sales speech, campaign speech (you write it for another student - sounds harder than it really is) & impromptu speech. There's no tests at all, but he takes roll almost every day. He's a great teacher & you'll look foward to going to his class everyday!

The only downside: He doesn't tell you your grade on your speeches ever. You don't really know how you're doing in his class gradewise through the whole semester. But his feedback kinda tells you how you did on your speech.

Annoying Teaching Assistant

First of all I would like to say that Prof. Tuman is an excellent teacher and I really liked the class. HOWEVER his Teaching Assistant, Paige Boger has been totally rude to me. She is difficult to talk to on the phone and is not very patient when it comes to discussing details or questions regarding projects. She often acts as a middleman if ever I needed to talk or email Tuman directly. Fortunately though I didn't let her get to me.

Great Speech Comm teacher

I had a good time in Professor Tuman's class. He has been through law school and is very deep on First Amendment issues. I especially recommend that you take this course if you are planning to go to law school, because it is taught like a law class. It was very educational. The exams are a little scary, but the textbook- which Tuman wrote himself- helps a great deal. You will learn a lot if you take this class. Professor Tuman is also a very kind person, and it was a pleasure getting to know him.

Super-intelligent, genuinely nice man

Joe is an extremely intelligent professor along with being approachable and interesting. His lecturing style is unique in that he is less concerned with the time limitations of the class and more focused on giving you the most thorough background information possible. The other review is true, you may think he is straying off the subject, but he eventually gets around back to it and when he gets there, you feel so much more knowledgeable on the topic. He is often on the evening news as a political commentator, and I always got a kick out of seeing one of my professors on tv. Be prepared to take lots of notes, and to study for this course. But if you are like most of his students, you will become interested in what he teaching.

Think like a boy scout.

Imagine if you will, a world where case law is interesting and useful in everyday life. Suppose you get arrested for burning the flag or when protesting the "W" machine, you would need this class to know and understand your rights. Joe's presentation is excellent. He is engaging and a spectacular speaker. Here are some tips for survival: be prepared [although there are times it seems that he is not sticking to the sillybus(ha ha), he is getting there and it is best to be prepared than have you try to fool him], when taking the test make sure you read every question very carefully [Joe throws a lot of curve balls, be ready for them]and as always participate [I found that it made a impact on my final grade]. Although this class is dificult, it is worth the work. Good luck!
